Our 10th RV International Jazz Festival - SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

You’re reading this, so you’ll be in Ribble Valley for a day or longer for the festival over the Bank Holiday Weekend? Remember…the festival is open to all; Something for Everyone! Read on.

There’s a great choice of music in 20+ indoor/outdoor venues in our lovely market town and rural countryside. Spend 5 days listening to great music at ticketed/free gigs then stay longer to visit a beautiful environment. Clitheroe is a good town. Small shops; coffee houses; selection of restaurants, wine bars & hotels.

Something for Everyone? One significant aim for this enterprising festival is to be “the most culturally diverse,

accessible jazz event in the UK”. Our programme, and audiences, need to be representative of people living & working in the UK. We want to make this happen. Thanks to encouragement and financial support from the Arts Council England, and from local businesses/organisations, it will!

Our programme and audiences should deliver access to higher quality arts programmes; will be more equally representative of women, children & young people, people from minority communities, disabled people, people on low incomes, people from across the UK, and from international communities. Achieving diversity will become reality as long as our music programme is influenced by jazz’s black music heritage and its roots in oppression. Thus, our broad based programme includes jazz, soul, funk, fusion, Rn’B, and cross-arts - poetry; classical. THE GEOFF GWYTHER CONCERT The opening gig for RVJazz Fest at Holmes Mill is a treat! It’s Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox, a music virtuoso and one of Britain’s greatest ever blues/rock vocalists & musicians. His vocals are great, AND he plays keyboards/brass/guitar. Victor ranks alongside the likes of Joe Cocker and Stevie Marriott. Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Victor’s. Jimi endorsed his talent, jamming, & played with him and the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation on many occasions in London and New York. Victor studied under a wide

variety of blues pioneers such as Big Bill Broonzy, Bo Diddley, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Boy Williamson and has played with B B King, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillian (of Deep Purple), Dr John, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Graham Bond, Nico and Marc Bolan – to name but a few!In the late 1960s, Victor Brox was the front man of Aynsley Dunbar’s Retaliation and also appeared as member of many blues outfits or as guest on several blues albums (vocals and sometimes keyboards). They released four albums: ‘Retaliation’, ‘Doctor Dunbar’s Prescription’, ‘To Mum from Aynsley and the Boys’ and ‘Remains to be Heard.

A new festival event, a singing workshop for children, ages 7 to 11, run by local artist (& Festival Manager) Katie Wlodarczyk. Two separate Singing for Children’s workshops (Saturday - Library, Monday - Holmes Mill). Katie believes singing is essential for youth well-being and health. Let your little angels have a sing-song of some fun jazzy tunes whilst you relax. Parents may leave their children in the hour-long workshop, then come back at the end for a mini concert performance. Or stay for the hour and observe the lesson. Pay-As-you-Feel!

This concert is dedicated to the memory of Alan Rimmer.

The 2019 Jazz Festival celebrates with a Friday evening headline concert witnessing the return of two wonderful jazz singers, Claire Martin and Liane Carroll, both multiple award winners.

They will perform as a duo for the first time at the Festival, both returning to Clitheroe following previously popular festival performances.

Top UK singer Claire Martin OBE gained the 2018 British Jazz Award for the Best Vocalist, an award achieved on seven previous

occasions. Liane Carroll, equally brilliant, and an effortlessly fabulous pianist, also has numerous awards to her credit including Best Vocalist in the 2016 British Jazz Awards.

Friends since their late teens, these two artists will share their love of the Great American Songbook with the intimacy, passion and humour they are known for. With solos, duets and piano accompaniment, Claire and Liane will reel off songs from Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin alongside more contemporary songs by Tom Waits, and Joni Mitchell. Claire Martin’s last appearance at Ribble Valley Jazz Festival in 2017 featured a superb vocal masterclass with a number of aspirational participants gaining a valuable and enriching experience.

This year, the Festival goes one better by offering this incredible opportunity to attend a more immersive 4 hour workshop in the intimate company of two of the UK’s best female, award-winning, jazz singers; Claire Martin and Liane Carroll. The workshop is open to 12 singers only.

1.30pm-2.30pm: Blowjangles. Enjoy Yourself, Enjoy Yourself is the Blowjangles message to town centre shoppers.

2.30pm-3.30pm: Wrong Direction. Barber’s Shop Choir. The second appearance for this fairly new local group comprising 8 singers for a unique performance.

3.30pm-4pm: Astrid. Here is Astrid, an amazing 9 year old Jazz singer! She has already made several festival appearances at other venues!

4pm-5/5.15pm: Two Rivers Swing Band. from Ilkley. Expect some fine sining tunes from Ilkley’s top big band.

Here’s a chance for two outstanding bands of young musicians to make their name thanks to Jazz North’s commitment to nurturing and showcasing young talent. In selecting the two bands, a panel prioritised musical excellence, creativity, innovation and potential.

Slow Loris & Jasmine are beneficiaries of the ‘Jazz North Introduces’ scheme which offers high-profile exposure at leading northern festivals for up-and-coming jazz musicians.

2pm: Slow Loris “Dark, intense and energetic” say the band consisting of Sam Lowther (guitar), Sam Evans (guitar), Chris Sellers (bass), and Theo Goss (drums). Their music incorporates rock/metal influences, alongside electronic music & hip-hop, whilst rooted in jazz. They enjoy creating fresh, original music.

3.30pm: Jasmine. Reflecting the growing scene across the

UK, Jasmine combines influences of jazz and hip-hop, using Ableton Live to introduce layered horn parts over a traditional saxophone led jazz quintet. The band comprises Jasmine Whalley (alto saxophone), Ben Haskins (guitar), George MacDonald (piano), Owen Burns (bass) and George Hall (drums).

The Ribble Valley Jazz Festival has a long standing commitment to develop young musicians and increase participation in performing jazz. Members (and ex-members) of the Jam Experiment group have featured at our festival since they were students at

Manchester’s Chethams School of Music. Bonsai are now helping blood the next generation of musicians, because we have commissioned trombonist Rory Ingham and violinist/vocalist Dominic Ingham to write new music for performance by the CRGS Swing Band.

This concert will see the CRGS Swing Band perform two new tunes as part of their festival swing band session accompanied by young jazzers from Bonsai. CRGS performance will be followed by the 5 piece Bonsai band - an established and experienced young London based band, making their third festival appearance.


Cold Bath Street return to the organic interactions of classic groups such as Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead and Can.

Those who joined Cold Bath Street for the morning workshop will have the chance to guest as part of this show, so expect the unexpected.

Ubunye unites singers hailing from Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa (now Huddersfield-based) with gospel and

R’n’B players from Yorkshire. Imagine raw power of African voices in harmony; the funding rhythm of Africa, blended with the explosive energy of a live band. Vibrant Zulu performers and seasoned UK musicians combine ancient tradition with contemporary flare. Definitely a Chance for a Dance!

Isaac Burituro & the Rail Abandon bring a specially commissioned international band performance, featuring superstar Ghanian xylophonist Isaac Burituro playing with the Rail Abandon, a group of brilliant UK based musicians led by Grammy Award winning producer Sonny Johns. Recently signed to the groundbreaking Wah Wah 45s label in London and premiered on BBC 6 Music by Tom Ravenscroft, this will be an 8-piece band playing joyous West African soaked grooves with vocals and horn section wrapped around Isaac’s virtuosic xylophone skills, more food for the dance floor!

And if that wasn’t enough, the Wah Wah 45s label will be bringing its 20th birthday celebrations to our 10th, so expect more fireworks on the dance floor from label manager and DJ Dom Servini, as the Festival party night enjoys an extension into the early hours on a Bank Holiday weekend.

Jazz North’s Northernline programme presents a splendid double-header concert with some very popular and experienced musicians based in the North East.

Mark Williams has worked with some of the top jazz musicians in the country, and currently a member of Zoe Gilby’s quartet as well as other varying musical outfits throughout the North East. Mark has finally put together his own trio to showcase his own compositional and improvisational talents.

Saxophonist Alan Barnes makes his fourth appearance since our first festival in 2010. An ever-popular stalwart of UK jazz, Alan is a regular award winner who features at many high profile festivals, frequently delivering a remarkable programme with his Octet that features a very high quality, experienced and versatile line-up. The musicianship from this member of Leeds College of Music alumni is first class. His special talent of engaging with the audience through his music, and with his charm and wit, can hardly be bettered!

The Grand Venue will be a perfect stage for this notable band, and Alan Barnes’ Sunday afternoon programme aimed at delivering ‘A Short and Incomplete History of Jazz’ will prove to be a compelling concert for a festival audience. The programme? - Short, because it’s a 2 hour gig - Incomplete because it only includes the band’s favourite bits! Well, if it only includes tunes from Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong, through Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan to Coltrane, that will be a very attractive proposition!

Sharing an aspiration for ‘bringing diverse communities together’ we are delighted to invite Manchester Inspirational Voices - one of the UK’s most popular community gospel choirs - to the Ribble Valley for the first time.

The choir’s performance at Clitheroe’s St Mary’s Parish Church will be a stirring moment for choir lovers and jazz fans, performed by a Choir named ‘Gospel Choir of the Year’ in 2016 by the BBC. The choir presents a great sense of friendship and excitement, performances are moving and passionate. Their voices and astounding music arrangements on original and cover songs reflect a vision of hope.

MIV’s prime purpose is to introduce faith in an encouraging way, to guide, develop and support diverse communities to live well together through music and singing. MIV promotes local community togetherness, valuing individuals, creating inclusive opportunities for all people, and encouraging individuals to sing with freedom and self-confidence. This will be a special concert and very fitting in this, the Festival’s 10th birthday.

Ribble Valley International Jazz Festival is thrilled to welcome one of Europe’s trailblazing jazz groups to headline the Sunday night of the festival. In April 2011, Norwegian born/Copenhagen based saxophonist Marius Neset released his debut album Golden Xplosion which led to the saxophonist and composer becoming one of the most talked about newcomers on the European jazz scene. He appears with his quintet for a return trip to Clitheroe.

His album releases – Birds (2013), Lion (2014) and Pinball (2015) - have proved that Neset is “on his way to being one of the biggest new draws on the circuit” with five years of heavy touring behind him, including sold out shows at some of Europe’s most prestigious festivals including North Sea Jazz, Stuttgart Jazzopen and Kongsberg Jazz Festival.

This event comprises two workshops and a public performance.

A trombone heavy eight piece band the “Living Story Music Ensemble” featuring project leader Chris Bridges, presents a set of songs inspired by Bulgakov’s depiction of the devil’s May Ball in his novel “The Master and Margarita”.

Chris’s music draws on the roots of jazz and blues. His songs will have you up and dancing, albeit with moments of chaos and darkness. At given points in the performance, in various songs, the trombone trio will be swelled by a huge trombone choir, comprising trombone beginners and experienced players. The sheer noise will make you join in the march of this macabre parade!

Are you a trombonist, attracted by the spectacular trombone event in RV Jazz Festival 2019? Would you like to join/perform in the 3pm Trombone Spectacular performance of “The Midnight Parade”? Then sign up for one or both of our trombone workshops. We will be learning parts for the show, as well as practicing jazz improvisation alongside the amazing musicians of the Living Story Music Ensemble.

The Workshops will be:1pm - for beginner/inexperienced trombonists If you have never played a trombone and would like to join in with this performance, then come along to the first workshop at 1pm, when we will get you playing your first notes on a pBone (special plastic trombone!). You can then stay for the second workshop to practice your parts for the show, as well as having a go at improvising. Plastic pBone trombones provided if needed!

2pm - for experienced trombone trombonists. We will be working on ideas for jazz improvisation, as well as learning and practicing the parts for the 3pm show.
