WHY STUDY WITH US?

Our HE students rated our standards of teaching at 94% - well over the sector-wide average of 84%.

More than 2500 students enrol on leisure & language programmes each year. There is literally something for everyone.

Our pioneering approach to learning allows students to study for a degree one day a week, whilst continuing in employment.

Affordable fees

76% of our Degree students achieve high grades ie: a 1st or 2:1 Honours Degree.

In many subjects you can start at Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) and progress to a full

degree programme.

Our small class sizes allow more opportunity for individual attention.

WELCOME

We also provide another chance to gain the entry qualifications to university through our ACCESS to HE programme along with a real alternative to studying at a traditional university. Through designing our own degrees and validating them with Middlesex University and the University of Chichester, we have developed a framework that provides cost effective programmes without compromising on the quality, support and guidance given to students.

We are at the forefront of developing high quality, affordable higher education. If the cost of obtaining a degree via the traditional university route is preventing you from furthering your education, or perhaps you are already employed and want to obtain a degree, please do have a look at what there is for you. We are a friendly and supportive community with tutors who continue to work in their chosen career or profession who can bring current real world experience to their teaching and are expert in enabling adults to succeed. We welcome students from all walks of life and age groups.

Some students will have recently left college whilst others are returning to study after quite a gap. The vast majority of our students find that they achieve goals which were perceived as ‘out of reach’ before starting their course. Alongside this a great many friendships are formed as students study and progress together.

It is impossible to tell you all about Peter Symonds Adult & Higher Education Division in just a few pages, so please do visit us on one of our open events or explore our courses on our website www.psc.ac.uk/ahed. Along with our wide and varied Leisure and Foreign Language programmes we offer a second chance for many to gain formal qualifications enhancing their career and employment opportunities.

DEGREE PROGRAMMES

“Doing a degree through Peter Symonds AHED has completely changed my life. Going back into Education was a daunting thought, but I knew I needed a Degree for my career progression. Previously a House Keeper, I am now an Executive Assistant in the Clinical Services Sector!”

“I loved my degree course at Peter Symonds...it definitely inspired me and gave me the confidence to start a new job at a higher level. My Foundation degree in Early Years has led to me being made the Pre School Supervisor at a school in Swanmore, so I am no longer just an assistant. I am in charge.”

GCSE, FUNCTIONAL SKILLS & LDD

English and Maths GCSEs are free if you do not already have a Grade C/9-4 or above. You will need to apply and then come in for an assessment. It may be that you will be better suited to our Functional Skills courses prior to taking GCSEs. Please note, GCSE courses are only available to learners aged 19+, unless the student is also enrolled on a full time course at PSC AHED.

Functional Skills classes are for anyone (19+) without a GCSE or equivalent (Grade A*-C/9-4) in English or Maths. These classes are run at various times. To ensure that you are placed in an appropriate class, all applicants will be invited to attend an informal interview. The time and day of your class will depend on the outcome of your assessment. If you are a non-EU citizen and have not been in the country for at least 3 years the course will cost £435

(full year) or £145 per term.

“This course enabled me to get my dream job as it gave me the confidence and skills to pass the employer’s maths test!” Previous Student, Functional Skills Maths

VOCATIONALLY RELATED QUALIFICATIONS (VRQ)VRQs are nationally-recognised qualifications that give students the skills and knowledge required to meet the standards of a particular industry. Rather than taking a formal examination, VRQs are assessed by a qualified assessor within your place of work through successful demonstration of the course learning outcome.

VRQs are suitable for learners who want to improve their knowledge and skills in the industry that they are already employed in such as healthcare, childcare or special education. Some courses may have additional entry requirements. Most courses take a maximum of six months to complete and can be started on demand at any time throughout the year. Unless stated, Certificates are offered at Level 2.

“This degree is a fantastic experience. I did consider going to university, but the tuition fees put me off. At the end of the three years, I will have a degree as well as three years work experience, plus no debt and a job. This means I will have a competitive advantage over my peers who went to university.”

FUNDING YOUR STUDIESFu

The table on p.30 details funding available, dependent upon the level of the course you wish to study and your age, based on 2018/19 funding rules.

What it means:

FIRST full level 2 (LE2) If you don’t have a full level 2 qualification or higher, such as 5 GCSEs A*-C /Grade 4-9 or above.

FIRST full level 3 (LE3) If you don’t have a full level 3 qualification or higher, such as 2 or more A Levels or above.

Within this, the funding is split into:

Free You may need to declare your highest level of qualification, give your age, show evidence of particular benefits and/or confirm your employment status.

Subsidised The Government will subsidise particular courses and, therefore, the fee shown already includes the subsidy. You may pay the fee in full or by instalments for courses costing over £100 and lasting for more than 12 weeks. Please note that a £25 admin fee applies to instalment plans.

Student Loan / Full Fees

There is no subsidy or funding for these courses. You may pay the fee in full, by instalments for courses costing over £100 and lasting for more than 12 weeks, or if applicable, apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. You will need to obtain a Learning & Funding information letter when you attend your interview so that you can apply online for the loan. You can also apply for a Higher Education Loan for relevant courses.

www.psc.ac.uk/ahed

Student Loans Company (for Higher Education Courses only)Tuition loans, grants and bursaries are available to all eligible students living in England and studying for their first degree. For further information on student finance packages please visit www.gov.uk/student-finance. Should you require further assistance regarding eligibility and required documentation please contact our Student Support team on 01962 886166, go to our website www.psc.ac.uk/ahed or visit AHEd reception. If you have already studied for a degree, you are unlikely to be eligible for a Student Loan. For tuition fee assistance, some banks offer graduate loans but subject to their own terms & conditions.

Advanced Learner LoansIf you are 19 or over and starting an eligible further education course at Level 3 or above you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It is easy for you to apply for a loan as household income isn’t taken into account and there is no credit check. Importantly you won’t have to pay anything back until your income is over £25,000 a year. Repaying your Advanced Learner Loan is straightforward and your monthly repayments will be based on your income, not what you borrowed. For more information please speak with our Student Support team at reception or visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan.
