MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

DIRECTOR REPORTS

2019-20 has been a year of many successes and challenges. The year opened with excellent growth in membership, continued with great dedication and commitment to beach patrols and competition and then faced the challenges of bushfires, storms, floods and the Covid-19 pandemic. These successes and challenges showed the strength of our Club as we all supported each other through both the achievements and challenges.

The patrol statistics for 2019-20 highlight our success in providing a safer beach: • Beach Attendance in patrol hours: .......................38,345

• Rescues ................. (14 with 7 outside the flagged area)

• Preventative Actions: ................................................581

• Ambulance call outs ......................................................2

• Beach Closed ................................................................9

I want to congratulate all our patrol members who formed 12 Patrols this year. Each patrol was well trained and equipped. The quality of our training was demonstrated in each rescue, first aid, preventative action and in our strong performance in the Patrol Inspections. Our membership numbers showed good growth in 2019-20, particularly in our Junior ranks

Patrol activity had to finish a month earlier than normal due to the Covid-19 restrictions that affected so many aspects of our daily lives. These restrictions also impacted our Club’s finances with the loss of some income streams

The Club was very fortunate to commence 2019-20 in a very strong financial position but the extensive bushfires, major storms and Covid-19 all affected our income through a combination of reduced visitor numbers, damage to our clubhouse and closure of the clubhouse.

I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to help with fund raising. raffles, donations, sponsorship, bar & hall operations, grants and the wonderful support of local, state and federal levels of government being important contributors

The Club is fortunate to have the support of our sponsors and supporters. Belle Property, Barefoot Café, Freewater Plumbing, WEX Motorpass, Macquarie Foundation, Greenstone

Partners, Sea Coast Fishing, Ability Links and a great many generous donors. The Club’s commitment to, and participation in, surf sports was very commendable in 2019/20. Good results were achieved at local carnivals, and also at branch and state level but a combination of storms and Covid-19 restriction saw the cancellation of some of the Branch competitions and the complete cancellation of the Australian Titles. I want to congratulate everyone who represented our Club and to thank all those who helped support and train our competitors.

Surfboat rowing in 2019/20 continued the strong tradition of the Club in this iconic surf sport, with multiple male and female crews. The commitment of these crews to their chosen sport and to their club patrol activities is a great asset for our Club.

The activities at our beach every weekend in nippers, skills training, the Sunday Point Score Swim & Board and Macs Maniacs shows the enjoyment our members get from being at the beach and forms an important base for our patrol and surf sports activities. We saw a number of successful community events in 2019/20 including the Prawn and Oyster Luncheon, Five Lands Walk, the 2018/19 Junior & Senior Presentations, Christmas Carols, Christmas Drinks, and State of Origin nights. Sadly, our ANZAC Day service was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award program continues as an important opportunity for our younger members to excel in community service and personal achievement. The Duke program provides an important link between our junior and senior activities

Our website, monthly Point Break newsletter and Facebook and Instagram sites are widely read and enjoyed by all members.

The Club’s administration has been in excellent hands with all the complexities of financial and regulatory administration and reporting completed with a minimum of fuss. I want to thank the many members who work behind the scenes to get all these tasks done.

The Club’s Board of Directors has done a wonderful job in steering our Club and I want to thank Kylie Dickinson, David White, John Evans, Michael Norman, Peter Roden, Alison McNeill, Craig Lee and Graham Johnston for their outstanding work.

I also want to thank the staff and directors of Surf Life Saving Central Coast for the support they have provided across the season.

2019/20 has been an extraordinary year for the Club and its members. We all hope for better times and I look forward to seeing all our members back on the beach for the 2020/21 season.

2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT

What a season to take on this role as Deputy President! Not only have I had to fill the very big shoes of Jan Sillato, we have also had a finish to the season unlike anyone has ever experienced. I am pleased to report, despite the turmoil of Covid-19, that our donors, supporters and major sponsors have all been extremely generous with their time and contributions to our surf club.

We value our major sponsors Belle Real Estate – Killcare and Barefoot Café, operated by Richard and Varisra, who not only provide great food to our patrons, but also supply meals to our volunteer bar staff every weekend.

We are grateful to our generous and long-term supporters Macquarie Bank and Loo Loos Coffee Shack Furthermore, thanks to JD’s Family Automotive, who are always available to service our IRB motors and who provide assistance whenever required. Also, to Pete and Sue Offner of Seacoast Fishing, who continue to provide our club with amazing seafood platters, which we raffle throughout the season. The group that can raise the most money selling raffle tickets for these popular platters has become our favourite unofficial competition this season. The Boaties may have won the title this year, but I can’t see the Masters losing out next year. Many thanks also go to the support and advice provided by Ability Links NSW, who assist the club to be more inclusive.

We welcome James Lewry from Advanced Building as a new sponsor of the club this year.

In addition, our club continually receives donations, big and small from all parts of the community. These generous donations facilitate the maintenance, improvement and sustainability of our nipper gear, patrol gear and club in general. A big thank you to each and every person who kindly donated to MacMasters Beach SLSC. This includes a number of local community groups who also support our club with generous contributions of time and money throughout the season. Thanks to the Ladies Social Club, the Garden Club and the Bridge Club in particular. These groups form a major part of our local community and we are grateful for their continued support.

The Club has been extremely lucky in its acquisition of the skills of Rachel Dunne, who is very talented when it comes to finding and applying for grants. Various grant applications were submitted and successful this year. A successful grant from Davistown RSL allowed us to purchase two new racing mals for our Masters, and a grant from Central Coast Council went towards the financial support of the Artisan Show, which unfortunately could not go ahead due to quarantine rules.

We also received generous Government funding and support from Surf Life Saving NSW, enabling our club to access important lifesaving equipment, giving our patrol members the necessary equipment to keep our community and visitors safe on the beach all year round.

Our club members, once again, walked the streets accepting kind donations of our neighbours in our annual door knock appeal. A significant amount of money was collected that morning, in appreciation of the great job our patrolling members do in keeping MacMasters Beach safe.

Thanks must also go to our honorary auditors, Fortunity Chartered Accountants & Financial Planners, who provide their valuable services all year round and also to our honorary legal officer, Alan Bingham of Peninsula Law. Their continued support and advice ensure our club runs smoothly and with the required compliance.

A personal thank you must go to Jan Sillato, not just for the time she gave up so that I could be comfortable in the role of Deputy President from the start, but for all the contributions and support she still gives to the club in her ‘spare’ time. Although I have only been in this role for 12 months, I have decided to move into a position on the board that I feel is better suited to my skill set which is the role of Director of Competition. I welcome Matt Hingerty to the role of Deputy President.

I sincerely thank our many sponsors and supporters for being part of our club’s success this season. It has been my pleasure to work with you all, and MacMasters Beach SLSC is thriving because of your genuine kindness and dedication to our club.

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

The season started exceptionally well. A very healthy membership of some 700 with a good mix of age and experience as well as active and non-active all contributing to the club’s voluntary operation.

The clubhouse operations were smooth and efficient under the ‘volunteer’ model with all involved effectively and efficiently performing their functions interactively and co-operatively with the rest of the team. Members and the community enjoyed the excellent facilities resulting from the clubhouse renovation of the previous year. The close and interactive relationship between the club and the community continued manifested in particular by a very successful annual door knock appeal, the vigour of the Ladies Social Club, the Bridge Club and the Garden Club. Everything was going smoothly and the best surf club on the coast was into another great year.

Then it hit – Covid 19 arrived. The world was not turned upside down – it just stopped. The club was frozen. No club activity

was permitted at all - not even physical meetings. The world of the ‘virtual’ meetings arrived. Matt Judd arranged, at ‘no cost’, Microsoft Outlook Charity ‘SharePoint’ had a ‘Teams’ function’, enabling virtual meetings and on line document sharing, that enabled our club to respond immediately to Government required ‘social distancing’ with which the club has strictly complied to keep our members and the community safe.

Much of the club revenue was gone. Costs had to be frozen to protect the club’s assets. The club is grateful to its dedicated supporters in co-operating in this regard. The Barefoot Café, despite material loss of business, continued to pay an important part of its rent, and the club cleaners, despite its contract with the club, readily accepted the suspension of its services.

The club’s management structure, including its well-balanced appropriately qualified and experienced board under the seasoned leadership of its president, its voluntary method of operation and the corporate, cooperative and concerned membership enabled the club to respond to the crisis quickly and effectively.

Quick action to preserve the club’s strong financial position ensures that there is a solid base to resume operations as normal when the crisis is over which we all hope will be in time for the commencement of the next season.

The 2019/20 year has been like no other year for the club however we leave it ready and able to take up where we were when the crisis burst upon us. This confidence is supported by the new sponsorship taken on during the ‘lock down’ by Balanced Building operated by member James Lewry.

David White - Director of Administration

Along with most sporting clubs and businesses in Australia the club’s accounts for the year ended April 30th 2020 were very heavily impacted by COVID 19 and the bushfires. This meant that, for the first time in many years, the club posted a loss of $22,128.00 for the year. This compared to an operating profit of $68,492 for the 2018/19 year.

Income totalled $356,671 which is a 18.8% decrease from the 2018/19 result of $439,056. Bar Sales continue to be the largest contributor to the income figure at $158,564 or 44.5% of income. This compared with a figure of $195,928 or 44.6% income in 2018/19.

Bar expenses of $80,714 ($95,517 in 2019) are the largest single expense item. Bar sales contributed $77,850 to the gross income of the club. Once again, this result would not have been achieved without the excellent efforts of Steve O’Hara, Carole Thompson and the volunteer bar staff. Donation income

was $38,000 for the 2019/20 year, compared with $50,944 for 2018/19 - a decline of 25%,

A very pleasing feature for the year was the increase in membership income from $36,054 in 2018/19 to $43,904 in 2019/20 an increase of 21.8%. This indicates that the club continues to have excellent community support within the MacMasters Beach area.

With Covid-19 restrictions being introduced in mid-March, income from the bar, yoga and other hall income streams ceased. This resulted in a loss of revenue of approximately $50.000 and severely impacted on the clubs operating result for the year.

The budgeted operating profit for the year was $35,400. Although the club had an operating net loss of $22,128 for the year cash flow for the year was positive $40,385 after expending $17,379 on capital equipment. Our bank balance for the year end had increased to $234,482 from $194,097.

In summary, an extremely difficult financial year for the club to navigate. However, with strong action by the board and tight financial controls I believe the club remains in a strong financial position to re-bound to a positive profit position in 2020/21 once Covid -19 restrictions are lifted.

A very big thank you to the club bookkeeper Steve Sillato for his continued diligence and commitment to the role and Denise Sherring for her efficiency, competency and all-round support. I would also like to thank all volunteers who have contributed in some way to smooth running of the finance area of the club.

2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Surf NSW strongly promotes “online learning” as a means of reducing the workload on training teams. Our very small group of trainers, content experts and assessors have continued to adopt face to face and practical base competency training. “Show me your skills, get into the water and understand the conditions that you will be patrolling under”. This is the Macs approach. It generates self-confidence within our surf patrols and allows ongoing training under the guidance of senior patrolling members. It makes sense. However, our training approach is under threat with compulsory “portal membership” and online upgrade training now being adopted.

The season commenced with the induction and group meeting of all boaties, completing their dry land proficiencies including resuscitation, signals and radio. Many thanks to Brad Norman and his team.

The nippers assembled with the training team completing a club induction for the under six nippers and parents, then a part season of teaching surf skills and resuscitation for all age groups. The sight of our young nippers on the lawn completing resuscitation with defibrillators in a hectic fifteen-minute session, certainly had plenty of bystanders smiling. Our age managers and parents must be praised for the role they play in early surf education.

Skill deficiency in patrols was recognised early with Rod Jordan educating a large group of boaties through Advanced Resuscitation. Spinal Management was further developed within the Bronze Award requiring compulsory training within the proficiency requalification sessions.

The skill developed through our nipper program enabled a very easy transition into awards, especially the Surf Rescue Certificate where approved content experts or delegates assisted in the training during regular patrols. The early Bronze Awards were also dominated by young people coming through our system.

It is very pleasing to note the new senior members joining our club. The club promotes a “role for everybody” whether on patrol or behind the bar. Senior members maintain the strength within our patrols. The IRB team of Michael Morrison, Warren Watkins, Matt Staples and content experts Geoff Dominguez and Greg Ferguson again showed dedication to turn up each Sunday morning for training and nipper water safety. The club is short on IRB drivers and crew. Interested members are encouraged to engage this team in the important task of operating these vessels.

Updates to patrol captains, paperwork assistance and award

documentation was completed this year by Lyn Drummond greatly reducing the workload on trainers and assessors. As the patrol season suddenly concluded early, many members are still waiting or about to commence awards, especially the Bronze, with Trent’s large team of competitors requiring Bronze to begin the 2020/21 season.

The online component format will be ready to go by August, needing compulsory completion and monitoring plus assessment, and requiring additional members on the training team. This will suit some people, and allow the face to face trainers to complete their practical sessions in conjunction with the online trainers, engaging more people within our training team, which will benefit the Club moving forward.

2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A successful if somewhat strange season on the beach with patrols being cancelled for the year in March due to Covid-19 issues. It definitely felt strange seeing the beach on a weekend with people in the water and no flags raised. Fortunately, even with increased numbers due to people “isolating” around the area, there were no major injuries or deaths.

Thank you to the Patrol Captains for their support and work this year, Graham Johnston, Warren Watkins, Jim Myers, Michael Bambridge, Bruce Staples, Matt Ryan, Vince Roberts, Andrew Duck, Bill Queripel, Hamish MacPherson, Brad Norman and Alan Blackman, professionally leading their patrols to deliver a high standard of beach management and safety to the local community and our visitors.

Well done to all our members, young and not so young, for using of the “What’s App” group for patrol subs this year. It has proved very successful.

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

Thank you everyone for another wonderful but different season. We started really well with patrols and nippers, then endured crazy surf, bushfires, heatwaves and then coronavirus (Covid 19) that cancelled everything as we went into lockdown. Well done one and all on your efforts and support for the club through these crazy times.

Our nipper numbers increased this season which called for more parents to step up and become Age Managers to keep our ratios compliant. The nippers all loved the usual Sunday morning activities making use of our Lily Pad mat when the surf was suitable. It was a really busy season with many carnivals, our Twilight Christmas Nippers and a few weekends when the beach was closed. Luckily the Nipper season finished just before the Covid 19 restrictions came into force, so the only change was that we had to cancel Junior Presentation. Thank you everyone for your help with nippers, the bbq and other fundraising raffles.

The Rookies (13s and 14s) started patrolling this season and enjoyed time at Aqua Splash and helping the younger nippers. We really hope they continue to patrol and be in integral part of the club. Thank you to Suzie Morris and Melissa Hackshall for organising the Rookies so well. I need to thank Anna McCall for her time as Age Manager for this group for the last few years. Bridget O’Donoghue (a previous Macs nipper herself) worked with Anna, then continued as the U14 Age Manager for this season. Thank you, Bridget, for all your help and all the best for the future.

Our Cadet members continued competing led by their chief – Jason Vella and coordinated by Shannan Williamson. This group have been strong their whole way through nippers and are still together having fun and competing.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award was very difficult to run this season due to all the environmental factors but our members continue to volunteer on patrols, learn new skills and complete physical activities even if the camps have not really happened. See Geoff’s report for more information.

The Macs Masters and Boat Crews grew in number and continued to do well in the competition area. Both groups, together with the Cadets, were to compete in the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast in April but this was all cancelled due to coronavirus. Some of our Masters competitors were even going on to the World Titles in Italy. Macs Maniacs has started with social distancing and continues through until Fathers’ Day.

Our patrol members, bar staff, first aiders, officials, water safety, Point Break editors, house manager, bar manager, maintenance and repair crews, website support, Directors – there are so many roles and luckily, we have so many amazing members who step up to fulfil them. However, so many of these people no longer have nippers in the club but still volunteer their time as we don’t have a lot of new, younger members joining in. We don’t know how the next season will look yet due to coronavirus, but please consider stepping up and helping us to keep MacMasters Beach Surf Club the great place that it is.

Lastly, it is with sadness that we say thank you and farewell to our Managers of Sunday Activities – our Nipper Co-ordinators – Elaine Hodgkinson and Lorna Walters. These two women have led nippers for the last few years, my whole Directorship so far, and I really don’t know how we’ll do it all without them. Many other clubs on the coast have copied the Macs model Elaine & Lorna set up for our nippers. Thank you to you both and enjoy relaxing on Sunday mornings at home!

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

Once again, the sun sets on a hot but shortened and very weird end to our 2019/2020 season due to COVID 19. There was a very pleasing start to the shortened season with our U8s, new to the competition scene, having a healthy regular eight to ten competitors who experienced a taste of carnivals achieving a podium position at Branch. Branch was a fantastic result for our small club with 56 Nippers giving their all and achieving a vast array of medals across the field with the U13 dominating yet again and repeating past seasons results. Nice to see a gold in the U14 signals to Judah White.

In the Opens, Masters was a massive result with medals too numerous to mention and which are detailed in the results table below.

Branch Boats were delayed and eventually, due to COVID, shutdown. This was a shame as I think we were primed for some good results.

NSW State carnivals were held for all and results for Nippers, Opens, Masters and Boats shown below.

Preparations for the Aussies were progressing nicely but, sadly, were also cancelled for COVID.

Nippers. A total of twenty competitors made the trek to Swansea Belmont. A gold for Hamish Taylor-Martin in the board. Two bronzes for the U13 girls board rescue to Airley Arnold & Skye Hackshall and the U14 boys, in their final carnival in nipper life, to Marcus Aitchison, Patrick Sheppard and Calum Walters. This is a great result for these boys who have never given up over the years.

Opens. Jason Vella continues to do great things with this group grooming them from Nippers to Opens. A small squad ventured to State to compete against some experienced talent. Great result for Macs was a 4th in final of the Female Board Race for Sinaed Williams capping off a great year for her.

Masters. The Masters continued with their great season backing up and building on their previous season. Results were achieved all over the beach, which can be seen in the below table. Great work team, and looking forward to next season.

Interbranch. Congratulations to the U13 Marlins Skye Hackshall, Bree Josling, Hamish Taylor-Martin & Jerome Drobot on their selection in the Central Coast Interbranch rep team.

Boats. Congratulations to 4 of our Macs Boat Crews who have were selected in the 2020 NSW Surf Boat Interbranch Championships which were held at Queenscliff SLSC on Sunday 19 January 2020. Of the eight boat crews in the Interbranch team four were from Macs.

Director of Competition Craig Lee

Australian Championships. Unfortunately, due to the Government imposition of ‘social distancing’ in response to the Covid 19 pandemic, the Australian Championships were cancelled.

The end of the road.... This is my last report as Director of Competition for MacMasters Beach SLSC. After the last 8 years, it’s time to pass the baton on to someone else to keep the organisation moving forward. Kylie Dickinson has stepped into the role. I cannot think of anyone better equipped to take this on. I wish Kylie all the best in the role and look forward to her taking it to the next level with new ideas with all her years of experience around the club. I’ve had an amazing 8 years in the role, made some great friends and importantly to me, I’ve seen a bunch of great kids turn into adults along the way. I want to thank every person out there who has made some contribution to the club and assisted me over the last 8 years. I would like to mention former directors, Vince Roberts and Simon Cusack and thank them for their guidance in my early years when I first came onboard. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for their unwavering support and enthusiasm throughout the past season. See you on the beach.

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

What a season 2019/20 turned out to be. Between bush fires, smoke-filled days and an unusable beach due to storms and high seas, we can count ourselves lucky to have made it to the end of the season and State Titles. We were all disappointed of course that the Junior Presentation was unable to be held due to lockdown.

As we finish up our time as the Nipper Coordinators, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in Sunday morning nippers. There are too many people to mention individually and apologies if we leave out anyone. Firstly, to our wonderful age managers who come to the beach every week and encourage kids to have a go. Whether it is taking part in an event in the water, being part of a team or learning something new about the ocean or first aid, the Age Managers are always helpful, respectful and encouraging. This year we said goodbye to Bridget O’Donoghue and her wonderful U14s. We hope to see the kid back for U15s or as patrolling members of the surf club. Thanks Bridget, for all your help and encouragement over the last few years. Thank you also to Anna McCall who was Age Manager with Bridget until this year and who did a wonderful job.

To run nippers, we rely heavily on a lot of people who may not even have kids in nippers anymore. Thanks must go to Amanda Queripel for another great year running the uniform shop as well as helping at carnivals as an official. To Trent Martin, Jan Sillato, Greg Ferguson and Jonno for running the board, swim and first aid portions of nippers. Without our wonderful water safety team including Leigh, Frank, Simon and Grant, as well as all the cadets and rookies, we would not be able to proceed - so thank you.

Huge thanks to Lynda and Jim Gundry for organising the BBQ and thank you to the parents, rostered or not, who have taken up the tongs to prepare the finest sausage sizzle on the coast. The BBQ is a great fundraiser for nippers and thanks to all those who have supported it.

Other volunteers include Paula Vella and Denise Sherring, the Rookie Coordinators Suzie Morris & Melissa Hackshall, Carnival Organiser Suzanne Petrie, our officials Tracy, Hayley, Mel, Cherie, Frank, and everyone else who helped make our Nippers the best it could be.

As we head into a new and possibly different era due to Covid19 we would encourage parents to step up and become more involved. Kids respond to seeing their parents so involved in the club; whether as a patrolling member, helping with water safety, helping the age managers -there are so many roles within the surf club so your participation can be small or large.

We thank parents for coming back with their kids every week, encouraging and helping them to develop their knowledge of life by the sea. Having seen our own children grow up through the surf club, we would both say it has been one of the best experiences for our kids.

State Weekend 6th-8th of March saw Sinaed place 4th in the Female Board Race and Marlee, Sinaed, Zoe and Chloe placed 6th in the Female Beach Relay.

A special thanks from all the U15 parents to their wonderful Age Manager Jason Vella. He has done an amazing job. His endless patience and encouragement has helped shape and mould these young people to achieve great things - even when some just wanted to be left alone and build sandcastles!!!!I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what becomes of the wonderful children of this group and keeping up with their amazing achievements. Good luck with all you do.

The crews had an incomplete Streets Series as well as the disappointment of cancelled Branch and Australian Titles. Despite this, all nine crews competed regularly during the season. The Cazadores, The Fat Dads, The Whippets and The Martinis represented Central Coast Branch at the Queenscliff Interbranch Titles in January.

At the State Titles in March, The Fat Dads, rowed brilliantly throughout the weekend to claim the Bronze medal in the Reserve Men division. We also had a strong performance in the Under 19 Men with The Whippets also having a great weekend of racing and claiming 4th place in the final.

Sponsorship

We can’t row if we don’t have good equipment and this only happens year after year because of the generosity of some very supportive sponsors: -

• A huge thank you to LooLoo from the Coffee Shack and Warehouse for the new set of oars.

• Thanks also to Kincumber Smash Repairs for painting the oars.

• Our gratitude to Mr Wilding for the donation of paint for the new boat trailer.

• Graham Elliss always gets a big nod for his fibreglass expertise –great work again.

All crews are always grateful to Sister Ellen and The Sisters of Saint Joseph for the continued use of the boatshed at South Kincumber. It’s a privilege that we don’t take for granted. Peter Norman - Boat Captain

2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT

The 2019/2020 season has certainly been a character-building one to remember!! Throughout, our Macs Masters have showed skill, strength, team spirit and resilience, backed the whole way by the greatest surf club on the Central Coast, MacMasters Beach SLSC.

Our masters crew competed well during the first half of the season, starting with a small group heading up to Forster for the October long weekend. As is often the case up there, it was a cold and miserable weekend, although competition was fun.

A much larger group turned up to our local Toowoon Bay Carnival in November and they all achieved some great results. At the end of the day, our “Macs Masters” took out 2nd place overall, thanks to everyone having a go at absolutely every event on offer. This is where Macs shows their strength, because our masters love to challenge themselves each and every time they turn up to a carnival. Results then flow through all day.

Some very challenging conditions met our masters at Terrigal in January, on another very cold and miserable day - not what you would expect in January!! There were many brave performances in our water events, with no injuries which is always a great result!!

The usual “Macs Masters” spent another awesome weekend up at Fingal Bay the following week and finally had some beautiful weather and conditions. Of course, competing is fun on this weekend away, but there are also plenty of fun times before, during and after the competition!!

The annual tribute to “Nutty” saw a small group attend the Nutty Masters carnival at Wamberal in February. Water quality was badly affected by the bush fires and floods which we saw during the months of January and February. And, we were back to cold and miserable conditions!! It didn’t stop our Macs crew though, doing their best in very trying conditions.

The Branch carnival for our Masters in February was postponed twice, then eventually cancelled, due to the continuing poor quality of our coastal beaches from the devastating bush fires and flooding up and down the NSW coastline. This also affected our training sessions, although we were able to utilise Cochran Lagoon on many occasions for some grueling flat-water paddling.

We were fortunate enough to grab a small window of better water quality and conditions in early March, which meant that our State carnival in Swansea did actually go ahead. A small group of 7 competitors were strong in all their events, with many of the team winning a State medal over the two days - for some, it was their very first State medal ever, which was very exciting.

Of course, this is where the season ended for our “Macs Masters”. A very early finish to what was planned to be a huge year competing at Aussies in Queensland and the Worlds Championships in Riccione, Italy later in 2020. Both events being cancelled due to the travel restrictions in place as a result of the worldwide pandemic.

“Macs Masters” have all had a chance to have a well-earned rest, and look forward to coming back stronger next season and keen to continue their zest for life on the beach and in the surf. We are always looking to inspire others within the club to join the club’s fun team of “mature” athletes. Keep a look out in the monthly newsletter Point Break, for information about training and just make a decision to have a go, develop your surf skills, work on your fitness, and generally be the best you can be for yourself and MacMasters Beach Surf Club.

MACMASTERS BEACH SLSC

This year I was lucky enough to be involved in organising the handicap swim and board. This is my favourite event and occurs every Sunday morning prior to nippers. I love this event is because it celebrates the essence of what MacMasters Surf Club is all about which is catering to all individuals allowing everyone to have a go involving all members from nippers, rookies, cadets and seniors.

This Sunday morning ritual allows all proficient club members to either swim, board or both and try to improve on their individual times. We start at 8.45am each week. I just love watching the senior members encouraging the younger children to take part, especially when the conditions are only occasionally flat. It’s truly wonderful to see senior club members swimming alongside our junior members with the weekly banter from senior members on how I need to handicap the younger children more or that the seniors can’t possibly be going at the same time as cadets.

I have watched this event grow in numbers becoming extremely popular due to the nipper coordinators and age managers encouraging and exposing the children to all the events that our club offers throughout our season.

I personally thank Jo Day for her assistance in time keeping and recording both this year and last year. I couldn’t have done this without her, due to the number of club members involved. This year we had about 30 people partake in the morning swim and about 15 for the board. During the season I have witnessed some amazing body surfing, skilful board riding and individuals swimming through sections of weed.

MacMasters Beach always provides various swell making this a wonderful and unique beach with our members learning how to navigate all surf conditions.

2019/2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Macs ManiacsThe Maniacs enjoyed another full season of exercise, swimming and fun. As usual we had our “Theme” days, some crazy outfits then finished the morning sharing coffee and some laughs. Our days included: Favourite sporting team; Inflatables; Icebergs; Wimbledon; Pink Day; Hot Toddy; Pirates; Vintage; and the popular Championship Day. The Championship Day was very competitive, and the champion tag eagerly sort after, sadly for some no gong was given.

The average water temperature was 20 degrees and nearly all Sunday mornings were sunny and magnificent. We managed a few jumps off the rocks and all either walked, jogged or ran towards north MacMasters.

Maniacs averaged a turn up of 30 swimmers in our 19th season which included a very successful fundraiser for the Cancer Council. A great effort of organising by Kylie Dickinson.

The MANIAC OF THE YEAR was Penny Roden. Penny made comment on the support she had from Jan Sillato, who held her hand to make the final swim.

Looking forward to 2020 our 20th year so look out for some special celebrations.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award for MacMasters Beach SLSC has had a disrupted year due to bushfires, COVID 19 and kids involved in other sport activities. However, we did run two camps: one in February and one in July (both bronze camps).

We had other scheduled trips to the Six-Foot Track in October 2019 cancelled due to limited response because of sporting and school commitments. There was a multi-day Bronze/Silver/Gold camp at Newnes, Blue Mountains which was cancelled due to bushfires. We also had a Silver/Gold camp in April which had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 regulations.

We started the Bronze camp in Mangrove Mountain where we hiked down to Dubbo Gully, including off-track hiking using maps and compass. We camped at Ten Mile Hollow overnight. The next morning, we hiked to the Buddhist Temple where we served the Monks breakfast and had a look around the Monastery. Then we hiked back via Simpson’s Track back to Mangrove shops for some much-needed ice cream. The four adult supervisors were Tracy Przybyla, Geoff Dominguez, Graeme Jones and Andrew Duck.

The next camp was another Bronze camp. We started at Patonga and kayaked up Patonga Creek, then hiked to Rocky Ponds where we had a swim and jumped off the waterfall. We returned back to Rocky Creek where we camped. The next morning, we paddled down Patonga Creek to Middle Head (opposite Lion Island) then went off-track bushwalking to find some Aboriginal carvings. We returned to Patonga where we met the parents. I would like to thank Rachel Poldy, Bridget O’Donoghue and Andrew Duck for supervising this camp.

After four years as House Manager Steve O’Hara has left his post with the position being taken up by long standing patrolling member Tony Hall. Steve passes to Tony a materially enhanced club house and one that all members are proud of. The extensive renovations performed during Steve’s tenure maximise the utility of the limited building area which, due to planning regulations, cannot be expanded. Additionally, the standard of the facility, including the ‘feature’ bar is the envy of the other clubs on the coast.

Steve has ensured that the spaces have been allocated and that the services and facilities required for the effective performance of the club’s essential surf lifesaving functions as well as the club’s social activities and the multiple community uses are there, of good quality and reliable at all times.

Consistently with the club’s approach to energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gasses the club last year installed the maximum available solar capacity and proposes the installation of optimal battery capacity to seek the maximum available energy self-sufficiency.

Very well done, congratulations and thank you Steve.

Anzac DayOur 2020 ANZAC Day Service was so different to what we have been used to. Although we could not gather due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus) health regulations and physical distancing, we still paused to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of those who have served our Nation.

As requested by the RSL, we joined the nation at 6.00am and played the Last Post, held a minute silence and played Reveille from the Club forecourt. The sound across the still bay was a haunting experience.

The ANZAC spirit and the poignancy of our memories and gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for us and generations to come remains alive and will continue for all time. Hopefully next year’s ANZAC Day Service will return to our normal 5.00pm Sunset Service.

Garden Social and Bridge ClubsThe club house has continued to be the home for the MacMasters Beach Ladies Social Club, Garden Club and Bridge Club. These clubs meet monthly at the club house and are an important valued part of the club’s manifestation as the centre of social activity at MacMasters Beach.

The members of these three clubs participate in and contribute to the club’s activities in all ways including materially in financial donations to the club as well as, and more importantly and consistently with the ‘volunteer psyche of the club, by volunteering time to support the conduct of various social activities at the club including the Christmas carols event each year.

CommunityThe essential purpose of the club is its surf life saving function. However, the club is the centre of the MacMasters Beach community used, enjoyed and supported by the whole of the MacMasters Beach and wider community. The annual Christmas Carols and Anzac Day events are attended by capacity crowds of all ages. Through the season the Bouddi Swing Band plays on Wednesday mornings is attended by a loyal and regular following, who purchase a coffee from the club sponsor the Barefoot Café.

Without our sponsors, donors and supporters along with the support and involvement of the community the club would not be able to operate as it does. The club extends its sincere thanks to all.
