APPLES: All apple trees require a second variety for
pollination, but any apple or crabapple blooming at the same
time, within a quarter mile, will probably do.
A: the variety is on standard rootstock
Rootstock determines the size, longevity, hardiness and growth
habits of a tree. Most of the apples offered are on standard (full-
sized) Antonovka rootstock
B: the variety is on B118 rootstock
Semi-dwarfing rootstock that produces a tree that is about 85-
90% of a standard size.
C: the variety is on M111 rootstock
Semi-dwarfing rootstock that produces a tree that is about 65-
80% of a standard size
E: the variety is on V1 rootstock
Dwarfing rootstock that produces a small dwarf tree about 55%
the size of a standard tree
Planting distance:
Plant standard trees (A) 25-30' apart.
Plant Bud 118 (B) rootstocks 20-25' apart.
Plant M111 (C) rootstocks 15-20' apart.
Plant V1 (E) rootstocks 5-10' apart.
PEARS: Although some pears appear to be self-pollinating, we
recommend a second variety for pollination.
Pear blossoms are less attractive to bees than apple blossoms, so pears
should be planted closer together than apples to ensure pollination,
about 15–20' apart.
PEACHES: Peach trees are self-pollinating — a second
variety is not needed for pollination
Plant 15–20' apart.

PLUMS: Hybrid plums (American Plum Seedling) require a
second variety for pollination. Plant a cluster of trees close
enough together (3–6') for the branches to mingle.
European plums (Stanley) are self-pollinating—planting two
different varieties will improve pollination.
RASPBERRIES: Raspberries are self-pollinating — a
second variety is not needed for pollination.
Everbearing Raspberries (August Red & Polana) bear on first-
year canes
Summer-bearing Raspberries (Boyne & Latham) bear on sec-
ond-year canes
BLUEBERRIES: Lowbush blueberries are generally self-
pollinating—other blueberries nearby will help ensure pollination.
Plant 12" apart each way and cultivate as a ground cover.
Highbush blueberries require two varieties, three or more rec-
ommended, for pollination. Space them 3–6' apart (3' for the short-
er varieties) in rows 8–10' apart.
CHERRIES: Sweet cherries mostly grow into very large trees
and should be planted 15-20’ apart. Pollination requirements are specific
to each plant.
Pie Cherries are self pollinating and are significantly hardier than
sweet cherries but can be frustrating to grow. Although the trees are
fully hardy in Zone 3, flower buds may be damaged in colder winters.
Plant 15-20’ apart.
