2019 Guest Preachers The Chapel of St. James the Fisherman has had a long-standing tradition of outstanding preaching. Every summer since its inception, the Chapel has welcomed a combination of resident and visiting clergy to the pulpit. Our priest-in-charge, The Very Rev. Tracey Lind, will preach on June 30, July 7, July 28 (The Feast of St. James), August 11, and September 1. Our guest preachers will include a number of younger voices from around the Episcopal Church, as well as some well-seasoned friends and members of the chapel. The preachers are listed in alphabetical order. The Rev. Joy Caires – August 18

The Reverend Joy Caires is Rector of St. Clement’s Memorial Episcopal Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Joy was born and raised on the island of Maui and has lived on "the mainland" since 1996. A graduate of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., and sponsored for ordination by Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, Joy has served in calls as a pediatric chaplain, assistant priest, and in a variety of supply and extended supply settings. In 2015, Joy was called to serve as Rector of St. Clement's. Joy and her wife, Lona, have two little boys and call Northeast Minneapolis home.

The Rev. Arrington Chambliss – August 4

Arrington is the Executive Director of the Episcopal City Mission, a faith-based organization that builds relationships and collective power across Massachusetts for racial and economic justice as the expression of God’s transforming love. Prior to this call, she was the co-founder and former Executive Director of Life Together. Ordained as a priest in 2004, she served five years as Assistant/Associate Rector with the Church of St. Andrew in Marblehead, MA. Prior to ordination, she founded No Ordinary Time, an organization that worked primarily with young activists, artists, and faith-based leaders to integrate faith, spirituality, and reflective practice into their social justice work. Arrington is particularly interested in the intersection between the inner work of contemplative prayer, reflection, and healing and the outer work of nonviolent action, reconciliatory dialogue, and community organizing to bring about social change and, with God's help, to grow the kingdom of God on earth.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Arrington holds a master's degree from Harvard Divinity School. She lives in Jamaica Plain with her partner and seven-year old daughter.

Mr. Christopher Decatur – August 25

Christopher Decatur is a rising senior at Virginia Theological Seminary and a postulant for holy orders in the Diocese of Ohio. He is currently serving at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. Prior to seminary, Chris served at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, OH as the Associate Minister for Children, Youth, Family, Young Adult, and Campus Ministries. He is also the former Chair of Racial Reconciliation and Justice on the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music of the Episcopal Church. Chris currently serves on the Task Force on Liturgical and Prayer Book Revision, and is a writer for Grow Christians, an online ministry of Forward Movement that supports practicing faith at home. At Virginia Theological Seminary, Chris is a Catechist for the discipleship Initiative “Baptized For Life.” In 2019, Chris was nominated to be a part of the Preaching Excellence Program in The Episcopal Church. Chris comes from an undergraduate degree in Comparative Religion from Cleveland State University and years of studies and practicing of Early Childhood Education at both CSU and as a student at the Catholic University of America.

The Rev. Ryan Fleenor – June 23

Ryan serves as Vicar of St. James’ Episcopal Church in New York City. Raised in Durham, North Carolina, Ryan graduated from the University of Virginia and Yale Divinity School. He has served congregations in New York, Connecticut, Virginia and North Carolina. Ryan’s husband, Dan Noble, is an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. They have lived in Brooklyn Heights since 2011. The Rev. Dr. Milton “Mac” Gatch – June 2 and September 8

Before his retirement, Milton McC. Gatch, universally known as Mac, served as Dean, Provost, and Burke Library Director of Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He served for 40 years as priest-in-charge of the Chapel and is author of several books, including his most recent, Till the Break of Day, a family history.

Ms. Ingrid Jacobson – June 16

Ingrid Jacobson is a second year student in the Master of Theological Studies program at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, CA. A “cradle” Episcopalian, Ingrid grew up in a clergy family. After graduating from Harvard College, Ingrid worked in advertising in New York until the late ‘80s when she moved to London, where she then lived for more than 25 years. While living in London, she earned an MS in Social Policy from the London School of Economics, and worked as a management consultant to a variety of non-profit organizations. In 2014, Ingrid moved to San Francisco where she lives with her husband, Cabot Brown (with whom she was joined in Holy Matrimony at the Chapel of St. James the Fisherman in 2013). Ingrid & Cabot have been members of the Chapel ever since, as well as of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Francisco, where Ingrid is now in an official discernment process and where she serves regularly as a preacher, lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Christian educator. Ingrid and her father Steve, a retired Episcopal priest and long-time member of the Chapel, will lead worship together. Steve will preside and Ingrid will preach.

The Rev. Adam Spencer – July 14

Adam is the Associate Priest for Pastoral Care, St. Thomas Church in New York City. He graduated from Baldwin Wallace University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies. He formally began discernment of a vocation to the priesthood while serving as the Youth and Adult Education Coordinator and Dean's Assistant at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland, Ohio, from 2008 to 2012. He received his Master of Divinity degree at the University of Chicago Divinity School in 2016, and was ordained in 2018. Before coming to St. Thomas, Adam worked as Manager of Volunteer Services at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago, and served as a priest associate at the Church of the Atonement in Chicago. Married to Rose, they enjoy travelling, hiking, and going to the movies and the theater together.

The Rev. Naomi Tutu – July 21

Naomi serves as Missioner for Racial and Economic Equity at the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, North Carolina. She was born in South Africa and was educated in Swaziland, the US and England.. Growing up the “daughter of …” has offered Naomi Tutu many opportunities and challenges in her life. Perhaps one of the greatest challenges she has struggled with is the call to ministry. From early in her life she would say, “I have my father’s nose, I do not want his job!” Yet this call refused to be silenced. Even as she carried her passion for justice into other fields, the call to preach and serve as an ordained clergyperson continued to tug at her. Finally, in her 50’s she responded to the call and went to seminary. Her professional experience ranges from being a development consultant in West Africa, to being program coordinator for programs on Race and Gender and Gender-based Violence in Education at the African Gender Institute at the University of Cape Town. In addition, Ms. Tutu has taught at the University of Hartford, University of Connecticut, and Brevard College in North Carolina. She served as Program Coordinator for the historic Race Relations Institute at Fisk University. Naomi is the single mother of two daughters and a son.

The Rev. Janet Vincent – September 22 and 29

The Rev. Janet Vincent, a priest for 32 years has led parishes in New York and Washington, D.C. She served on the staff of the Center for Christian Spirituality at the General Theological Seminary and as a faculty member for CREDO, a Church Pension Fund initiative for clergy wellness. The PBS NewsHour profiled her ministry at Ground Zero and she has appeared as a panelist on the broadcast. Now semi-retired, she serves as a part-time associate priest at Christ the King Episcopal Church in Stone Ridge, New York, and enjoys tending her Hudson Valley “ranch” and more time for her first professional passion – photography. The Rev. Joseph Zorawick – June 9

Prior to retirement in 1996, Joe served as Rector of Christ and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in New York City. He then joined Church of the Epiphany where he serves as Priest Associate. Joe and his wife Lois are summer residents, and Joe served as one of the Chapel’s Priests-in-Charge for many years.
