The timing for crucial conversations on advancing Canada-Africa commercial relations, particularly in the agriculture sector, has never been more important. To make major advances, key players across the entire value chain - i.e. farmers, agribusiness owners, policymakers, business leaders, academics, research scientists, ag. university administrators, equipment manufacturers, investors, nanciers, innovation experts, entrepreneurs, development partners and others must be at the table.

In June 2014, during the 23rd Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the AU Heads of State and Government adopted the Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods. The event also marked the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme1 (CAADP). The CAADP is Africa’s policy framework for agricultural transformation, wealth creation, food security and nutrition, economic growth and prosperity for all.

In 2016, the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) unveiled the Feed Africa Strategy2 - an agricultural transformation policy framework for a competitive and inclusive agribusiness sector.

In the same vein, the Government of Canada's Trade and Development interventions in Africa’s agriculture sector are based, principally, on the Progressive Trade Agenda3, and the Food Security Strategy4. The Progressive Trade Agenda supports all segments of society in taking advantage of the economic opportunities owing from trade and investment. Canada’s Food Security Strategy for developing countries focuses on three key areas: (i) food assistance and nutrition (ii) sustainable agricultural development and (iii) research and development.

The food processing sector is expected to account for a signicant portion of the ongoing industrial expansion in Africa. Africa alone is expected to contribute more than half of the 2.4 billion increase in global population by 2050, while the continent’s food and beverages sub-sector is expected to reach $1 trillion in value by 2030. Therefore, the ability to grow and access nutritious and sustainable food will be critical in the coming years.

Canada is a world leader in agriculture and agri-food, with cutting-edge expertise in sustainable farming, research, innovation, technology, food and beverage processing, aquaculture, logistics hubs, trade and market development, among others. This presents a huge opportunity for both jurisdictions to work together.

To diversify successfully, small and medium-sized enterprises require a nuanced understanding of where the opportunities lie, and how to successfully break into global and regional value chains. The Summit offers participants unparalleled opportunities to network, develop commercial partnerships and tour agricultural facilities and institutions.

The Summit is aimed principally at establishing and consolidating Canada-Africa networks in the agriculture and agri-food industries, by bringing together industry, academia and government to create benecial partnerships and advance industry's innovation capabilities. Key players from Canada and Africa's agriculture and food industries will participate5.

At the end of the two-day Summit on Wednesday, interested delegates will participate in business-to-business meetings and a tour to explore Canadian farming operations, food processing facilities, agriculture and farm equipment manufacturing plants, logistics hubs, analytical equipment, research infrastructure and teaching facilities. This tour is aimed at helping the visiting delegation visualize the entire agricultural value chain, in addition to developing benecial partnerships.

The Canada-Africa Agriculture Projects Database (CAAPD) is a web portal, which provides summary information on major opportunities in the Canadian and African agriculture and agri-food sectors – by description, sub-sector, value, jurisdiction, schedule, project contact, status etc. The purpose of the CAAPD is to serve as a pre-summit, virtual marketplace aimed at facilitating interactions between African delegates and Canadian agricultural manufacturers, suppliers, research scientists, innovators, potential investors, nanciers and other key players in the entire value chain. This integrated data platform will help increase participants’ level of preparedness, by enabling pre-summit discussions on the possibility of working together.
