2019 SEASONJUNE 22-AUGUST 3

DEAR FRIENDS,It has been my hope since the Festival was founded in 1993 to present West Side Story, one of the five mega-masterpieces of the American Lyric Stage, in the way it was envisioned by Leonard Bernstein. He imagined it with a philharmonic sound in the pit and the finest dancers, actors and musicians—the culmination of the best of everything in the art form of American Musical Theatre.
Have you ever witnessed live, on stage, West Side Story given the kind of respect with which Lenny aspired? Unless you had the good
fortune to visit the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City between September 26, 1957, and June 27, 1959, it is very unlikely. Until now.
Here’s another question: How do you justify hiring 30 world-class dancers and 60 instrumentalists for just one of six shows performed in repertory? You can’t. You “imaginate” about how to use these amazing performers to their full extent without killing them off. So we looked to Walt Disney. What is his all-time favorite musical? Mary Poppins. What Disney film was made into a Broadway musical that took the world by storm in 2011? Newsies!
Our glorious orchestra will bring to life the genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You loved The Barber of Seville last summer. Now see the sequel and find out what became of Figaro, Count Almaviva and his Rosina in The Marriage of Figaro.
How about having an intimate conversation with the greatest diva and divo of all time in the comfort and splendor of the Utah Theatre? Become a fly on the wall during the last appearances of Maria Callas and Enrico Caruso, the first rock-star celebrities of the operatic world. Turn back the clock and be part of Maria Callas’s Master Class at the Juilliard School in March 1972.
Drop in for Enrico Caruso’s last performance at the Metropolitan Opera and in life where the adoring but frightened audience shouted Bravo, Caruso!
There has never been a season like this— let’s triumph with some toe-tapping terpsichore!
