Abbott Hall (1940)Built with $1.7 million from Abbott Laboratories and named after Dr. Wallace Calvin Abbott, the founder of Abbott Laboratories, this multi-use skyscraper dormitory was used to not only house medical students but also, leading up to and during WWII, Navy recruits, most famously President John F. Kennedy. Until 2012, Abbott Hall housed around 40 student apartments, and now contains the bookstore, Wildcard Office, Bursar’s Office, Religious Life Center, Financial Aid, Women’s Center, and Human Resources. Ten floors provide space for Feinberg’s Department of Family and Community Medicine, the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine, and Department of Psychiatry labs, among others.

Ward Building (1927)The Montgomery Ward Memorial Building was funded by Elizabeth Ward, widow of pioneer mail-order retailer and civic leader Aaron Montgomery Ward. She contributed $2.5 million toward the construction of the 19-story building, which was the world’s first academic skyscraper. Home of Galter Library and the Office of Medical Education along with many labs and classrooms.

Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (2017)In March of 2017, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) evolved to become the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. This new 1.2 million square foot facility became the first-ever “translational” research hospital in which clinicians, scientists, innovators, and technologists work together in the same space, surrounding patients, discovering new approaches, and applying research in real-time. Recognized as No. 1 in rehabilitation for 28 years in a row, the AbilityLab is made up of five innovation centers: brain; spinal cord; nerve, muscle, and bone; pediatric; and cancer.

Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center (2019)June 2019 marked the official opening of the new Louis A. Simpson and Kimberly K. Querrey Biomedical Research Center. With 12 floors of space dedicated to scientific inquiry, this is the largest building solely intended for biomedical research at an American medical school. With curved glass exteriors, light-filled laboratory neighborhoods, and critical connections to existing buildings and hospitals on campus (including a physical connection to the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center next door), this new center for discovery is enabling scientific innovation and collaboration to thrive on our campus. More on page 11.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital (1972)In 2019, U.S. News and World Report ranked Northwestern Memorial as the top hospital in both Chicago and Illinois for the eighth consecutive year and No. 10 in the nation. It is the flagship campus for Northwestern Medicine and the primary teaching hospital for Feinberg. Northwestern Memorial provides a total of 894 inpatient beds and encompasses more than 3 million square feet of medical buildings. Nearly every medical specialty is represented by over 1,900 physicians on the medical staff at Northwestern Memorial who also carry faculty appointments at Feinberg.

Ann. & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (2012)The hospital formerly known as Children’s Memorial Hospital moved to the Streeterville location from Lincoln Park in June 2012. The move was designed to foster collaboration with the medical school and to allow the transition of younger patients into adult care at Northwestern Medicine hospitals. In 2016, the hospital became the first children’s hospital in Illinois to be designated as a level 1 pediatric surgery center by the American College of Surgeons.

Mentoring is more important than ever in the growing landscape of medicine. We offer several opportunities for you to make a difference by mentoring students and fellow alumni, both on campus or from your home. We are always looking for new alumni mentors.

Mentoring

“We all strive to hold ourselves to perfection. Life and the world we live in aren’t perfect. Always do your best for your patients but remember perfection is an elusive, unattainable goal. Be kind to yourself when you were not perfect, but did the best you could do.”

—David A. Lickstein, ’93 MD, ’94 GMER, FACS, giving advice to a graduating M4

Connects alumni with fourth-year medical students as they begin their long-anticipated interview season. Through HOST, Feinberg alumni help offset the financial burden of travel for residency interviews by offering housing, meals, and/or transportation, as well as invaluable advice about the community in which they are interviewing.

“The HOST program was incredibly valuable to me during my interview travels. I found so much joy

connecting with alumni in cities around the country and hearing about their careers at Northwestern

and beyond. It was wonderful to return to the comforts of a home after interviews and pre-interview

dinners, getting an idea of what it’s like to live in various cities. The monetary savings of the HOST

program were also a huge benefit during a costly interview season! I could not recommend HOST

enough—it’s a truly unique feature from Northwestern that I felt lucky to take advantage of.”

—Arianna Yanes, ’19 MD

“The HOST program not only

eases the burden of travel

expenses for fourth-year

medical students as they

travel to all of their residency

interviews, it also helps

connect students with alumni,

and it’s a great way for

alumni to learn more about

the experiences of current

medical students. For those

who are unable to return to

campus regularly, the HOST

program allows alumni to stay

up-to-date on the current

state of the medical school.”

This program unites alumni with students who want to learn about the lives of physicians—how they made their specialty choice, what they actually do all day, how they balance work, family, and life, lessons they have learned, and what they would do differently. Each session is held on the medical school campus.

These casual alumni-hosted dinners give current students the opportunity to discuss careers in medicine and to develop mentoring relationships. These intimate affairs typically pair 4–6 students per alumni physician, and allow students to learn about daily work and lives outside of medicine, as well as how to make the most of their medical school, residency, and fellowship training.

The Nathan Smith Davis Society recognizes the generous contributions of Feinberg alumni and other supporters of the medical school. This giving society honors their philanthropic commitment and the achievements that would not be possible without this partnership.

Alumni and friends have made such an incredible impact. Thanks to your generous support, we have raised nearly $100 million designated for scholarships during the last 5 years. We have now eclipsed $211 million toward an $800 million goal of providing tuition support to all medical students.

During the 2018-2019 school year:

Out of 684 medical students, 291 (42.5%) received some level of financial support from named scholarships.

Nearly 12% of these students received in excess of $29,000.

Nearly 70% of these students were provided $15,000 or more in funds.

Of Feinberg medical students who have debt, the average amount is $198,044, reflecting both tuition and cost of living. (Compared to our peers, we are still at the higher end of debt but are making inroads through the support of alumni and friends.)

We were pleased to be on the forefront of top medical schools making scholarship support a priority. Other elite schools have similarly launched full tuition initiatives, so we must continue to emphasize scholarship fundraising as we compete for the best students nationally.

We still have a lot more to do and are grateful for your partnership in this endeavor.
