If you have been by Overlake in the last year, you’ve seen us growing before your eyes. The new building on the corner of NE 110th St and 116th Ave NE will be a state-of-the-art facility housing our beautiful new Childbirth Center and two floors of patient rooms that will both increase the comfort of our patients and families and leverage the latest technologies in patient care. The new building is part of Project FutureCare, a $250 million project aimed at modernizing our campus in preparation for the next 60 years of service. Your donations play a vital role in this transformation, and you’ve already contributed over $32 million of our $50 million goal.

Harder to see from the road but no less important are Project FutureCare’s two new cardiovascular operating rooms. These facilities, which opened in the fall of 2019, have been optimized for the high-tech, minimally invasive procedures of the present and future as well as the gold-standard open-heart surgeries. The addition of the new operating rooms, now called the Bob and Patty Edwards Cardiac Operating Suite, greatly increases our capacity to care for the hearts of the Eastside. Still to come: an upgraded inpatient mental health unit, the demolition of the old East Tower, and a new front entrance that welcomes visitors and connects our campus together.

OBaby Digital AppOur new Childbirth Center is still under construction, but innovative work with Eastside moms and babies happens continuously. In 2019, we launched a new app, OBaby, which puts trustworthy information at the fingertips of our expectant moms. App users can keep track of milestones, learn about pregnancy symptoms and keep a log of their baby’s movement. After the birth, moms can use the app to track growth, feeding, diapers and vaccinations.

Feel the BeatAtrial fibrillation and other irregular heart rhythms are dangerous conditions that may lead to strokes and other life-threatening medical events. Many arrhythmias can be treated with minimally invasive procedures in which a doctor who specializes in electrophysiology threads a catheter into the heart and applies heat or cold. In collaboration with our partners at EvergreenHealth, Overlake’s electrophysiology program has expanded the number of procedures we offer and doubled the patients we serve—from 600 to more than 900 per year.

Honoring ChoicesWho will make healthcare decisions for you if you can’t? That is the central question underlying advance care planning, a process that ensures your wishes will be known and respected should you become incapacitated and unable to direct your own care. Overlake encourages all adults, age 18 and over, to think through the kind of care they would want if an accident or a serious illness left them unable to communicate.

In 2019, Overlake began offering advance care planning services through individual meetings and group classes and workshops. Participants have the peace of mind of knowing that they will receive the care they need and want, should the time come.

Advanced Stroke Center CertificationStrokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. If you have a stroke, it is critically important to receive expert care as soon as possible to survive and minimize the damage. In 2019, Overlake earned certification as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. During a stroke, a patient loses 1.9 million brain cells per minute, meaning that timely treatment results in better patient outcomes. In a thrombectomy, an endovascular surgeon physically removes the blood clot causing the stroke, which restores blood flow to the brain. This advanced technique allows a significantly higher rate of recovery than other treatments.
