He warned them to be careful near glaciers. Enormous chunks of ice often split off and landed in the water. “They are as dangerous as they are beautiful.”

On the final day of the trip, as the family paddled past a glacier, a huge chunk of ice broke off of its side and fell into the sea with a thunderous crash. The kayakers were far enough away not to be flipped over by its wake, but it still made the boats bob up and down like rubber ducks in a bathtub.

Two Hundred Tries

1 Rosa kicked the skateboard with such force, it skipped across the garage like a flat stone across water. Her idea for an invention was a failure. She’d wanted to make a skateboard with wheels arranged in a single row, so that the rider could tilt from side to side on it. Instead, she’d ended up with a mess.

2 Rosa had been working on her invention for about two weeks. First, she had persuaded her sister Paz to give her a skateboard that she rarely used anymore. Then Rosa took off the “trucks” that held the wheels, so she would be able to add wheels arranged in a straight row. Next, after a lot of searching, she found an ancient pair of inline skates—the ones with the wheels lined up just the way she wanted them.

3 The wheels of the skates were mounted in a frame, and she planned to take the frame off of one skate and attach it to her board. Rosa thought this would be simple, but it was much more difficult than it appeared. As she tightened the first screw to secure the frame to the board, she heard a cracking sound. She stopped and removed the screw before splitting the board completely. Next, she tried strapping the wheels on with duct tape; and that, to put it simply, did not work out well. Each time she tested the board, it would fall over before she had gone two feet. Then the wheels would slide sideways, and she’d have to tape them in place again.

4 “I quit!” Rosa yelled, glaring at the skateboard.

5 “Hey, what’s all the shouting about?” Dad asked as he stepped into the garage.

6 “I don’t know why I thought I could ever invent something because clearly I can’t,” Rosa replied.

7 “Have you ever heard of the Wright brothers?” asked Dad.

8 “Aren’t they the ones who invented the airplane?” answered Rosa, a little confused.

9 “They are,” said Dad, “and guess how many unusual designs they tried for the wings of their plane?”

10 “I don’t know. Twenty?” offered Rosa.

11 “No, they tried more than two hundred designs before they found one that worked. How many skateboard designs have you tried?”

12 “One,” Rosa murmured.

13 Dad continued, “The Wright brothers started with an idea, but that first idea didn’t work very well. In fact, when the Wright brothers tested out their designs, they brought spare parts with them because they knew their ideas wouldn’t work perfectly the first time. So, are you still ready to give up?” Dad asked.

14 Rosa sighed, “This invention process can be pretty disappointing, Dad.”

15 “Maybe you should try another approach,” Dad suggested. “And if that doesn’t work try a third thing, and a fourth. I’ll bet you eventually find something that works.”

16 Rosa thought about what else she could do. Maybe she could use some kind of glue. Her science teacher had

just explained how glue was used to attach heat tiles to the space shuttle. If there are glues strong enough to do that, she should be able to find one that would hold on a few wheels. “Dad, I think you’re right,” she said with the beginning of a grin. “I’ll try something else.”

Kayaking Alaska

1 “I wish we were going to Sci-Fi Land,” thought Julio as his fingers flew across the video game controls. The California theme park had been the vacation spot of his dreams. On one of the rides, an army of hologram robots actually chases you! But Mom and Dad had decided that the family would go kayaking in Alaska so Julio and his sister, Melinda, could experience the wonders of nature.

2 Two days later, the family arrived in a village on Prince William Sound. There they headed out to pick up kayaks, food, and gear. The guide waiting for them helped them strap on life jackets and pack their boats.

3 At first, “We’re going to have a great time, but a great time means a safe time too,” the guide said. He warned them to be careful near glaciers. Enormous chunks of ice often split off and landed in the water. “They are as dangerous as they are beautiful. The waves created by those monsters can swamp a boat, so don’t get any closer to the glaciers than I do,” the knowledgeable young man explained.

4 “Great,” said Julio darkly. “We’ll be seeing Alaska from the bottom of the ocean!” He looked at the gear piled in the kayaks and then at the icy water in front of them.

5 The guide laughed. “Don’t worry—we won’t bite off more than we can chew. Just stay close to me, and you’ll be fine.”

6 Julio and Mom climbed into one kayak and Melinda and Dad into another. The guide slipped into his own boat and led the family out onto the water. “Here we go!” said Melinda as she and Dad glided off after him. Julio sighed and paddled slowly behind them.

7 That first day, the family saw a black bear and her two cubs walking along the edge of the water. When the mother bear caught the scent of the kayakers, she reared up on her hind legs. Even at that distance, she was grand but fearsome. The rest of the family got a kick out of the experience, but Julio found himself paddling away as fast as he could.

8 On the second day, the family was soaked by the spray of a humpback whale that rose out of the water not 20 yards away. “Wow! That’s as thrilling as a theme park ride, don’t you think?” Melinda called out to Julio.

9 Julio looked at her with a nervous smile. He glanced around hesitantly to see what else might arise suddenly from the water, though for the moment at least, nothing did

10 On the final day of the trip, as the family paddled past a glacier, a huge chunk of ice broke off of its side and fell into the sea with a thunderous crash. The kayakers were far enough away not to be flipped over by its wake, but it still made the boats bob up and down like rubber ducks in a bathtub.

11 “Whoa!” cried Julio as he and Mom rode the waves. “It’s like a roller coaster!”

12 “Told you!” called Melinda from her kayak, steadying her camera to take his picture. This time he smiled fully.

13 “I guess you were right,” Julio replied as he looked at the beauty around him. “Nature is a pretty cool theme park after all.”
