SEMINAR AGENDA

Page 3: 2019 MAY SEMINAR...Chris O’Brien has been a successful trial lawyer for over 25 years. He has represented thousands of people hurt in car crashes, sexual assaults, slip and fall

Chris O’Brien has been a successful trial lawyer for over 25 years. He has represented thousands of people hurt in car crashes, sexual assaults, slip and fall incidents and dog bite attacks. For every client, he gives them the personal attention that they deserve. Chris believes that every client has a

right to understand what is going on in their case at all times; that’s why he gives every client his personal cell phone and often takes calls at night. Chris limits the number of cases handled by each lawyer at the firm to ensure that clients’ calls are returned promptly and to move cases to completion properly.

Besides practicing law, Chris has been a trial technique instructor since the early 1990’s. He knows that teaching law students and other lawyers requires him to stay current on the latest thinking and tactics involved in trial practice. Chris has taught at more than thirty seminars in eighteen states and two countries, from Massachusetts to Georgia to California to Puerto Rico. He is a member of the National College of Advocacy, is Co-Director of Trial Advocacy at the University at Buffalo School of Law, and is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He has been named a New York State SuperLawyer for the last seven years and is regularly recognized by Business First as one of the top trial lawyers in Western New York.

In the past fifteen years, Chris has had more than ten verdicts or settlements in excess of one million dollars. Through his national network of trial lawyers and trial consultants who teach at seminars, Chris has access to a wide of variety of experts and demonstrative evidence creators, who help him prepare the best presentation possible of cases for trial. Though less than 2% of his cases go to trial, Chris knows that preparation is the key to success.

Chris lives in Amherst, New York with his two younger children as the two older children have gone to college and beyond. He spends his spare time reading trial technique books and thinking of new ways to teach trial advocacy to lawyers and law students.

Josh Conaway was born in Plainview, Texas, but grew up in Farmington, New Mexico. His family ran an oil and gas business, where Josh became very familiar with the oil and gas industry. After graduating from high school, he went to college at the University of New Mexico but spent a summer working for

an oilfield service company.

Josh attended law school at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. After graduating with honors from Gonzaga, he worked at a large civil defense firm in Albuquerque, New Mexico where he litigated cases involving oilfield injuries, refinery explosions, medical malpractice claims, and trucking accidents. As a result of Josh’s hard work and excellence in litigation, he was made a partner in 2009.

He joined Fadduol, Cluff, Hardy & Conaway, P.C., to further his goal to help people injured and killed as a result of corporate misconduct. After continuing his excellence in vigorous litigation on behalf of victims, he was made partner in the firm. Josh continues pursuing justice for injured persons and families who have lost loved ones because of corporate greed and indifference to safety.

Josh has been married to his wife, Janae, for 21 years. He enjoys spending his free time with Janae and his three children, Parker, Aleigha, and Madeline.

robert vogelSCHOLARSHIP

Robert Vogel, the attorney for whom this scholarship is named, played a pivotal role in North Dakota legal history. His career was a mix of private practice, government service and academia spanning more than 60 years. He was a United States Attorney, a Justice of the Supreme Court and a Professor at UND Law School. But his heart always belonged to private practice at the trial and appellate levels.

In his law practice, he most enjoyed representing the underdog and the underprivileged, not the privileged and powerful; a preference that originated in his upbringing in the North Dakota Nonpartisan League. He was noted for being a clear thinker and a persuasive writer in private practice and on the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Gerald Vande Walle described him in a funeral elegy as “one of the best, if not the best, writer the court has ever had.”

After five years on the Supreme Court, he left the court to become a law professor at UND Law School, where he taught trial and appellate advocacy to many students, quite a few of whom are now members of the Association for Justice. Even as a law professor, he could not resist the practice of law, and started the Robert Vogel Law Firm, from which he eventually retired to focus on writing

an accurate history of the infamous Langer trials of the 1930s. This history was published in 2004 as Unequal Contest: Bill Langer and His Political Enemies.

After his death in early 2005, the Robert Vogel Scholarship was established to assist a second year UND law student who intends to use his or her legal skills to make the world a better place, promote civil liberties and preserve the right to a trial by jury.

ROBERT VOGEL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERCassandra Frederickson grew up in Manitoba, Canada and is currently a rising 3L at the University of North Dakota School of Law. She is presently amongst the top students in her class and enjoys researching and writing on human rights issues. She is also looking forward to taking on the roles of Research Editor for the North Dakota Law Review and President of the International Human Rights Organization next year.

Cassandra discovered her passion for human rights while volunteering in India which motivated her to pursue an undergraduate in Human Rights and Global Studies at the University of Winnipeg where she was the recipient of the Gold Medal Achievement Award for her major. Before attending law school, she had the opportunity to research development programs in Mozambique, Africa, and volunteered at the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties. Wherever her legal career takes her, Cassandra hopes to positively impact the world around her.
