Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful communityservice with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civicresponsibility, and strengthen communities. Faculty choose a limited number of meaningfulpartnerships with the goal of providing students with different, but consistent off-campuslearning experiences. Through service learning, students-from kindergartners to collegestudents-usewhattheylearnintheclassroomtosolvereal-lifeproblems.Theynotonlylearnthepracticalapplicationsoftheirstudies,theybecomeactivelycontributingcitizensandcommunitymembersthroughtheservicetheyperform.

Therearemanydefinitionsofservicelearningintheliterature,eachonewithcommonelementsthat define how service is conducted in conjunction with course content. • MakesureyouareREGISTEREDasastudentinatleast1creditduringthesemesteryouwillbeworkingasaStudentScholar.
• Email the Director of Student Service Learning ([email protected]) the followinginformation:yourCSUNemail,studentID,semesterandclasstitle,yourprofessor’snameandemail.Wewill need this information toprovide your access to S4Database yourfacultyandstudentswillbeusingextensively.
• LogintoS4databaseusingyourCSUNemailandpasswordathttps://app.calstates4.com/csun
• Asastudentscholaryoumaybeassignedadifferentlogininformationlatertogiveyouadministrativeaccesstotheclass,butinorderforustoseeyouinthesystem,youneedtoenterS4atleastoncewithyourregularCSUNcredentials.

PossibleAdditionalOrganizationalRequirementsBackgroundChecks(NotRequiredbyAllOrganizations)Background checks (whichmay include fingerprinting) areoften required for service learningstudentswhocomeintocontactwithprotectedclassesofpeople,suchaschildren,personswithdisabilities,andpersonslivinginassistedlivingfacilities.Thedecisionofalearningsitetorequireabackgroundcheckdependsonthelearningsite’sinterpretationofthelawsorregulationsthatgovernit.Assuch,thedecisiontorequestabackgroundchecksfromservicelearningstudentsfallundertheorganization’sresponsibilities.Theuniversityplaysnoroleinthisdecision.Federalandstatelawsandregulationsgoverningbackgroundchecksareverystrictregardingtheprivacyofthepersonbeingreviewed.Mostlawsallowonlytheentityrequestingthebackgroundchecktohaveaccesstotheresults.Consequently,becausetheuniversityisnotresponsibleforrequesting thebackgroundcheck,no facultyor staffmemberwilleverbegiven thespecificresultsofastudent’sbackgroundcheck.All learningsitesareunderstrictguidelinestokeepbackgroundcheck informationprivateandcanhavetheir licenses revoked if theyviolate thisrightofprivacy.Thismeansthatifastudenttakestwoseparateservicelearningcourses,eachrequiringabackgroundcheck,theywillneedtosubmittotwobackgroundcheckssothattheresults canbesent separately toboth locations.Thisholds trueeven ifboth service learningcoursesaretakeninthesamesemester.Although it is the sole responsibilityof the learning site todeterminewhether abackgroundcheckisnecessary,thatdoesnotmeanthatthelearningsiteisalwaysresponsibleforpayingforthe process. If the learning site cannot cover the cost of the background check, then thisresponsibilityfallstothestudent,nottheuniversity.

• Studentsmustsubmitaseparateagreementforeachleaningsitetheyplantoworkwith.
• StudentswhoparticipateinaservicelearningassignmentwithoutsubmittingaStudentServiceLearningPlan&AgreementarenotcoveredundertheSAFECLIPcampusinsuranceprogramandcanbeheldliableforanydamagesincurredatthelearningsite.
• Minorsmustalsofilloutahardcopyofthisform,whichcanbeobtainedfromtheOfficeofCommunityEngagement.Thisphysicalcopymustbefilledoutandsignedbyboththestudentandtheirparent/guardian.

Pre-ServiceLearningEvaluation&Post-ServiceLearningEvaluationThe Pre-Service Learning Evaluations and Post-Service Learning Evaluations are designed tomeasurestudents'inclinationandparticipationinservicelearningclassesandthelikelinessofstudentstoparticipateasactivemembersintheircommunity.Theseevaluationsalsoimproveand enhance the service learning experience for future CSUN students. Both evaluations arerequiredatthediscretionoftheprofessor.Pre-Surveysareavailableacrossthefirst8weeksofthesemester.Post-Surveysareavailableacrossthelast8weeksofthesemester.
• Theseevaluationsaremeanttomeasureexperiencesbeforeandaftervolunteering.

• Trytoattendthesite,atleastforthefirstfewtimes,withaclasspartner;usethebuddysystemwhenpossible.
• Keepyourautomobileanon-attraction.Donot leaveitemsvisible inthecar's interior.Placevaluablearticlesinthetrunkpriortoarrivalatthelearningsite.
• Ifyoutakethebus,besuretoknowtherouteandcostofbusfare.
• In case of a breakdown or amix upwith transportation, carry enoughmoney for analternateridehome.
• Developacommunitysafetynetofresourcesinyourlearningsitearea.
• Gettoknowyourlearningsitesupervisoratthelearningsite.
• Familiarizeyourselfwithpeople,placesandthingsintheareathatcanbeofassistanceintimesof emergency (e.g. know the locationof phones, 24-hour stores, police station,etc.).
• Givethephonenumberoftheagencywhereyou'llbeservingtoaroommate,friend,orrelativebeforeleavingforyourlearningsite.
• Usecommonsenseandconductyourselfinaprofessionalmanneratalltimes.
• Everylearningsitehasitsownrules,policies,procedures,protocolandexpectationsforwhichyouareresponsible.Familiarizeyourselfwiththeworkingsofthelearningsite.Thiswillcontributetobothyoursuccessandyoursafety.

CreatingClosureattheLearningSiteHow can you best prepare yourself and individuals you have been working with for yourdeparture? Through Community Engagement, students experience the frustrations anddifficultiesaswellasthesuccessesandhopesofworkingwithdifferentpopulationsonashort-term(semester-long)basis.Closuresignifiestheendingofanexperienceandwillinvolveaperiodoftimemeanttoeffectivelyprepareparticipantsfortheconclusionofacommunityengagementpartnership.
• GiveanAdvancedNoticeofTwotoThreeWeeksBeforeyourServiceEndsIn anticipation of final visits to the learning site, you should inform the learning sitesupervisorand thosewithwhomyouhaveworked, thenumberofweeks leftof yourcommitment.Thisway,thelearningsitesupervisorwillbealertedtothelossofassistanceandthepersonsbeingservedwillhavetheopportunitytoemotionallyprepareforandexpress"Goodbyes."
• Plana“Ceremony”foryourFinalSessionPlanagatheringwithdrinksandsnacks.Thismaybeatimeforacknowledgment,sharingaccomplishments,providingcertificatesandawards,takingandsharingphotographsorcreatingabulletinboard,photoalbum,oranothermementotoreflectontheexperience.
• WriteLettersWrite a letter to the learning site and/or the person you served sharing how theexperiencechangedyou,whatyoulearned,andthelastingimpacttheservicehashadonyou. If you would like to continue communication after the semester, invite theindividual(s)youworkedwithtowriteback.
• GiveSmallGiftsasRemembrancesMakeaDVDofmusicpartylike,takeacameratothelastservicelearningvisitandtakepicturesofeachothertoexchange,giveabook(onethatyouhavereadtogetheroronethatyouthinkthepersonmightenjoy).Pleasedon’tspendlargeamountsofmoneyongifts.
• BehaviorstoAvoidWhenSaying"Goodbye"Emotionsmaysurfaceforyouandthepeopleyouhavebeenworkingwith.Itislikelythatthe people with whom you have worked have experienced losses and it is never anenjoyablepartofapartnership.However,leavingapartnershipwithoutsayinggoodbyewillleavebothyouandtheotherpersonfeelingunsettledandabandoned.Beawarethatyoumaybecome"romanticized"andmaybeinspiredtomakepromisestoperpetuatethatfeelingofgoodwill.However,youmustBEHONESTaboutendingtheexperience.Yourtimecommitmentisfinished,anditisappropriateforyoutosaygoodbye.Donotmakepromisesthatcannotbekept.
