Reflecting on the Lenten Season People o en don’t look forward to Lent. Childhood memories of giving up candy or si ng through weekly Sta ons of the Cross come immediately to mind. Words like “sacrifice,” “discipline,” and “self-denial” are o en used in ways that suggest that Lent is something to be endured rather than a me of grace and spiritual growth. Have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance? Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priori es are in line with God’s desires for us. Since most of us find that we’ve wandered from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance, or do-over, to “return to God with our whole heart.” We’re highligh ng Lenten prac ces and memories of people who have shared their stories with us. Their experiences range from pious and tradi onal to crea ve and out-of-the-ordinary, but all of them represent a empts to make the season of Lent a mean-ingful me of prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving for themselves, their loved ones, and their communi es. Invite family members to share their thoughts, hopes, and desires for Lent. Decide to support one another in whatever you choose to do. As you journey through this annual second chance, remember that each step brings you closer to the welcoming arms of our loving God. YOUR Favorite Lenten Prac ces From the breakfast table to the car seat, from wri ng to drawing, from giving something up to doing something more . . . Let the wisdom and spirit of these stories inspire you in your own Lenten journey. Around the breakfast table

One of my best Lenten prac ces was begun when my children were in elementary school and I was a working parent. It seemed as though we were struggling to find me to eat dinner as a family and this was greatly disturbing me. I decided that if we were unable to hold the dinner hour sacred due to work schedules and a er school ac vi es, I would instead hold the breakfast hour sacred. I made sure to get up each morning during Lent just a li le earlier so that I could not only provide breakfast for my family but actually sit together, pray our meal prayer and begin each day on a happy note. It be-gan in Lent and didn’t end un l my children went off to college many years later. I learned that Lenten habits could carry far off into the future with my family. The impact was drama c in that each day was started with a prayer and posi ve a -tudes. Breakfast became and remains one of our favorite rituals of the day. Roberta, IL

My Lenten jar I always have nice things that I’d like to do, but never seem to make me to get to: write a le er to a friend, visit a lonely person, call a distant friend. At the beginning of Lent, I write down 40 plus tasks, one per li le slip of paper, and toss them in a jar. Then, each morning of Lent, I pull one out and do the task wri en there. It teaches me that I like surprise and varie-ty in my Lenten prac ces. For me, this is a simple way to concentrate on the disciplines of giving alms and doing good for others. Mark G., KS

    Dialing into God

Instead of listening to music or talk radio in my car, I decided to take that me for prayer and to listen to God. At first, it was a difficult transi on; the silence was deafening. But soon, I began to enjoy the quiet me. I prayed for people who I knew needed my prayers. I prayed for my family and myself. I also thanked God for my many blessings. I found that I be-came much more calm and peaceful during this me. This reflec ve me grounded and centered me to do my best. Donna, NC

    A note a day

Each day of Lent, through prayer, a name surfaces of a person who has had an impact on my life in some way. I then take the me to write a handwri en note to that person. I have been amazed at the people that have surfaced: from my 3rd grade teacher; to a cousin; to a priest; to a high school student who had wri en me a note a er a presenta on I gave at her school. I send the notes without the expecta on of a response. Yet, I have received several emails and notes sta ng how much it meant to the person. Life is too short —we see that with Jesus—but, we have the opportunity to share our thoughts with those who have made an impact (some don’t even know it, un l they receive the note). This embodies the idea of Lent: prayer—praying for a specific person each day; fas ng—fas ng from nega ve thoughts; and almsgiving—sending a note with affirma ons is a great gi to give. “But now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 Dear Parishioners and Friends, We would like to express our most hear elt gra tude to You for your generosity in suppor ng the Divine Mercy School in Kenya. We are filled with joy, as we have witness goodness happening in many ways through the hands of the sisters and brothers of the Missionaries of the Poor (MOP) thanks to your abundant love and generous support over the years.

Thanks to YOU, 120 children from local slums in Chokaa, Nairobi a end to a brand-new school. Thanks to our parish and Your generosity we give not only educa on but change people’s mentality, we give them hope and faith for a be er and brighter tomorrow.

The Divine Mercy School is one of the best schools in the that area. A solid, spacious and func onal building, well-equipped classes, colorful walls, big windows. Now, with joy we can hear there children’s laughter. In this place, they feel loved and safe. Most of all, they are very proud that they can study in such amazing school.

The new kitchen and dining room was open last month. It is spacious where each child has a place to sit comfortably and eat a proper meal. Thanks to YOU, there is no more si ng on the ground or broken benches under the tent. In addi on, we bought new plates, cups and silverware. Kitchen is the heart of every home and so is also in our school.

The joy and the gra tude of the children, teachers and Brothers working in school cannot be described in words. We can constantly hear from them ASANTE SANA! ASANTE SANA! -THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

This week we start Lent. This is the 6th me when we are invi ng you to support our Children form Divine Mercy School, and as well our new project, PLAYGROUND, where we hope to give them a safe place to play. As you know 120 children in age 3-7 a end our school. All of them are from the local slums. Here, children who are o en neglected by their own parents, receive their educa on, receive school supplies and school

uniforms, as well as a warm meals and love from their teachers and the brothers. It was upli ing to see the fruits of the Chicago support in the school: new school supplies, new books, toys, shoes and school uniforms, and more nutri ous meals for children.

During all of the masses on Saturday and Sunday, March 16th and 17th, Fr. Paul from Kenya mission, together with the volunteers, will have a short presenta on of our experiences from the mission. During Lent, we will be se ng up “Trees of Hope.” Project through which you can support the Divine Mercy School in Kenya. The trees with envelopes will be set up at the back of the church. You will be able to return the envelopes with your dona on during the regular collec on or turn it to the parish office (please don’t hang up the envelopes with dona ons back on the tree). Your dona on of 20 dollars will allow the bothers to purchase the required uniform for a one child. The amount of $10 will guarantee shoes and a backpack. Yearly tui on for school is $30. Books and supplies are $20, and the

food program is $60 per year. The total cost of the school program for one year is $140 per child. Wholeheartedly, we invite you to support this project once again. Without your help we won’t be able to con nue this wonderful work.

The MOP brothers assure you of their constant prayers in your inten on. May God bless you abundantly for your generous support and love for the poor! For more informa on, please contact Marta at (847)312-6144 or Ania at (773) 936-2235. Fr. Jason Torba-pastor & MOP Chicago Support Team

POSTNY PROJEKT 2019 „Tak więc trwają wiara, nadzieja, miłość-te trzy: z nich zaś największa jest miłość.”

    (1 Kor 1-13)

Nowa kuchnia połączona z jadalnią została niedawno oddana do użytku.

Książki i przybory szkolne kosztują $20, a wyżywienie jednego dziecka rocznie wynosi $60. Całkowity koszt rocznego utrzymania dziecka w szkole to $140. Bardzo prosimy o ponowne wsparcie tego projektu, bez waszej pomocy nie będziemy w stanie kontynuować tego wspaniałego dzieła.

Bracia i siostry Misjonarze Ubogich zapewniają o modlitwie w Waszej intencji.

Wyjazd do Chicago ok godziny 13. Planowany powrót ok. północy. Całkowity koszt wycieczki $450. Kontakt: Sr. Agnieszka i ks. Lukasz (773) 622-5900 ext. 236

ON MAXIMS/ADAGES/APHORISMS Copyright 2018 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

Dic onary.com defines a maxim as “an expression of a general truth or principle.” I’ve always liked these things. They speak to me of poetry in that they tend to capture the essence of something with just a few words (poetry’s pithy that way). And because of their brevity, they are also easy to commit to memory. I’ve commi ed many to memory myself. You have, too. And probably without even knowing it. I Googled “popular maxims” just now and here are a few of the entries: “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,” “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” See what I mean? Thesaurus.com offers the following synonyms for maxim: “adage, aphorism, axiom, dictum, mo o, proverb…” The list goes on. I stop at “proverb,” though, because, the Bible has a pre y good book of them. In truth, it’s one of my favorite books in the Book, and for all of the reasons I’ve already men oned. “Be er a dry crust with peace than a house full of feas ng with strife” and “Hatred s rs up disputes, but love covers all offences” and “A man’s spirit sustains him in infirmity, but a broken spirit, who can bear?” All poe c/pithy/memorable. On a recent business trip, I had dinner at a li le Chinese place in Portland, OR. Per my fortune-cookie fortune, “A short pencil is usually be er than a long memory any day.” The Book of Proverbs wins. And perhaps because I’ve always liked maxims/adages/aphorisms, I’ve actually created a few of my own over the years. My children would call them dad-isms, I suppose, and I shared such

insight with Sarah and Paul over and over and over again as they grew up. My maxims/adages/aphorisms wouldn’t have made the cut for the Book of Proverbs--or even Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanack--but I don’t think they’re half bad. Things like, “Always be mindful of those who come a er you,” and “Give yourself a chance to succeed” and “Whatever you do, stay in the game.” I even came up with this one based on a nega ve experience I had at work several years ago: “Never trust a man with two first names.” It made sense at the me. All this maxim/adage/aphorism talk comes to mind today as I consider the readings. Look at Sirach: “When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear; so do one's faults when one speaks” and “Praise no one before he speaks, for it is then that people are tested.” Look at Paul [referencing (I think) Hosea]: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your s ng?” This is so poe c/pithy/memorable, it could be a song. Maybe it already is. And look at Jesus himself: "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?” and “A good tree does not bear ro en fruit, nor does a ro en tree bear good fruit.” Recalling Sirach, “The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had…” It’s on us to produce good fruit: in ourselves, and--by our love and example--in others. This is discipleship. And today, not tomorrow. As Poor Richard puts it, “Lost me is never found again.” Poe c/pithy/memorable.
