2019-20 ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Syllabus/ Student Orientation
1. COURSE INTRODUCTION
Mrs. Werts Golden Valley High School
AP Environmental Science requires that students identify and analyze natural and human-made environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving or preventing them. Environmental science is interdisciplinary, embracing topics from geology, biology, environmental studies, environmental science, chemistry, and geography.
This is an Advanced Placement (AP) course and is taught at the collegiate level. Successful completion of AP courses will enhance the student’s ability to be accepted into the college of their choice. It is expected that if you are taking the class, you will also be taking the AP exam.
The exam in May has two parts: There are 80 questions in the multiple-choice section, and three FRQs/ Free Response Questions. The M/C questions will test your ability to answer thought-provoking problems based on fundamental ideas from environmental science, applying facts and major concepts. The free-response questions emphasize the application of principles in greater depth than the multiple-choice questions.
Most colleges and universities give students college credit for a passing score on the exam. A list of college and Universities is available on my website and /or on the College Board website.

• Students are also strongly advised to purchase and use all year an AP study guide, I recommend Barron’s, or Princeton. More details will be given in class and can also be found on my website.
Materials Donation: $20 dollars, will be greatly appreciated. Checks can be made payable to Golden Valley High School, please indicate science supplies on the memo line. Donations go toward buying consumable lab materials and supplies.
Replacement Costs of science equipment or materials Lost or damaged textbook = $152.00
Damaged lab equipment = current price in Flinn catalog + S&H fee Other lost or damaged items = TBD by the appropriate district personnel
3. GRADING POLICY The students will learn and be graded by accomplishing many different types of activities. Activities include labs, hands–on activities, class discussion / participation, individual & group projects, class & homework assignments & of course tests.
I use a WEIGHTED TOTAL POINT system for student grades.
• UNIT TESTS are typically given close to the end of each five-week grading period and are worth 60% of the student’s total grade. Unit tests are given in the same format as AP exams: a multiple-choice exam and we will work towards both MC and FRQ given on the same day. Students may used an approved AP calculator on Unit tests and Final.
• Unit and Chapter Tests missed due to an excused absence will be given with no penalty; however, there will be NO opportunity for group Mastery Reteach/Retest if you miss the test on the day scheduled.. Make-up tests are given at lunch or afterschool, within 2 days of return to school/class. Please be sure to schedule the make-up test with the teacher.
• MASTERY RETEACH/RETEST ( Test Correction Policy): The day following Unit Tests, students will be put into groups predetermined by the teacher to complete Mastery Reteach/Retest(MRR). Unit test will not be curved, but the MMR will allow students to not only relarn the materials, but improve their overall Unit Assessment score. Grades for both the Unit Test and MRR will be entered as separate grades. This allows all students to improve their test scores.
• Students that are absent the day of a Unit Test and receive a D or and F may complete test corrections to a 70%. This opportunity to improve your grade is only available for 7days. Students are encouraged to use this opportunity to improve grades and relearn material.
For absent student only: Completing test corrections : Involves correcting all wrong answers using on the provided Test Correction form. No test may be removed from the classroom. The student will get their test
and their answer sheet from the teacher. Then using the notes/textbook, correct and explain the answers they got wrong on the form provided. No electronics may be used during test corrections and are to be done individually not with a partner. Once corrections are complete, students and teacher will correct and review together and student is given form to take home and study. Student will then take test over (for up to 70%.)
The grading scale for the class is shown

4. ASSIGNMENT POLICY
Assignments should be worked on daily; students should expect to have homework every day. Guided Notes assignments allow students to work ahead. Guided Notes and other assignments are posted on my website.
• Reading and vocabulary quizzes may be given 2-3 days a week at the beginning of the period, these are unannounced so be sure to stay current, if you are tardy or truant you will receive a zero on the quiz. If you have an excused tardy or absence you have 2 days to make-up the quiz during brunch or lunch. FYI: questions will be different than quiz given in class, but will cover the same material, or you may be asked to do an alternative assignment.
• AP Progress checks/quiz will be given throughout the year prior to Unit tests.
• Follow directions on Guided Notes, your completed GN may be used on reading quizzes.
• Cheating and plagiarism of any kind will result in an automatic zero with no chance for an alternative assignment. This includes, daily work, classwork etc.. See my webpage for instructions on citations as needed.
ABSENCES: Attendance is crucial for success in this course. Every effort should be made to attend school daily. With an
absence, a student misses valuable class activities, discussions, lab, and lectures. It is extremely difficult to “make up” actual class time. In the event of an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain any make-up work from the website, another student or the teacher. This includes finding out what you missed, copying notes from a responsible class member, and completing the assigned homework. Students are given one day for every excused absence to complete (new) missing assignments. Major projects and other assignments with due dates given in advance should be emailed or delivered to your teacher the day it is due if possible
✓ Late work due to an excused off-campus absence is due the day following your return.
✓ If you are on campus and miss class (excused) due to a school function, field trip or athletic event be sure to turn in your homework/assignment that day to avoid a late work penalty.
• MAKE UP WORK IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. If you know you will be missing a class, let me know. • If your absence unplanned (i.e. sick, family emergency, etc), please email the teacher that day or contact a friend to
receive assignments. • I do understand that things happen from time to time which could result in late work even for the most responsible
student. For this reason every student will be granted two “natural disaster” passes per semester. This is a free pass to turn the assignment in, two days late for any reason, without explanation and without penalty. Your “natural disaster” may not be used on Tests or major assignments/projects unless you have ADVANCE PERMISSION. Advance permission means that you have discussed the situation with the teacher at least one full day prior to the due date and everyone is in agreement on the terms of the permission.
• Sometimes it is just not possible to make-up some assignments, for example labs. Please see me for an alternative assignment or to schedule a make-up lab time. Other late work will be accepted for partial credit up to a week late only.
Late work will be marked down: 1 day - 25% 2 days- 50% 3 days – 75% 4 days – no credit
5. MOVIES AND VIDEOS Throughout the semester, movies and video clips will be shown that enhance the curriculum, give students a visual
representation of the material being studied, and reinforces concepts we are studying. In addition, short excerpts will be shown as they relate to the curriculum. If a full-length movie is going to be shown that is rated higher than PG-13 a letter will be sent home and students will need parent permission to view the video. However, a permission slip will not be sent for G or PG-13 movies or documentaries used in class.
6. ACADEMIC HONESTY Any student involved in copying someone’s homework, guided notes, copying test answers, providing answers to
someone, plagiarism, on any work, will be subject to one, some or all of the following: an automatic zero on the work; one day suspension from class; a referral an administrator; and a conference with the administrator, the parents and the teacher.
Pick-Up Policy: Any paper/assignment found on your desk during class, belonging to another student, no matter the subject will be “picked-up” and neither assignment will be returned.
7. SCIENCE SAFETY The safety of students in my class is an important concern. Students will be instructed on general Science safety at the
beginning of the semester and with every lab/activity. Students must pass a laboratory safety test (80% or higher) and a signed safety contract must be on file to be allowed to participate in labs. Failure to do so will result in zeros on the missed labs.
4
8. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT POLICY In order to create the best learning atmosphere, the following rules will be followed in my classroom. • RESPECT: peers, teachers, administrators, visitors, textbooks, supplies and facilities • RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY: Be responsible and accountable for all YOUR actions!
• PREPARATION: Be on time to class with all materials. (GV Tardy Policy will be enforced) • Be familiar with GVHS’s BEAR EXPECTATIONS
If students get in the way with the learning process of others, they will be dealt with accordingly. First, they will be warned and, if the behavior persists, they will receive a step on the 5-step Opportunity system. Refusing to comply with teacher’s instructions will result in automatic class suspension.
**No photography or taping in the classroom of any kind during class without the teacher’s permission.
• Only water bottles are allowed in class. Any other bottle and/or food will be disposed of upon entering the classroom or the teacher will confiscate it. Repeated violation of this rule will result in after-class clean-up duty or other consequence determined by the teacher.
10. TEACHER CONFERENCE PERIOD Class time is limited; if you need to talk to me privately, please arrange to come in before or after school, brunch or lunch. Please mention or email me that you will be coming to ensure that I will be in my room to help you. My prep period this year is 7th period.
I am happy to provide answers and clarification for all of my students and their parents. The most effective way to contact me is through email. If a student has a question regarding homework, please do not assume that I will be checking email from home after 8:30 PM.
Additional information such as grades, email information and assignments can be found at my class web site:
https://mrswerts.weebly.com/
You can also use the link on the GVHS staff directory to find my website
Please feel free to email me: dwerts@ hartdistrict. org or call me if you have any questions (661) 298-8140 ext. 1304
• Cell phones, electronic devices and ear buds are to be turned off and put away upon arriving to class. Students may not have “electronics” out for any reason (including checking the time, receiving or sending texts or emails, photography, listening to music or accessing games, etc.) unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Failure to comply with this policy will result in:
• confiscation of devices by the teacher: item will be locked up for remainder of class
• A 2nd offense will result in the cell phone or device being confiscated and turned in to the Assistant Principal.
Other items deemed to be a distraction (make-up, ear buds/earphones, toys, etc.) will also be handled in the same way.

I send reminders to students of upcoming dates and other important information. REMIND is a great way for me to contact all students in case of date changes ( i.e. test dates or due dates for assignments. There are 2 ways students receive these:
1) As a text
message
2) Don’t have a mobile/cell phone? To receive message by email notifications.
Go to rmd.at/agcg9b on a desktop computer to sign up for email notifications
Golden Valley High School graduates will be:
• Critical thinkers who communicate effectively, problem solve efficiently and utilize technology appropriately.
• Globally-minded citizens who use their knowledge, skills and unique talents to contribute to their community while demonstrating respect for self and others.
• Successful learners who demonstrate a mastery of Common Core State Standards in preparation for the 21st century workplace.

Dear Parent or Guardian:
We feel that you should be informed regarding the school’s effort to create and maintain a safe science classroom/laboratory environment. With the cooperation of the instructors, parents, and students, a safety instruction program can eliminate, prevent and correct possible hazards. You should be aware of the safety instructions your son/daughter will receive before engaging in any laboratory work. Please read the list of safety rules on the previous pages. No student will be permitted to perform laboratory activities unless this contract is signed by both the student and parent/guardian and is on file with the teacher.
Your signature on this contract indicates that you have read this Student Safety Contract, are aware of the measures taken to ensure the safety of your son/daughter in the science laboratory, and will instruct your son/daughter to uphold his/her agreement to follow these rules and procedures in the laboratory.
