Dear Friends,

Looking back over my seventeen years in Harrisburg, to serve this orchestra was easily the highlight of my professional career. I was lucky to come to Harrisburg when I did, early in Stuart’s tenure as Music Director. I can tell you from firsthand experience, having heard the HSO perform over 500 times (!), we have a magnificent professional orchestra right here in Harrisburg, one which has endured for 90 years!

I am a firm believer in the symphony orchestra as one of the great creations of our civilization and the anchor institution in the cultural life of any community. While musical styles and fashions come and go, the past 300+ years of music written for the orchestra provide, similar to the parallel worlds of literature and art, a virtually bottomless well of inspired and enduring masterpieces, an essential antidote to today’s noisy and chaotic world. Long live the orchestra!

Our orchestra would not be what it is today without you, our symphony family of donors. Your unwavering support has allowed us to continue to grow and flourish and reach more people of all ages each year. For 90 years our Symphony Family has supported the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making what we do possible.

As of this writing (late July), I’m almost a month into retirement and my successor, Matthew Herren, has settled in as the orchestra’s new Executive Director. Matt is fortunate that between Stuart, the Board, his fellow staff members and the musicians, he is surrounded by a gifted team that will work together to continue to bring you music during this unusual time. In addition, he will have your support, which is vital. The 2020-2021 season, whatever shape it takes, will be innovative, different, and exciting, truly A Season Like No Other.

Sincerely,

Jeff Woodruff

Matthew HerrenExecutive Director

Dear Friends,

It’s so good to be home!

I grew up in Lancaster, PA, and graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1989. My cello studies began in Lancaster public schools and eventually took me to Philadelphia and New York, where I received two degrees in performance from The Juilliard School. During my time at Juilliard, I became a regular Harrisburg Symphony player under Richard Westerfield and I hold fond memories of exciting concerts for enthusiastic audiences at the Forum. Now, it is my honor to join the superb HSO staff.

I have been fortunate to enjoy a career in classical music as performer, teacher, and administrator. I was Operations Manager of the Helicon Foundation (a chamber music series) in New York for six seasons, and toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe as a member of The New York Chamber Soloists and Trio Fedele. In the world of popular music, I have performed with Metallica, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Vanessa Williams and Star Wars in Concert. I have also held teaching positions at Pittsburgh State University (KS) and Cottey College (MO), as well as serving as an officer of The Lawrence, Kansas Cultural Arts Commission. In 2014, I left the stage to become Executive Director of The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA). During my time there I led a period of financial growth and expanding partnerships with key regional institutions to reach an audience of 20,000 annually.

Bringing audiences and performers together for meaningful experiences has been incredibly fulfilling to me and I am eager to begin working with the artistic team of Stuart Malina and the exceptional musicians of the HSO. For over ninety years, the HSO has brought performances to people of all ages throughout Central Pennsylvania in a variety of settings, which has enriched lives, contributed to the local economy, and kept the musical art alive.

Your continued support is a clear expression of strength and resolve, as this report shows. Together, we can ensure a vital artistic future for the community we love. Although these days are unusual for us all, I know you share my beliefs that humans seek human contact, that art serves to explain the unexplainable, and that soon we will be together again.

I look forward to meeting you and making musical memories together.

Sincerely,

Matthew Herren

What a crazy time we are living in!

Entering last season, I was filled with great excitement and great optimism. 2019-2020 marked my 20th season with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the 90th anniversary of the orchestra’s founding, and the 30th of our beloved Symphony Society. We had wonderful programs planned for the whole year, culminating in an enormous community celebration – Music in the Key of We. All systems were go for a magnificent season of music making.

Needless to say, the season, along with just about everything else in the world, took an abrupt turn in March. It was heartbreaking canceling the last few months of our concerts, watching the dates pass from the safety and solitude of our homes.

And yet, I still look back at last season as a success – indeed, one filled with some of my most satisfying musical experiences since I came to Harrisburg in 2000. From the overwhelming emotional high of premiering my son’s Suite for Orchestra, to our forays into multi-media with Enginity and The Planets; from our magnificent semi-staged concert performances of South Pacific and Porgy and Bess to singing and dancing the part of the King in The King & I opposite the incredible Lisa Vroman; from Capathia Jenkins singing Aretha to Michael Cavanaugh singing Billy; it was a year of memorable highs for me, our orchestra, and our audience.

None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our patrons and sponsors. I have said many times how fortunate I am to be the music director of an orchestra with such strong financial support. Perhaps the greatest success of last season was the fact that despite the upheaval in the Spring, our patrons kept on giving. Our annual fund exceeded its goal, our corporate and foundation sponsors kept supporting, and the number of audience members who donated their canceled tickets was truly heart-warming. It is crystal clear that our community loves its symphony, and boy, do we ever love you back!

And so, it is with no less excitement and optimism that I head into the 2020-2021 season – A Season Like No Other. Yes, it will feel different. But I and the entire HSO organization are laser-focused on finding ways within the current situation to continue doing what we do best – bringing you stirring, moving and memorable concerts. It is with a heart full of joy that I just signed a contract extension with the HSO. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together over the last 20 years, and I’m very excited to see what the future has in store.

With deepest affection and gratitude –

Stuart Malina

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your support of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

As you no doubt know, ticket sales cover only about one-third of the expenses of the Symphony. It is the gifts from people like you that allow the Orchestra to flourish. Without your generous gifts, our musicians could not play the music you love. If you were not prepared to help us materially, Maestro Stuart Malina would not be able to assemble the programs and the performances you look forward to seeing each season in the Forum.

People have told me how gratified they are to be able to support the Symphony because of the important place it occupies in their lives. One patron said to me, “whatever else is going on for me personally, good or bad, everything is fine as soon as Stuart Malina walks out on that stage!” And another patron told me: “Symphonic music is my sanctuary–my safe and holy place. I would do anything to protect it.”

In these uncertain and unprecedented times, I believe all of us feel it particularly important to secure the legacy and to protect the future of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. I’m confident we’ll be able to do this. We have a company of exceptionally talented musicians. We have a brilliant conductor. We have a devoted, hard-working, and effective staff. We have a dedicated Board of Directors. And we have patrons, like you, who–year after year–support this Orchestra with extraordinary generosity.

Again, thank you very much.

Dear Patrons of the HSO,

My name is Marjorie Goldberg and I have been a proud member of the viola section for almost 30 years! I can honestly say that my children have grown up coming out to Harrisburg with me and my husband, cellist Jonathan Fink (long-time substitute and proud member of HSO since 2003).

As freelance musicians we have always cobbled together a living by playing in many groups and playing many different types of jobs. Most free-lance musicians with families need to have other sources of income to be able to provide for their families. I have always taught both private students and some university classes and my husband is a real estate agent. As of last June, I am now the Vice President of the Philadelphia Musicians Union, American Federation of Musicians, Local 77.

I have served on the HSO Orchestra Committee off and on for many years and I am currently our ROPA (Regional Orchestra Players Association) Delegate. It is in this capacity and my position at Local 77 where I am constantly reminded of the fact that the Harrisburg Symphony is a special organization. The care that the HSO Board and Management have for the musicians is evident, and to be commended. Other musicians have told me how unique this is and I have not experienced it myself in other ensembles.

When Covid struck and everything was canceled, the HSO was one of the first groups out of the gate who reassured the musicians that they would be paid. My colleagues are constantly in awe when I relay how caring and generous the HSO has been with payroll.  As we continue through this pandemic I hope that the symphony can find a way to perform somehow and somewhere, not only so we can work again but because we know and love our patrons and want them to hear us.

Thank you for all you do to keep the music playing in Harrisburg!

PLANNED GIFTS OR ESTATE PLANS

Sincere gratitude is extended to our friends who have remembered the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra in their estate plan. Your generosity will secure the future of the HSO. If you have named us in your estate plan and you do not see your name on the list, please contact Cheri Comasco at 717-612-4964 so we may list you with our current members.

Legacy Society

ESTATE GIVINGPlanned Giving creates a legacy that will extend your generosity into the future, confident that the values and assets you developed during your lifetime are passed on according to your wishes.

With little or no current financial impact on you, this caring act may result in the largest and most lasting gift you are make. The lives touched at the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and the potential they hold, can be your legacy. A properly planned estate or deferred gift to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra offers potential tax and other financial benefits for your estate and heirs. It is important that you consider how charitable gifts might impact your overall estate plan, so it is important to consult with your attorney and other professional advisors.

“Estate” is the legal term that describes all of your possessions and your property. Estate planning can and should be as important as retirement planning. Anyone, at any age, can benefit from an estate plan. Estate planning is

on-going as one considers taxing implications and charitable donations for gift planning. You may provide an unrestricted gift or direct your gift to a specific area.

When you have completed your estate plan, and provided for a gift to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, simply inform us in writing that the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra is included in your estate plan.

Documentation of your planned gift is very important and much appreciated. Suitable documentation would include:

A copy of the pertinent provisions of your will or trust A copy of your life insurance policy which names the

HSO as the beneficiary A letter from your attorney stating that you have

included Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra in your estate plan.

With such documentation, participants are enrolled in the Legacy Society. Of course, you have the option to remain anonymous.

The Legacy Society honors the individuals, who through their planned and estate gifts, have made a significant commitment to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. The symphony is grateful to those who endorse our heritage and traditions and who have provided philanthropic support to ensure future generations will enjoy the orchestral music of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

During the 2019-2020 season, HSO music education programs continued to provide multiple opportunities for the students of Central Pennsylvania to experience and learn about orchestral music.

We have included some of our favorite musical moments and highlights below.

Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra

EducationalOutreach

A Family Affair This season we welcomed 218 subscribers as part of our Capital BlueCross Musical Chairs subscription program. This program offers families with children in grades K-12 an affordable Masterworks Subscription plan and supports the HSO’s mission to cultivate future music lovers.

First Listen In November 2019, approximately 2,200 students from more than 15 school districts arrived at the Forum for the HSO’s fall Young Person’s Concert (YPC). This concert, entitled Musical Motors, focused on rhythm and movement in music. The musical moment shown here captures HSO Principal Tuba, Eric Henry, connecting with students and parents before the concert. For many students in the Harrisburg region, the HSO YPC series offers their first live orchestral experience.

Kids up Front! The HSO’s Welcome to the Concert program offers our youngest concert-goers a way to connect with concert repertoire at their level. Upon entering the Forum, children receive a specially designed kids’ program filled with activities and information about the music they will hear during the concert.

At intermission, students (and parents!) connect with Mark Hunsberger, HSO Director of Education, for an interactive lesson that demonstrates musical components connected to the concert repertoire. This musical moment features students learning about the fundamentals of jazz - the music that inspired Gershwin to compose Porgy and Bess.

Learning on the FlyWhile Covid-19 prevented students and teachers from experiencing the HSO at the May 2020 YPC, it did not stop them from learning about orchestral music. All students and teachers registered for the May YPC received an electronic version of materials from the HSO’s fall Musical Motors YPC.

Learn from the ProsIn addition to our top-notch team of conductors, HSYO students had numerous opportunities to “learn from the pros.”

Through our annual Eric Mendlow Scholarship Program, we formed a new partnership with the Philadelphia International Music Festival (PIMF). The Mendlow Scholarship affords one HSYO student a full scholarship to attend PIMF. This year’s scholarship was awarded to HSYO senior violinist, Katherine Molloy.

HSYO students discovered the benefits of Alexander Technique through a group masterclass led by local certified Alexander Technique specialist, Joe Schaefer. The Alexander technique focuses on identifying harmful, habitual movement patterns and consciously working toward more relaxed and efficient movements and posture, all of which makes playing music more effortless.

While Covid-19 prevented HSYO from meeting in person, the HSYO team created an online masterclass series entitled HSYO at Home. Students learned from HSO musicians, Broadway musicians, professional educators, and participated in music trivia nights hosted by the HSYO team!

HARRISBURG SYMPHONY

Youth OrchestraThe 2019-2020 season marked the 66th anniversary of the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestras (HSYO) program.

Boasting 187 students amongst three ensembles, HSYO continued to offer opportunities for students to learn and grow as musicians. We have included some of our favorite moments below.

Some Good “News”The 2019-2020 season brought a bunch of good “news” for the HSYO program! We hired a new Youth Symphony Coordinator, designed a new logo, and started a new Elementary String

Orchestra (ESO) for fourth and fifth grade students.

We are thrilled to expand our training ensembles program and impact even more students in the Harrisburg region. As Mark Hunsberger, HSO Director of Education, says:

“Through music, we help students become the best version of themselves. We nurture their passion for music and help them develop the skills – self-worth, discipline, goal-setting, empathy – necessary to lead successful, community-focused lives. That is the real joy of what we do – helping students discover how they can use their passion and talents to contribute to their community.”

A Day in the City In October, 90 HSYO students ventured to Philadelphia for a day of music and bonding. The highlight of the trip was experiencing Gustav Mahler’s fifth symphony performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, followed by a private Q & A session with members of the orchestra.

Additionally, students received private, guided tours at the Museum of the American Revolution, ate lunch at the Bourse food court, and enjoyed dinner and gameplay at Dave and Busters along the Delaware River.

Dear Symphony Family,

What an awesome year for both of us! We finished our first year with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra (HSO) and we couldn’t be happier. You made us feel welcome from day one and we cannot thank you enough!

The year gave us the opportunity to learn from you how important the Symphony is to Central Pennsylvania! We learned what the Symphony means to each and every one of you, not only through your financial support, but through countless phone calls, letters, emails, and one-on-one conversations. It is incredible to be a part of an organization people are so passionate about.

Behind the scenes, we changed the name of the annual fund to the Symphony Fund, a reminder that your gifts provide Stuart and our musicians the funds to create awe-inspiring symphonic music year-round. We applied for and received grant funding from both government and private foundations. We also partnered with many long-time corporate sponsors, as well as new friends of the HSO.

We all know the season was cut short due to the pandemic, but your continued support created hope for everyone at the HSO. We adapted to this situation and you adapted right there with us! You showed that Music Blooms in Central PA and were so very generous in donating your tickets back to the Symphony. You have stuck by us and for this we are truly grateful!

Your generosity and support of the HSO has been overwhelming! Your donations to the symphony exceeded our expectations: the total amount raised was an astounding $1,813,500!

All of your gifts, no matter the size, have made a huge impact for us. We look forward to the year ahead and in discovering, with you, how we will navigate the new year. Whatever happens, we know one thing is certain, we are all in this together and it will be A Season Like No Other.

We miss you but we know we will see you again. Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

Goodbye JeffOn a very hot Wednesday, July 1st, the HSO staff held a picnic outside to say goodbye to our Executive Director, Jeff Woodruff. We really enjoyed the camaraderie and the time together listening to stories and reminiscing. We wish Jeff all the best in his retirement!

Our vision to celebrate, amplify, thank, and praise our community continues to motivate and inspire us as we plan for our new date of celebration: May 1, 2021. In alignment with our focus, we have renamed our event Music in the Key of We: A Celebration of Community. While it won’t be a celebration of concurrent anniversaries, it will definitely be one of unity, resilience and prosperity.

Friends of the HarrisburgSymphony Orchestra

Dear Friends,

The already historic 2019-2020 HSO season also marked the milestone 30th Anniversary of the Harrisburg Symphony Society (HSS). Founded in 1989 as the volunteer auxiliary of the HSO, the HSS promotes the growth and development of the Symphony through fundraising efforts, special events, support of educational programs, and continuing visibility initiatives. Since its inception, the HSS has raised more than two million dollars to benefit the Orchestra.

While our annual calendar is filled with many activities, fall finds everyone especially excited to gather and this season was no exception. The HSS kicked off opening concert weekend in grand style with a special brunch, “Let the Celebration Begin,” at Whitaker Center, which featured a fabulous musical duo, Jimmy Wood (piano) and Steve Measley (bass).

In January, we paid tribute to past HSS Board President Julie Sullivan. An amazing woman, Julie led the HSS before being taken from us too soon. The evening included her husband and children, her friends, and wonderful memories.

The HSS has also been an integral part of plans for “Music in the Key of We” Celebration of Community still to come. We may have postponed until 2021, but the fun and community will be better than ever. We look forward to seeing you there!

New this year, we are launching a Membership Development Committee whose members will serve as friendship ambassadors for the HSS in our community, further fostering support and membership. Our Long-Range Planning Committee is already looking ahead and making plans for exciting future events.

We thank you for your support and invite you to join us as HSS plans are finalized for A Season Like No Other and beyond!

Amy Black

On Thursday, August 13, 2020 the Symphony Society board met at the West Shore Country Club (outside in the tent) for the first meeting of the new year. The event was hosted by Jean Grandon.  During the meeting Amy Black, 2020-2021 President, thanked Karen Best, outgoing president,  for her outstanding leadership during the 2019-2020 year and she presented Karen with flowers. The HSS is looking forward to an eventful year ahead.

I am delighted to work with such an outstanding group of ushers at the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra! The enthusiasm and camaraderie shown by our volunteers always puts a smile on the face of our guests as we help each find their seat. While we are a diverse group, ranging from retirees to high school students, we do have a few things in common - we love music and we love people. You will always find a welcoming smile and an excited conversation as we do our best to make your visit with us the very best it can be!

We would love to welcome you to our volunteer family! You can fill out the volunteer application online at www.HarrisburgSymphony.org/contribute/volunteer.

Thank you!

Dear Friends,

The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 90th anniversary season in 2019-2020! It was a season filled with exciting and intense performances: Zev Malina’s debut composition to open the season, the return of Michael Cavanaugh and Lisa Vroman, and unforgettable performances of South Pacific and Porgy and Bess.

Just like you, we were saddened and disappointed when the season was cut short in March, but so many of you demonstrated overwhelming generosity by donating your tickets or taking credits to future concerts. Your kindness, friendship, and loyal support has been incredibly moving. Our Symphony Family is second to none, and conversations with so many of you remind us how important the HSO is to our community. Your incredible support and promises to “stick with us through the good times and the bad”, provide hope to our musicians, staff, board, and volunteers. This sentiment keeps us working hard to bring you world-class symphonic music in innovative ways.

It is with your loyal, and continued support that we move forward with confidence. Our partnership with you, and our mutual love for live music, will guarantee that we will experience A Season Like No Other.

Warmest Regards,

Gloria Giambalvo Kay Hirons Director of Sales & Marketing Box Office Manager

CARES Act Expands Tax Deductions for Charitable Giving

NONPROFIT ORGUS POSTAGE

PAIDHARRISBURG, PA

PERMIT #173

800 CORPORATE CIR STE 101HARRISBURG PA 17110-9346

New Giving Opportunity for Non-ItemizersIf you do not itemize deductions, you may nonetheless take an “above-the-line” deduction for up to $300 in cash gifts you make to the Harrisburg Symphony.

Only contributions actually made during 2020 qualify. In other words, any excess cash contributions carried over from prior years are not eligible for this one-time, “above-the-line” deduction.

Although we do not yet have formal guidance from IRS, it appears a married couple filing jointly may deduct up to $600 “above the line,” if each makes cash gifts of at least $300.

“Unlimited” Deduction for Cash GiftsIf you do itemize, you may deduct up to the entire amount of your adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash gifts you make in 2020, without reference to the 60 percent limitation that would otherwise apply.

If you also make noncash gifts, which are subject to lower AGI limitations, or if you have carryforwards from noncash gifts made in prior years, you can still take advantage of the temporary “unlimited” deduction for cash gifts, without losing a carryforward year for those items. Excess cash gifts will simply be carried forward to 2021.

The limitation on deductions for cash contributions by corporations has also been temporarily increased, from 10 percent of taxable income to 25 percent.

Relief from the Minimum Distribution RequirementRequired minimum distributions (RMDs) from IRAs and other “defined contribution” retirement plans have been waived for 2020. If you are age 72 or older, this gives you more flexibility in taking distributions. Given the extreme volatility of the markets during the COVID-19 crisis, this respite can give your retirement portfolio another year to recover.

“Charitable IRA” Rules UnchangedThe minimum age for making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA - the so-called “charitable IRA Rollover” - is still 70½, and the annual limit is still $100,000. The QCD is still available for 2020 even though RMDs have been suspended. Or you can take distributions from your IRA and make deductible gifts in 2020, with no AGI limitation.

Please contact your financial advisor for further details.

The CARES Act is a 335-page bill, and we are not qualified to give legal or financial advice. Contact your professional advisors if you are considering a sizable gift.
