The Ngarara Willim Centre, which provides support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff, encouraged Ti’a Pynor-Greedy to make the most of her studies and draw inspiration from RMIT’s learning environment and strong links to the justice sector to get one step closer to her dream of joining the Australian Federal Police.

“The university has a genuine interest in students’ potential and their academic abilities,” Ti’a said.

New Academic StreetRMIT’s New Academic Street (NAS) project has transformed the heart of the Melbourne City campus, creating new facilities and mixed-use spaces to improve the student experience.

The NAS project team partnered with RMIT Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging students to capture the development of these amazing new learning and social environments.

More than 80 students brought a unique perspective to photographing the transformation of their own campus. Their images have featured in the Open House Melbourne program, The Age newspaper, RMIT’s social media channels and in publications such as this Degree and Diploma Guide.

Heartbeat of the city

Situated on Swanston Street, the City campus has been an iconic part of the Melbourne CBD for more than 130 years. The campus is surrounded by cafes, galleries, theatres, restaurants and parks, and is easily accessed by public transport. Melbourne Central railway station is convenient to most campus buildings, while several north-south Yarra trams run up and down Swanston Street.

Brunswick

Creative community

Brunswick is where multicultural Melbourne meets its creative soul. The campus is home to around 2500 students and to many of RMIT’s design-related programs, including fashion and textile technologies. Getting to and from the campus is easy. Jewell railway station, on the Upfield line, is a short walk away and the number 19 tram runs from Elizabeth Street in the city to the campus.

Bundoora

The great outdoors

Situated in the northern Melbourne suburb of Bundoora, this campus is home to many of RMIT’s education, health and biomedical science programs. The campus features state-of-the-art learning and sporting facilities, and is surrounded by native bushland and parks. There is plenty of parking on and around campus, and it is well serviced by tram and bus routes.

— ArchitectureUrban design innovators leading the way in Australia and overseas.

RMIT’s programs are highly regarded by the international design community for their approach to innovation and design exploration. Design is at the core of your studies and will combine experimental and speculative design with real-life, industry-linked projects that will help you to develop an original approach to your practice.

From your first semester you will be hands-on in design studios developing drawing, 2D and 3D design skills, learning in an environment that models the best practice of industry and innovative design firms. You’ll learn from international and local academics and teachers who are connected with industry and many of whom are award-winning architects and designers.

You’ll study in Melbourne, the design capital of Australia, in award-winning and state-of-the-art facilities. The city campus provides you with a dynamic urban laboratory for the exploration of ideas and design.

Students engage with remote regional community

As part of a unique design studio, students from Landscape Architecture and Architecture engaged in a two-week field trip through western New South Wales.

They worked with the Wilcannia community and the Barkandji people in the development of a new cultural centre for the region.

“The trip was an incredible experience. I felt so welcome and involved in the community of Wilcannia and the Barkandji people’s culture,” said Maddi Collins, a Landscape Architecture student.

“I never expected such openness towards us as strangers in the town. It was also an amazing opportunity to visit the breathtaking landscapes of Mutawintji National Park.”

RMIT offers a hub for emerging artists and practitioners to explore ideas through making and gain exposure through local and international exhibitions.

“The MPAV is fully autonomous and doesn’t require a driver to operate the vehicle. The interior configuration can be easily adjusted to carry a maximum of 10 persons,” Mohammed said.

WHY STUDY DESIGN AT RMIT?

Supinthorn Saengsukyen and Natalie Viola were two of the seven RMIT graduates who won big at the 2017 Design Institute of Australia’s Victoria and Tasmania Graduate of the Year Awards.

They share some advice on how to flourish as a designer when you’re still stuck in the classroom.

1. Stay up-to-date with design trends

Ever-changing design trends mean that those who can keep up with the latest styles will be one step ahead of their competitors, and Supinthorn advises translating that advantage into action.

“Know the market and start to forecast what will happen in the future,” Supinthorn said.

“As designers, we should be up-to-date on all new trends and new knowledge at all times.”

2. Question the world around you

Designers shouldn’t limit themselves to creative industries when they look for inspiration either, Natalie said.

“Whether it’s delving into history or keeping in step with modern technology, any information – no matter how small – can be used as inspiration,” she said.

Natalie was also thankful for the guidance of RMIT’s experienced teachers and industry mentors, who helped her pursuit of knowledge and paved an “excellent start to her interior design career”.

Flight Training at Point Cook

RMIT’s Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilots) is run from world-class flight training facilities and environment at Point Cook. Point Cook was the world’s first military air base and is home to the Royal Australian Air Force Museum.

RMIT is the only operator at Point Cook, which minimises circuit congestion and delays and enables more take-offs and landings per hour than many other airfields, improving training efficiency.

The Point Cook Airfield is ideally situated with access to all types of airspace environments and variable weather conditions created by mountains, sea and city. This enables trainees to develop the confidence and capability to handle aircraft command under a variety of conditions.

RMIT racing teams

The Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE) organises a university competition known as Formula SAE (or FSAE). The objective is for university teams to design, build and compete in an open wheel race car. It is the largest engineering competition in the world, with more than 500 teams and events on every continent

RMIT has two teams that take part in FSAE. The RMIT Racing Team produces a traditional combustion racing car, while the RMIT Electric Racing Team produces an electric vehicle.

Both teams are made up of RMIT students under the supervision of technical staff and academic advisors.

Inspired by teaching staff and created by students, Chirality is a game designed to help make learning chemistry fun.

The development team included undergraduate and postgraduate students studying computer science, information technology and software engineering.

“Chirality is doing really well on the App Store, with hundreds of downloads already and lots of interest in the US and Europe, but by expanding the app and making it available for Android many more students can use it,” Associate Professor Michelle Spencer said.

“Apple is fussy about what they accept onto the App Store, so it’s a testament to the students’ capabilities that our app was accepted first time, with no revisions required, particularly as the students had not developed an app before.”

When I was in Year 10, I had a friend in Year 12 who was doing higher education studies at RMIT. I thought, ‘That’s pretty cool — being in school and studying a university course. I want to do that.’

I learned technical skills and theory in Java and web programming, but also put that into practice developing a website, front and back end. It made me much stronger in programming.

Most of our assignments involved group work so I met loads of other RMIT students who shared their knowledge with me as well as what they liked. I learned about their other subjects so I knew what I was getting myself into before starting my software engineering degree.

What are prerequisites?

What’s a selection task?

Selection tasks (also known as selection requirements) are tasks that you are required to do in addition to your application for some RMIT programs.

These tasks give you the opportunity to display additional skills that are relevant to the program.

Does the published selection rank* guarantee entry?

The lowest rank to receive an offer published in RMIT guides and websites is from the previous year and should be used as a guideline only. It indicates the lowest selection rank to receive a Round 1 offer in the previous year.

Why isn’t there an ATAR published for some programs?

Some programs do not have a published ATAR. This might be because:

n the program does not select students based on ATAR or does not select on ATAR alone, but considers a range of criteria such as a folio, supplementary form or interview results

n the program is new, so there is no clearly-in ATAR from the previous year

n fewer than 10 current Year 12 offers were made the previous year

n applications for the program are not through VTAC.

What does school-based application mean?

Some certificate and diploma programs accept application directly to the RMIT school teaching the program. Check the program information at www.rmit.edu.au/programs for information on how to apply or contact Info Corner on tel. +61 3 9925 2260.

Tuition fees for associate, bachelor and honours degrees

Commonwealth supported places (CSP)

A Commonwealth supported place (CSP) is a place at university where the tuition fee is jointly paid by you and the Australian Government. Your share of the fee (student contribution) is set by the government and determined by the discipline areas (bands) of your individual enrolled courses (subjects), not the overall program. The table below indicates what your annual fee would be for a full-time study load in 2018 if enrolled in courses from a single band.

A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load or for enrolment in courses from a combination of bands.

The tuition fees you pay depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place, based on the eligibility criteria.

Victorian Government subsidised places

You will be offered a government subsidised place if you meet the eligibility criteria based on your citizenship, age and educational history. You must also reside in Victoria during your studies.
