WHAT IS THE DRAW?The Draw is the process by which undergraduate students apply for university housing for the next academic year. Undergraduate students who need housing beginning in Autumn Quarter 2019 should apply by the Draw deadline, May 6th, 2019.

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN THE DRAW?

■ Visit TheDraw.Stanford.edu for Draw resources, topic-driven explanations, and video tutorials.

■ Decide where and with whom you would like to live and which tier you would like to use. Students who have guaranteed years remaining are required to select a tier level on their Draw applications. Each tier level dictates a range of numbers from which the student’s random application number will be assigned.

■ To submit your Draw application, log onto Axess and select “Student Housing and Dining” from the Student drop- down menu.

■ Select “Apply for Housing.”

■ Follow prompts to complete and submit your application.

Due Monday, April 1 Registration for medical accommodation (housing or dining) for students not previously registered with the Office of Accessible Education

Friday, April 5th Draw portal opens in Axess

IMPORTANT DATES

THE DRAW 2019-20

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW FOR DRAW 2019? ■ Autumn move-in day for upperclass

students is Friday, September 20 and frosh move-in is Wednesday, September 18.

■ The Pre-Assignment (resed.stanford.edu/preassignment) and Medical Accommodation (stanfordcommunity.force.com/OAE/s/) processes occur before the Draw.

■ Pre-assignment applications are available April 2 to April 11.

■ The deadline for new registrations with the Office of Accessible Education (OAE) to go through the Disability Draw is April 1, including submission of medical documentation. Students requesting emotional support animals need to register with the OAE. The deadline to submit the Housing Accommodation Request Form to the OAE for the Disability Draw AND to submit housing applications for the Med Draw is April 15. Students can do the above processes simultaneously.

■ If you are a rising senior and a member of a housed fraternity or sorority, you will need to submit a petition to request the use of your Tier 1 for your fourth year in housing (if you have used

tier 3, have not used tier 1, and will not live in the house next year).

■ If you wish to live in a gender-inclusive room with a friend who has a different gender of record, review the locations and room types for gender-inclusive housing and rank those as your top choices. If assigned to a residence and room type in the gender-inclusive program, submit the gender-inclusive room request form by May 27, in advance of the in-house draw.

■ Be sure to apply by the Draw deadline. If you miss this, you can’t be in a group with friends who applied on time. Also, because all housing will have already been assigned in the Draw, you won’t be considered for assignment until July after we have received some cancellations.

■ As the University is completing arrangements related to 550 Lasuen, it will not be listed among the 2019 - 2020 Draw options. The University anticipates that 550 Lasuen will be filled during the Waiting List Round. ResEd is in the process of coordinating with the student staff assigned to 550 Lasuen for 2019-20.

THE DRAW DEADLINE IS MONDAY, MAY 6TH AT 6:00 P.M. PST.Apply early! You can edit your application as many times as you want up until the Draw deadline.

10 TIPS TO NAVIGATE THE DRAW

Select the correct quarter.Be sure to select the correct start quarter on your application. Students who apply for winter or

spring quarters aren’t assigned until later in the academic year. If you need housing for summer quarter 2019 in addition to housing during the 2019-20 academic year, fill out two applications: one for summer quarter, and one for housing beginning in autumn, winter, or spring quarter.

List where you want to live.Sometimes students do not list residences they want because they believe their Draw number will

not be low enough to get into those houses. Every year cut-off numbers for residences change. List where you want to live!

Make an extensive list of choices.No matter what tier you are using, make an extensive list of choices! Keep ranking choices until

you have no preference between the choices you have left unranked. If you are guaranteed housing, you must select “I am willing to accept any other assignment” as your final application choice in order to preserve your guarantee. If we cannot assign you to one of your residence choices and you are assigned out of this final choice, you will be assigned after all other students to one of the least popular residences and room types. This is why it is critical that you make a long list of housing choices.

Applying as a group? Select the same residence choices.In order to stay with your group of up to four

students, select the exact same residence choices in the exact same order. Once you list a choice that is different from your friends, the Draw program is unable to hold you with your group mates.

Copy your group leader’s choices.You can use the “Copy My Group Leader’s Choices” button located at the top of the Residence Choice

list to make sure everyone in your group has the same choices in the same order. If your group leader changes their choices after you have copied them, be sure everyone in your group copies the choices once again. Only you can update the choices on your application.

Use Group Retention.When you apply as a group, you are required to indicate through how many residence choices

you would like to stay with your group. This is called group retention. If you set it to 1, the Draw program will only try to keep your group together through its first choice. In order to stay together through all of your residence choices, set group retention high enough to cover all of those choices. If, after submitting your application, you go back in and change your residence choices, be sure to double check your group retention level.

Save the application.Be sure to hit the submit button after previewing your application. You will receive a confirmation

email at your Stanford account once it has been submitted.

Keep your housing guarantee.If you are guaranteed housing, you must select “I am willing to accept any other assignment” as your

final choice in order to preserve your guarantee of autumn quarter housing.

Be careful with “Any” options.If you are assigned through an “any” choice, such as “Any Branner,” you are assigned the last space

in the house because you are willing to accept “any” room type in that house. Be sure to list specific choices such as “Branner single” or “Branner two-room double” before listing an “any” choice.

Submit your application on time! The 2019 Draw deadline is Monday, May 6th at 6:00 p.m. PST.

If you miss this deadline, you can’t be in a group with friends who applied on time and because all housing will have already been assigned in the Draw, you won’t be considered for assignment until July after we have received some cancellations.

The Draw is designed to give students as much control as possible when choosing where they want to live. With so many options, participating in the Draw can be a daunting task!
