Orlando’s Vrbo Citrus Bowl matchup between Alabama and Michigan led to a significant audience on ABC. Even without national championship ramifications, 14.3 million viewers tuned in on New Year’s Day to see the game between the two well-known programs in just the fifth game played between the two teams. The number of viewers topped every ABC bowl game since the 2010 National Championship between Alabama and Texas. Those eight bowl games account for 322 College Football Bowl Games played in Florida since 1935, when the Orange Bowl debuted in Miami. Teams in the community Players and coaches from the Auburn Tigers and Minnesota Golden Gophers football teams helped bring some holiday cheer to patients at Tampa General Hospital. Team members and coaches took a break from Outback Bowl practice and activities to spend time lifting spirits and talking sports.

Players went room-to-room distributing posters, pennants, t-shirts s and signing autographs. Representing Auburn were Coach Gus Malzahn & Kristi Malzahn, Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown, Eli Stove, Daniel Thomas, Jeremiah Dinson, Noah Igbinoghene K.J. Britt, Bo Nix, Kam Martin, Arryn Siposs, Mike Horton and Marquel Harrell. Minnesota representatives included Coach P.J.Fleck, Heather Fleck, Tanner Morgan, Casey O'Brien, Thomas Barber, Mohamed Ibrahim, Seth Green and Winston DeLattiboudere.

A longstanding tradition before each of Florida Citrus Sports’ bowl games, “Day for Kids,” partners local children with players from both schools for a few hours of fun and games with the ‘big kids’ who comprise each team’s roster. The 2019 event took place at Fun Spot America, and the majority of the 200 kids in attendance live in the West Lakes communities surrounding Camping World Stadium.

“This is a super special event every year, and the players always prove themselves to be gallant gentlemen with these families,” said Eddy Moratin, the executive director for the non-profit Lift Orlando, an organization founded to benefit the West Lakes after Camping World Stadium’s $200 million facelift in 2014. “The way they treat the kids, it’s just inspiring for the whole family to watch these young men, who are being shaped by sports and competition into role models for the community.”

To receive an invite to the event, participating kids had to meet certain benchmarks in school. Through its MVP Families program, Florida Citrus Sports also offers game tickets to qualifying kids and their families in exchange for in-classroom accomplishments. During the festivities, the various player-kid trios hurried through the park to get lined up for rides, including Tua Tagovailoa. Despite suffering a season-ending hip injury that required surgery, the Alabama quarterback made sure to enjoy the one ride he could: the merry-go-round. Clutching his crutch, Tagovailoa climbed aboard the carousel with a wide grin saying, “I’m on a ride, baby!”

Next on the Florida Football Central Calendar is the 95th Annual East-West Shrine Bowl, to be played Saturday, January 18 at Tropicana Field, in St. Petersburg, with approximately 100 players selected for the game, regardless of the location of their school. Players must be college seniors and currently eligible to play for their school. All Divisions are considered for the opportunity play in front of representatives of NFL teams.

Besides the on-field opportunity for college players, the East-West Shrine Bowl benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children and its mission to provide advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate, regardless of the families’ ability to pay for services. Players and coaches visit a local Shriners Hospitals for Children during game week to meet the patients and gain a greater understanding of the importance of the game. Florida Football Central, now in its 8th season of informing football fans in Florida is compiled by Nick Gandy. Thanks for reading #floridafootballcentral.
