History of The Sun News Educational Foundation Scholarship

The Sun News Educational Foundation was founded in 1984 by The Sun News publisher, Michael Pate and other members of the executive staff to promote and encourage technical and academic excellence and advancement among area students, worthy individuals, causes and projects. With its eye on a long-term program for educational development, the Foundation has over the course of its 34 years, provided more than $180,000 in scholarships to high school students within our distribution area of Horry, Georgetown and southern Brunswick counties, recognized influential teachers and most recently, partnered with The Sun News on the Regional Spelling Bee, which hosts approximately 50 local school students who compete to go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Checklist to Complete this Application

Parent or guardian’s signature (this is required even if the student is older than 18) 7. Signature of principal or guidance counselor 8. Application must be received (not postmarked) by March 29, 2019.
