A Guide for M.Ed. Students in Higher Education Program

COURSEWORK AND BENCHMARK REQUIREMENTS TheM.Ed.inHigherEducationisdesignedtoenablestudentstocompletetheirdegreeinapproximatelytwoyears.Specifically,studentswilltakethirty-six(36)credithoursofcourseworktocompletethedegree.Sincedegreeplansareenhancedperiodicallytosupportcontinuousimprovementplanningobjectives,studentswillfollowtheirapproveddegreeplanthatisinplaceatthetimeinwhichtheycompleteanofficial,approveddegreeplan.

ACADEMICANDADMINISTRATIVEBENCHMARKSFORM.ED.

M.Ed.Classifications

• Full-timestudentsinthemaster’sprogramengageinacohort-based,on-campuslearningenvironmentandtypicallyholdagraduateassistantshipwithinauniversitystudentoracademicaffairsoffice.Thefull-timecurriculumistypicallycompletedintwo(2)academicyears(fallandspringsemesters).

• Part-timestudentsinthemaster’sprogramaretypicallyworkingprofessionalswhowillcompletetheprograminsix(6)successivesemesters,includingsummerterms,asmembersoftheface-to-facecohort.Part-timestudentsareexpectedtoenrollintwoacademiccoursesperacademictermincludingsummerterms.Duringthesummersemesters,allcoursesaredeliveredinanonlineformat.

• Onlinestudentsinthemaster’sprogramparticipateinacohortmodelthatenablesstudentstoearntheirmaster’sdegreeinsixsuccessivesemesters(approximatelytwoyears).Intheonlinecohort,studentsareexpectedtoenrollintwocoursesperacademictermincludingsummerterms.Theonlineformatmakesearningamaster’sdegreeinHigherEducationpossibleforstudentswhoareplace-bound,orwhohaveexistingfamilyorworkobligationsthatmakeitdifficulttoregularlyattendface-to-faceclassmeetings.

Studentsadmittedintooneprogramdeliveryformatmuststayenrolledinthatformat,registeringforclassesofferedonlyinthatdeliveryformat.AlldeviationsmustberequestedbygraduatepetitionandapprovedbygraduatepetitionbytheM.Ed.ProgramDirector.

Theexaminationisofferedonceayear–intheSpringsemester.ExactdateswillvaryeachyearandwillbesharedbytheProgramDirectorviatheprogramlistserv.Studentsmusthavecompletedatleast24requiredhoursandshouldapplyfortheexaminthefinalsemesteroftheirprogramthroughMyAdvisor(https://www.coe.uh.edu/MyAdvisor/login.cfm).Applicationdeadlineswillalsobesharedviatheprogramlistserv.Underexceptionalcircumstances,studentsmaypetitiontotakethecomprehensiveexaminationoutsideoftheSpringsemester,butitmustberequestedbygraduatepetitionandapprovedbytheadvisor,graduatestudiescommittee,andthedepartmentchairperson.

Afterbeingapprovedtotaketheexam,studentswillreceivedetailedexaminstructions,alongwiththegradingrubricfacultywillusetoscoretheassignment.Foreachquestion,studentswillpreparea5-7double-pagedresponseandmayuseavailableresources(e.g.,coursebooksandreadings,journalarticles)indoingso.ThepapermustadheretoAPAguidelinesandincludealistofreferencesusedinthedevelopmentoftheexamresponses.StudentswillsubmittheirexamtotheELPSProgramManagertobesubmittedelectronicallytoTurnItIn,anonlineplagiarismdetectionwebsite.

Approximatelytwomonthspriortotheexamadministration,aninformationsessionwillbeheldtoprovidestudentswithguidanceonpreparingfortheexam.Facultywillprovidestudentswithappropriatereviewmaterials,butstudentswillnotbegivenanexactquestionthatwillappearontheexam.

Atleasttwofull-timeCollegeofEducationfacultymemberswillgradetheexam.Adjunctorpart-timefacultymaynotgradethequestions.Eachfacultymemberisresponsibleforscoringtheexamandreturningitwithin15workingdays.Thescoringforeachofthe3questionswillbePassorFail.

Therearetwopossibleoutcomesforscoringeachquest:PassorNoPass.TheDepartmentnotifiesthestudentoftheresultsofhis/herexamination.Studentsmustpassallthreequestionswithapassingscore(HighPassorPass)topasscompsandfulfillthisacademicbenchmarkwithintheprogram.

Ifstudentsdonotpassoneofthequestions,theywillbeaskedtoparticipateinanoralorwrittenremediationwithinthesamesemester.Ifstudentsmustremediate,ameetingwillbescheduledwiththeProgramDirectortodiscussfeedbackonresponsesbeforetheremediation.Ifastudentdoesnotpasstwoquestions,theymustretakeallsectionsofthecomprehensiveexamatthenextadministration,whichwillbeduringthenextacademicyear.Ifthestudentfailsanypartoftheexaminationasecondtime,theyshallbeineligibleforamaster’sdegreeintheCollegeofEducationattheUniversityofHouston.

MASTER’STHESISOPTION

StudentsintheHigherEducationM.Ed.programmayelecttocompleteathesisratherthansittingforthecomprehensiveexam.Ifastudentchoosesthethesisoption,theyarerequiredtocompleteaminimumof6hoursofMaster’sThesiscoursework,ELCS7399(inplaceoftheinternship(ELCS6393)andelectivecourserequirements).Thisresearchprojecttypicallytakesbetweensixandninemonthsandinvolvesthecollection,analysis,andinterpretationofquantitativeand/orqualitativedata.Studentsconsideringthisoptionshouldbemindfulthatcompletinganoriginalresearchprojectmayextendthenumberofsemestersrequiredtograduatefromtheprogram.Thedecisiontocompleteathesisshouldbemadeincloseconsultationwiththestudent’sadvisor.Studentspursingthethesisoption,shouldreferencetheappendixforfurtherdetails.

College of Education Master’s Thesis PolicyA.AMaster’sthesisresearchcommitteehasaminimumofthreemembers.

1. Thethesisadvisorchairsthecommitteeandisamemberofthestudent’smajordepartment.

2. Additionalcommitteemembersmaybefromthestudent’smajordepartment,other

departmentsintheCollegeofEducation,fromanotherCollegeorschooloftheUniversityofHouston,orfromoutsidetheUniversity.However,atleasttwocommitteemembersmustbememberofthefull-timefacultyoftheUniversityofHouston.

3. AcommitteememberoftheoutsidetheUniversitymustholdadjunctstatusattheUniversity

ofHoustonorshallberecommendedbytheresearchadvisortoserveasadjunctonaone-timeonlybasis(seeD.below).

B.Forstudentschoosingthethesisoption,thestudentchoosesamemberofher/hismajordepartmenttoserveasresearchadvisorandthesiscommitteechairpersonbasedonthefacultymember’sexpertiseandwillingness.Thestudentandadvisoridentifyatleasttwoadditionalprospectivemembersofthecommittee,andseektheiragreementtoservealongwiththeadvisorasthestudent’sthesiscommittee.C.Atleastonefacultymemberoftheresearchcommitteemustprovidemethodologicalexpertisenecessaryforthestudent’sstudy.D.UsingaformavailableintheGraduateStudiesOffice,theresearchadvisorrecommendsthethesiscommitteethroughtheappropriatedepartmentchairpersontotheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudieswhomakesallappointmentstoresearchcommittees.Committeemembers’expertiseshallbeincludedontheform,andthemethodologistspecificallyidentified.ProposedcommitteememberswhodonotholdappointmentattheUniversityofHoustonarerecommendedforone-timeadjunctgraduatefacultystatusbyincludingacopyoftheproposedcommitteemember’svitawiththeformrecommendingcommitteeappointment.Uponapprovalofthecommittee,theAssociateofDeanforGraduateStudiesnotifiesthecommitteemembersbyletterandprovidesacopytothestudent.Ifresearchcommitteeisnotapproved,theAssociateDeannotifiestheresearchadvisorandthestudentinwritinggivingcausefordisapproval.E.Thefollowingpoliciesgovernchangesinthecompositionofthethesiscommittee:

1. Ifathesiscommitteeadvisorormaster’sstudentwishestomakechangesinthemembershipofathesiscommittee,thatpersonsubmitsawrittenrequestforsuchchangesthroughthestudent’sdepartmentchairpersontotheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudies.Foranymemberaddedtothecommittee,awrittenjustificationofhis/herrelevantexpertisemustbeincluded.

2. Anymemberofathesiscommitteewhowishestoresignshoulddosobynotifying,inwriting,thedepartmentchair,theAssociateDeanforGraduateStudies,thestudentandallothermembersofthethesiscommittee.

3. Inallcases,changestoathesiscommitteemustbeapprovedbytheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudiesbeforethereconstitutedcommitteecanbegintofunction.

ENROLLMENTFORTHESISCREDITA.Astudentshallapplyamaximumofsix(6)credithourstowardtheminimumMasterofEducationdegreerequirementofthirty-six(36)credithours.

B.Oncethestudenthasenrolledforthesiscredit,continuousenrollmentmustbemaintained,exceptforsummers.Astudentneedstoregisterforsummeronlyifusingfacultytimeoruniversityfacilitiesduringthesummer,orifaproposaldefenseorfinaldefenseoftheMaster’sthesiswilloccurduringthatterm.ForMaster’sstudents,thecontinuousenrollmentrequirementissatisfiedbyregistrationforthree(3)semesterhoureachacademicsemester.However,asnotedabout,onlysix(6)hourswillbecreditedtowardthedegree.THESISRESEARCHPROPOSALA.Thestudentdevelopsapreliminarythesisproposalunderthesupervisionoftheresearchadvisorandwiththeassistanceofcommitteemembers.B.EverythesisinvolvingtheuseofhumansubjectsmustbereviewedbytheUniversityCommitteefortheProtectionofHumanSubjects.FormsforthispurposeareavailableintheOfficeofVicePresidentforResearch(316E.Cullen).C.Copiesoftheresearchproposalaredistributedtotheresearchcommitteemembersatleastten(10)workingdayspriorstothescheduleddefenseoftheproposal.D.Anoraldefenseoftheproposalisscheduledatatimeconvenienttothecommitteemembersandthestudent.TheresearchchairpersonnotifiestheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudies,inwriting,ofthetentativetitleoftheproposalandthetime,dateandplaceoftheproposaldefenseatleastten(10)workingdayspriortothescheduleddefense.E.Attheproposaldefense,theresearchcommitteemayapprovetheproposalasis,suggestchanges,ordisapprovetheproposal.Allmembersmustapprovetheproposal,indicatingapprovalbysignature.Ifapproved,acopyoftheproposal,thesignaturesofapprovalandtheletterapprovingtheprojectbytheHumanSubjectscommitteeareforwardedtotheGraduateStudiesOfficeforplacementinthestudent’sfile.Atthediscretionoftheresearchcommittee,changesintheproposalmaybesupervisedbytheresearchadvisorandtherevisedproposalforwardedtotheGraduateStudiesOfficewithoutreconveningthecommittee.F.Noproposalshallbeapprovedbyathesisresearchcommitteeifmorethanonememberofthecommitteeisabsentatthetimeofthestudent’sdefense.THESISDEFENSEA.Thestudentcompletesthethesisunderthesupervisionoftheresearchadvisorandwiththeassistanceofthecommitteemembers.B.ThestudentshouldrefertotheCollegeofEducationThesisandDissertationGuide,availableintheOfficeofGraduateStudies(256FarishHall),fordetailsregardingthetypingandsubmissionofthethesis.Theformatforthethesisshouldfollowthatofthedissertation.C.Copiesofthecompletedthesisaredistributedtocommitteemembersatleastten(10)workingdayspriortoascheduledthesisdefense.D.ThethesisresearchadvisorsendswrittennoticetotheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudiesatleastten(10)workingdaysinadvanceofthedate,time,andlocationofthecandidate’sfinaldefenseofthethesis.Intheweekprecedingthefinaldefense,theAssociateDeanwillpostannouncementofMaster’sthesesdefensesscheduledfortheensuingweek.

E.Defenseofthestudent’sthesisisopentothefacultyoftheUniversity,graduatestudentsoftheCollegeofEducation,andothersapprovedbytheresearchadvisor.Therefore,theroomscheduledforthethesismustaccommodateatleastten(10)persons.F.Inthethesisdefensemeeting,thestudentisrequiredtopresentanoralreviewofthethesisresearchstudy,andisexpectedtorespondtoquestionsaboutthestudybycommitteemembersandtoengageindiscussionwiththemaboutthestudy,itsprocedures,results,andimplications.Theresearchcommitteewillevaluateboththequalityofthewrittenthesisandthequalityofthestudent’soraldefenseinmakingtheirdecisionwhetherornottoapprovethethesis.G.Thethesisdefensemaynottakeplaceifmorethanonememberoftheresearchcommitteeisabsent.Thethesismaybeapprovedbythethesisresearchcommitteewithonedissentingvote.Uponapproval,thethesisissignedbyallapprovingmembersofthestudent’sresearchcommitteeandtheDeanoftheCollegeofEducation.Theresearchadvisorassignsagradetothestudent’sthesiscredits,andnotifiestheAssociateDeanforGraduateStudies,inwriting,ofthesuccessfulfinaldefenseandapprovalofthethesis.H.ThestudentsecuresoriginalsignaturesofthecommitteemembersandtheDeanoftheCollegeofEducationonthree(3)copiesoftheapprovedthesis.ThestudentsubmitscopiesoftheapprovedthesistotheGraduateStudiesOfficeforbinding.Atthetimethree(3)copiesofthethesisaresubmittedforbinding,thestudentmustalsosubmitacopyofanabstractofthethesis.ThecurrentUniversityofHoustonClassScheduleandAcademicCalendarprovidedeadlinesforsubmissionofthethesisandabstracttotheGraduateStudiesOffice.
