‘ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID’S CITY’ (First two verses Junior Concert Choir only)

1. Once in Royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

ALL SING - PLEASE STAND 3. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be Mild, obedient, good as he. 4. For he is our childhood's pattern, Day by day like us he grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles like us he knew: And he feeleth for our sadness, And he shareth in our gladness. 5. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place where he is gone. 6. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

‘PEOPLE LOOK EAST’ (arr. Martin Shaw) People, look East. The time is near of the crowning of the year. Make your house fair as you are able, trim the hearth and set the table. People, look East and sing to-day: Love, the Guest, is on the way. 2 Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there: give up your strength the seed to nourish, that in course the flower may flourish. People, look East, and sing today: Love, the Rose, is on the way. 3 Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim, one more light the bowl shall brim, shining beyond the frosty weather, bright as sun and moon together. People, look East, and sing today: Love, the Star, is on the way. 4 Angels, announce with shouts of mirth him who brings new life to earth. Set every peak and valley humming with the word, the Lord is coming. People, look East, and sing today: Love, the Lord, is on the way. ELEANOR FARJEON 1881-1965

‘ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY 1. Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth; ye who sang creation's story now proclaim Messiah's birth: (refrain) Come and worship Christ the new-born King. 2 Shepherds in the field abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant Light: (refrain) Come and worship Christ the new-born King. 3 Sages, leave your contemplations; brighter visions beam afar; seek the great Desire of Nations; ye have seen his natal star: (refrain) Come and worship Christ the new-born King And hear the Angels sing.

GOOD KING WENCESLAS (Verses 2 & 4 sung by John Kimbell & Junior Choir only)

1. Good King Wenceslas looked out, On the feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, Deep and crisp and even: Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gath'ring winter fuel.

MEN 3. "Bring me flesh and bring me wine. Bring me pine logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither." Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together, Through the rude wind's wild lament And the bitter weather

(SOLOIST AND JUNIOR CONCERT CHOIR ONLY) JCC 4. "Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger: Fails my heart, I know not how, I can go no longer." King: "Mark my footsteps, good my page; Tread thou in them boldly: Thou shalt find the winter's rage Freeze thy blood less coldly."

ALL 5. In his master's steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted: Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor Shall yourselves find blessing

Our Ensembles and choirs The 5Ts Brass Quintet

Five brass players from Woodley Concert Band and Trinity Concert Band came together in 2017 and decided to form a new quintet. The group comprises two trumpets, two trombones and a tuba, an unusual combination but one that works well. Using the instruments’ initials, they settled on 5Ts Brass as the group’s name.

Three members of the ensemble were professional musicians with the army, but all the members are now retired. They play light classical pieces, folk songs, popular pieces and original compositions for brass ensemble. The members of the quintet are: John Sayer - Trumpet, Phil Graham – Trumpet, Stephen Kerry – Alto Trombone, Dave Robson – Tenor Trombone and Len Tyler – Tuba. Contact them by email at [email protected] or at www.facebook.com/5TsBrass..

St Mary’s Handbell ringers The handbell ringers are directed by Jill Glennerster, who has been ringing hand bells for many years now at Winkfield St. Mary's, as well as with other groups. With no musical background, it has been a steep learning curve to get the ringing and management of the group to where it is today. Now, the group improves year on year, and performs a large repertoire of music in many settings. As well as regular performances in church, Jill encourages members of the group to join her in opportunities to participate in massed ringing at Guildford Cathedral and the South East Region Bell Orchestra. Members of the team are: Debby Walker Helena Hickling Jill Glennerster

Our team With many thanks to all the musicians, singers, organisers and volunteers who have made this concert possible.

Programme Notes ‘Once in Royal David's City’ is a Christmas carol originally written as a poem by Cecil Frances Alexander (née Humphreys) and was published in 1848 in Miss Cecil Humphreys' hymnbook ‘Hymns for little Children’.

‘Rejoice, rejoice!’ is a setting by Anthony Hodson of Christmas carol words written by his father Harry Hodson (1906-1999). It sets the joyousness as well as the mystery of the Christmas story.. The ‘Sans Day Carol’ is a traditional Cornish carol, from the village of St Day, set by the famous Cambridge choir director John Rutter

The oboe is an ancient double-reed instrument, with an important solo role in orchestras. There are similar folk instruments all over the world. Its plaintive tone gives it a special voice.

The bassoon is a bit like a very large oboe, and it too has an important solo role in orchestras. It is a versatile instrument also with a distinctive tone, and it is sometimes regarded as the clown of the orchestra.

Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) is one of the best known French composers of the early 20th century. His music is witty and lyrical, and his use of lively harmonies take him well out of the 19th century

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was an Italian Baroque composer, famous not only for his operas but also for his instrumental works.

People Look East is Martin Shaw’s setting of Eleanor Farjeon’s Advent poem using a melody from Bezançon in eastern France.

‘Something Special’ is a jazzy song by American composer Rachel Kincaid that celebrates the amazing activity in Bethlehem.

‘In the bleak Mid winter’ is Dr Harold Darke’s beautiful setting of Christina Rossetti’s well known poem, normally sung to Gustav Holst’s great melody.

‘The Kings they came’ is Anthony Hodson’s setting, for 2 or 3 part children’s choir, of American poet Sarah Teasdale’s charming poem.

‘Jesus Christ the Apple Tree’ is a beautiful and well known modern carol, often sung by top choirs. Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987) was a pianist and composer, having been a prize-winning student at the Royal Academy of Music.

‘The little road to Bethlehem’ is a favourite modern carol composed by English composer Michael Head (1900-1976), professor of piano for many years at the Royal Academy of Music

‘Rapping Paper’ is the work of Ben Parry, who is a leading choral director, composer and singer and among other senior posts is Artistic Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.

‘Torches’ is a well-known carol written by British composer John Joubert who died this year aged 91. He recalls visiting carol singers who sang the piece outside his house without realising that he was the composer. He wrote a large number of pieces, mostly choral.

Darrol Barry (1956-2018) started his musical life in a brass band playing the tuba. He studied at Salford U and later at the Royal College of Music. As a successful composer and arranger and general musician, he still loved the world of the Brass Band!

‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ started in 1907 as a melody by the American composer JW Bratton, later, in 1932 given words (pleasing to children) by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy.

Handel’s ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ is surely one of the best known piece in the choral repertoire. It ends the second part of ‘The Messiah’ which was written by Handel at breakneck speed (it took him 6 weeks) and was first performed (in Dublin) in 1742, Performed in London a year later, it has become on of the most popular large-scale choral works ever.

What a Way to end our concert!!! Acknowledgements to Wikipedia for many details in these notes.
