Dear Fellow Rotarians of District 6820,
Rotary International President, Mark Daniel Maloney’s theme, Rotary Connects the World, asks Rotarians to strengthen Rotary by building on the connections that allow our 1.2 million talented, thoughtful, and generous Rotarians to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service.“(Rotary) allows us to connect with each other, in deep and meaningful ways, across our differences,” Maloney said. “It connects us to people we would never otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever could have known. It
connects us to our communities, to professional opportunities, and to the people who need our help.”
Maloney believes that “connection” is at the heart of the Rotary experience, and that in the coming year, “The fi rst emphasis is to grow Rotary — to grow our service, to grow the impact of our projects,” and importantly, “to grow our membership so that we can achieve more…” If you think about it, you will think of dozens of ways that we connect as Rotarians. Among those, and to strengthen our District 6820 clubs in the coming year, let’s connect in order to:
• Grow our clubs - With people that we know who would benefi t from being a Rotarian• Improve our clubs’ membership retention - by purposefully engaging with our new members to
welcome them and get them involved in Rotary service• Broaden our service impact – by partnering with other Rotary clubs, our Rotaract & Interact clubs
and other service organizations,• Serve internationally – By supporting and/or participating in our District’s mission work in Mexico• Fund our local and international projects - Through support of The Rotary Foundation. • And, (as always) have great fun, fellowship, and service with our clubs’ members
Please make use of this District 6820 Directory. We are fortunate that so many Rotarians volunteer for leadership positions within our district. Each person listed is willing, able and eager to share his or her knowledge, talent and time with you and your club for the benefi t of strengthening our clubs to do good in our connected world. Call on them. Call on me. Together, let’s strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World.
Yours in Rotary Service,
Mark FieldsDistrict Governor 2019-2020(601) 918-2704 mfi [email protected]
DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
R. I. PRESIDENT MARK DANIEL MALONEYPRESIDENT 2019-20ROTARY CLUB OF DECATUR, ALABAMAUNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Rotary is built on connection. When Paul Harris came to Chicago as a young lawyer, he formed Rotary for one compelling reason: to help him connect to others in a new city. More than a century later, we have at our disposal countless ways to form friendships and networks, most of which Paul Harris never dreamed. Yet Rotary’s ability to connect us remains unique — and unrivaled.
Through its distinct mission and structure, Rotary International provides a way to connect to our communities, to network professionally, and to build strong and lasting relationships. Our membership connects us to a global community through our countless projects and programs, our leadership in polio eradication, and our work with and through the United Nations. Our service connects us to people who share our values, who want to take action for a better world; it connects us to people we would never otherwise meet, who are more like us than we could have imagined; and it connects us to people who need our help, allowing us to change lives in communities around the world.
As a new decade begins, we are shaping Rotary’s future. In 2019-2020, Rotary will implement its new strategic plan, respond to the innovation of the Council on Legislation, and serve in our revitalized areas of focus. But the real work of shaping Rotary’s future lies in our clubs, where our organization must do the most to adapt to today’s changing realities.
While the club remains the core of the Rotary experience, we are now far more creative and fl exible in deciding what a club can be, how it can meet, and even what can be considered a Rotary meeting. We need to be organized, strategic, and innovative in how we approach membership, forging wider and deeper connections to our communities and forming new club models to attract and engage more — and more diverse — members.
Rotary is indeed a family. Yet too often, the structure of membership or the demands of leadership seem to place Rotary out of reach for today’s younger professionals. Rotary can and should be an experience that complements our families instead of competing with them. When our Rotary clubs are warm, welcoming places where service and family go hand in hand, we give family-oriented young professionals the opportunity to embrace Rotary service and model positive civic engagement. And when we make the expectations of Rotary offi ces realistic and manageable for busy professionals, we develop the skills and networks of a new generation of Rotarians — who will become Rotary leaders.
In 2019-2020, it will be our challenge to strengthen the many ways that Rotary Connects the World, building the connections that allow talented, thoughtful, and generous people to unite and take meaningful action through Rotary service.

Paul P. Harris (1868-1947) was the founder of Rotary, the world’s fi rst and most international service club. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on April 19, 1868. Paul married Jean Thomson Harris (1881-1963). They had no children. He received the bachelor of physical culture and LL.B degrees from the University of Vermont and the LL.D degree from the University of Iowa. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 1933.
Paul worked as a newspaper reporter, a business teacher, stock company actor, and a cowboy. In 1896, he went to Chicago to practice law. In 1900 during an after-dinner stroll with a professional friend in a residential Chicago neighborhood, Paul was impressed by the fact that his friend stopped at several stores and shops in the neighborhood and introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores. This reminded Paul of his New England village and it occurred to him: “Why not have a fellowship composed of businessmen from different occupations, without restriction of politics or religion?” He resolved to organize a club that would band together a group of representative business and professional men in friendship and fellowship.
In February 1905, Paul Harris formed the fi rst club with three of his law clients - Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer, and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Because the group’s meeting locations rotated from one member’s place of business to the next, Harris christened his new club “Rotary.”
The second Rotary club was founded in San Francisco in 1908. In August 1910, when there were 16 clubs, the National Association of Rotary Clubs was organized. By 1921, the organization was represented on every continent, and in 1922, they adopted the name Rotary International. Paul Harris’ dream, the Rotary Club, has continued to grow and expand over the years. The burgeoning movement in Asia, and the over 220 clubs in Eastern Europe, are extending Paul Harris’s ideals of friendship, community service, education, and peace across the world.

2019-2020 DISTRICT 6820 GOALS
Membership - Each club, with the support of the District, should set a membership goal high enough to support the club’s projects in a manner that will make the club proud of its charter. For the District, in total, our goal is a gross membership gain of 10% with an intentional reduction in membership losses. We will add at least 3 new clubs or satellite clubs throughout the District. We will strive to have clubs whose diversity (age, sex, ethnicity, religion, etc.) refl ects that of the communities’ population of qualifi ed Rotary candidates.
Rotary Foundation - The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary that allows Rotarians all over the world to do projects that are life changing. We strive to increase awareness and understanding of The Rotary Foundation throughout the District. It is the goal of the District, with the support of each club, to “leave the wood pile a little larger than it was when we started”. We will specifi cally seek to add 10 new Paul Harris Society members and 4 Major Donors. We will work to increase Paul Harris Fellowships (whether single or multiple) by 15%, EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) by 10% and attain a minimum collective donation throughout the District of $115 Total Giving per member. We will strive to involve all clubs (Rotary, Interact & Rotaract) in a District-wide raffl e, with proceeds used primarily for our club projects.
Rotary Citation - The District leadership will encourage and support every club to achieve the Rotary Citation. The citation award evidences club excellence.
New Generations - As a District, we will seek clubs to sponsor at least 4 new Interact or Rotaract clubs. We will ask Rotary clubs to verify and re-certify Interact or Rotaract clubs. We will encourage clubs to involve Interactors and Rotaractors in club projects and events and, specifi cally, use these occasions as opportunities for mentorship. We encourage each club to sponsor at least one participant to attend the District 6820 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp (budget $325/participant).
End Polio Now Campaign – Polio Plus remains Rotary’s fl agship charitable undertaking. All Rotarians stand proud with our successes, and we should equally stand proud to support the efforts of Polio Plus. Each club is requested to hold a fundraiser and public awareness event to raise $1,500 or more to support Polio Plus. The District will promote and celebrate World Polio Day and will encourage all clubs to
2019-2020Rotary District 6820 Directory www.rotary6820.org30
participate.
Club Public Image – Throughout the District we seek to strengthen Rotary’s image, which improves our clubs’ relationships with their communities and attracts prospective members. We will educate and encourage clubs to:
• Assign a Public Image Chair and form a Public Image committee.• Use Rotary’s newest brand guidelines, templates and other resources in all
communications.• Regularly update club websites and social media accounts, showcasing club
activities and Rotary stories. And, use these platforms to showcase Rotary’s impact both locally and globally.
• Regularly invite local media to attend club meetings and events.• Promote projects on local talk shows and other media outlets.• Pursue “Public Service Announcement” opportunities.
Have fun, be proud to be a Rotarian- Being a Rotarian is an opportunity to fellowship, share common goals and address humanitarian needs achievable relative to our level of prosperity and desire to do good in the world.

*Deceased. Until 1956, the State of MS was divided into two parts. The southern part was in the District with Louisiana to the south and west and the northern part was in the District with Tennessee to the north. Past District Governors from current District 6820 who served the District in the north (6800), or the District in the south and west (6840) are also listed. On July 1, 1956, the current boundaries of District 6820 were established and we have had our own District Governors since that time.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
