This calendar highlights our achievements over the course of the last academic year.

Boston Scores is incredibly grateful for the generous support of the Greater Boston Community that makes our programs possible. As we entered our 20th anniversary in 2018, we continued to expand the reach and scope of our nationally recognized programs. This year alone we are serving 2,000 students and, with your continued support, we plan to double this number by 2026!

We hope to see you in 2019!

Boston Scores is one of the largest school-based after-school providers in Boston. Our programs are rooted in the team dynamics created through our soccer teams. We use the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s “Soccer

for Success” curriculum that emphasizes nutrition education, fitness, family engagement, and mentorship. These teams meet on the field for soccer practices and games, and also meet in the classroom where

they engage in team-based experiential enrichment programs such as our nationally acclaimed “Power of Poetry” and “One Hen” social entrepreneurship programs. Ultimately, we are developing the whole child and

positioning students for success beyond high school.

For the first time in 20 years, Boston Scores served all grades from K-12. The opportunity to pilot our Junior Scores program came about through our new designation as a Portfolio Partner with BPS and with the generous support of donors who are helping to underwrite the costs associated with designing and implementing this new program model. Our Junior Scores curriculum blends a fun introduction to the game of soccer with a social-emotional learning curriculum called “Playing with Words”.

We completed our second year of One Hen programming after Boston Scores acquired the social entrepreneurship program in the fall of 2016. Students had the chance to participate in year-round programming for the first time since the acquisition. Through generous funding from FactSet, our Program Director traveled to Chicago, Cleveland, and San Francisco to train and implement One Hen pilots in each city during the spring of 2018. America SCORES New York also ran One Hen for a second consecutive spring season. In 2018, One Hen reached over 700 youth across the America SCORES network.

During the winter season, we hosted our first unified Poets’ Banquet together with our affiliate America SCORES New York. The participants of the Poet’s Banquet are select students who are chosen not only for their writing and performance abilities but also for their commitment, leadership and love of poetry. Under the guidance of our writing coaches, these students attend multiple specialized writing workshops and prepare for their performance. We congratulate our Poets of the Year, Robert and Avah. Thanks for sharing your poems with us!

We ran the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success curriculum at 29 Boston Public Schools in 12 neighborhoods. Our soccer coach-mentors focused on a different soccer and healthy living or nutrition topic at each practice throughout their entire season, while also preparing for their weekly interscholastic game days. Thanks to generous support from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, we were able to improve our coach to student ratio from 15:1 to 7:1.

Our Hatch the Future event marked the end of the spring season for One Hen and took place at District Hall in the Seaport District of Boston. Guests were able to enjoy an evening of innovation, food, and fun as they celebrated our youth entrepreneurs. This was a chance to visit our student marketplace and learn about their businesses and the causes they are supporting: Over $1,300 were donated to 13 charities. This event well surpassed our fundraising goal thanks to its generous sponsors - The Muri Foundation, FactSet, Imago Dei Fund, Liberty Mutual, East Boston Savings Bank, and many generous donors.

Our two Athletics Program Managers and four of our high school students had the chance to visit the FIFA Foundation Festival 2018 in Moscow during the World Cup. The FIFA Foundation Festival brought together 48 NGO’s from across 5 continents for a week of learning about soccer as a tool for social change.

Additionally, High School Program Manager Ethan Goldman traveled to the Haitian town of Akaye in July 2018 to run a week-long Football For Good camp.

During July and August of 2018, we served 140 elementary school kids at The Mario Umana Academy in East Boston and the Henry Grew Elementary School in Hyde Park as part of our Summer Learning Academies. In the mornings, students worked on stemming summer learning loss in the areas of English language, arts and math through expeditionary learning. In the afternoon, the students chose from a wide range of different activities including soccer and poetry as well as different field trips. With the help of its numerous partners, Boston Scores was able to provide unique experiences to its students such as a soccer clinic at Gillette stadium, a visit from the New England Aquarium and a visit from Kids Cooking Green.

2018 was an amazing year for the Boston Scores High School Program. Our enrollment doubled over the previous year and we had 6 full teams competing in the BAYS league in the spring thanks to our partnership with South End Soccer. This summer, we ran a 7v7 league for Boston high school boys and girls. In addition to much success on the field, our high school student-athletes could also choose from a menu of different professional development opportunities. These included workshops at RacePoint Global, Fidelity Investments and Simmons College, a day of volunteering at Community Servings and visiting UMass Boston and Emmanuel College.

Marking the start of the school year 2017/18, we gave our annual Celebration a unique twist. Our event featured a World Cup inspired restaurant theme and a 30’x60’ soccer field in the venue for our students to showcase their learned skills. This was also a chance to highlight our very own U18 MTOC champions. Our guests enjoyed themselves with entertaining activities including cornhole, accuracy kick, and bubble soccer with our special guests from the New England Revolution.

Using the America SCORES Power of Poetry curriculum to guide students throughout our 8-week Fall season, the Boston Scores Poetry Slam is a culmination of weeks of writing, editing and rehearsals of individual and team poems. The Slam invites elementary school teams to perform their spoken-word pieces on stage to a crowd of friends, families, school teachers and administrators and other Scores schools. Our school year 2017/2018 Slam gathered all 360 students from 12 elementary schools along with their coaches to the packed Strand Theater in Dorchester.

Our fall end of season event, The Pitch, took place at Hormel Stadium. This inaugural event was created for teams to explore issues in their local and global communities as well as charities and organizations that support those issues. This event provided 300 Boston Public Middle School student-athletes an opportunity to present their business plans and sales pitches to a panel of judges. Teams received funding for their businesses based on the judges’ responses and launched their businesses in the spring of 2018.
