Who We Are
What is the University of the Third Age (U3A)?
The U3A is not a university in the traditional meaning of the word.
It does not offer degrees, diplomas or qualifications of any kind. It
is made up of members who want to take up old hobbies or start
new ones, people who want to learn new skills, increase their
knowledge in a range of subjects, get out and about, meet others,
learn and have fun.
Most of our lives we have been learning new things, whether at
school, college or at work. Now that we have come to our third
age, retirement, we are free to follow interests which give us
pleasure and which will continue to keep us active and alert in our
later years.
U3A Ethos
Unlike a traditional university the U3A does not have lecturers and
students. Groups are organised by volunteers, who may or may
not be experts in that subject or activity. Members are expected to
come together in a spirit of co-operation, sharing expertise and
learning from the experience of others. It is this blurring of the
distinction between teacher and taught and the emphasis on both
accepting responsibility for our own learning and on helping
others, which makes U3A groups distinctive and innovative.
Swindon U3A
Swindon U3A is led and managed by members who are all
volunteers. The Management Committee meets regularly to
discuss finances, plan events and initiate developments. The work
of the office, IT development and publications creation and
distribution etc. are all carried out by members. More help is
always needed so if you would like to join the team in any capacity
please get in touch. Contact details are on the back of this
booklet.

New Members’ Meeting Saturday 26th October 10:00 am - 12.00 noon
Tea/Coffee available from 9:30 am The New Members’ Meeting provides an opportunity to meet
some of the management committee, other new members and the
staunch band of volunteers who keep the wheels of Swindon U3A
well oiled with tea and coffee and fortified with biscuits at a wide
range of events.
The Monthly Meeting The Monthly Meeting sounds like some type of committee meeting
but it is far from that! For those of you who are new to U3A, or
unfamiliar with what the Monthly Meeting has to offer, here is a bit
of a run-down on what you can expect.
The meeting takes place on the second Monday in each month, at
the Ellendune Centre in Wroughton, from 2:15 pm to about
3:30 pm.
It is open to all members of the U3A, at no additional cost and on
an ad-hoc basis. In other words, you do not have to commit to
“joining” as with most other U3A groups. There is no waiting list.
Just turn up on the day.
The invited speaker gives a talk, lasting for about an hour. Tea
and coffee are available, for which a small charge of 20p is made.
The speakers for these meetings are booked well in advance and
cover a myriad of topics. Last year talks covered subjects as
diverse as the Wiltshire Air Ambulance service and My Journey to
the Weakest link. There is something to interest everyone.
The full programme of events is on the following page. In addition,
every meeting is advertised in advance in the Newsletter or What’s
On. If you cannot put your hands on any of these publications,
then just turn up on the second Monday in any month and see
what is going on. You will be very welcome!

Groups
Notes on Applying for Groups
There is a wide choice of groups available for you to join but
please check with the group organiser to see if there are spaces
available. If you cannot see a group which interests you, consider
starting your own group. A great deal of help is available from the
U3A to guide you on how to do this. Please contact the Group
Coordinator by emailing [email protected]
When you have found a group or groups which interest you:-
• Contact the group organiser to see if there are spaces. If a
group is full, ask to be put on a waiting list. If necessary a
new group will be started to meet demand.
• If there is a space in a group, you may, with the agreement
of the group organiser, attend one session as a taster. If you
are not yet a member of the U3A you must join to continue
going to the group.
• Please let the group organiser know if for any reason you are
unable to attend. This also applies should you decide to
leave a group. The organiser can then fill your place from the
waiting list.
The U3A takes a short break during August and if your group
continues through this break you will be asked to contribute a
small amount to cover any venue costs.
All the groups currently available are listed on the following pages.
If you are interested in a specific group you can find it in the
index.
This Yearbook is also available in a printed format and is available
from the U3A office at Gorse Hill Community Centre.
NB Group organisers can be contacted by clicking on the link in
each group’s entry in this Yearbook. This will open a contact form
to enable you to make an enquiry and an organiser will get back
to you. Your enquiry will go to all the organisers for that particular
group. Telephone numbers and email addresses of organisers are
not shown in this version of the Yearbook because it can lead to a
breach of the Data Protection Regulations.
