    Introduction► District comprises 7 administrative divisions –

    Mysuru, Tirumakudalu Narasipura, Nanjangud,Heggadadevanakote, Hunsur, Piriyapatna andKrishnarajanagara

    Mysuru district is located in the. It has a prominent place in the history ofKarnataka. Previously known as Mysore state, it was ruled by the Wodeyarsfrom the year 1399 till the independence of India in 1947. Prior to 1998, Mysoredistrict also contained the Chamarajanagar district before that area wasseparated.The original name of the Mysore city was Mahishapura, derived from ademon’s name.

    Mysuru PalaceAmba Vilas, popularlyknown as Mysore Palace, isone of the largest palaces inIndia and the residence ofthe Wodeyar Maharaja ofMysuru. The light and soundshow and palaceillumination during Statefestivals are the keyattractions.

    Chamundeshwari temple is a hilltop shrinesituated on Chamundi hills. It is dedicated togoddess Chamundeshwari Devi and built inDravidian style. Besides this, monolith statueof ‘Nandi’ which is enroute, is also a keyattraction.

    It is one of the tallest and oldestcathedral in India, built inGothic style. It has a crypt thathouses a beautiful statue,acquired from France, of SaintPhilomena, a 3rd century saintfrom Greece.

    It is a beautiful terrace garden developed near the KrishnarajaSagar reservoir. It displays a orientation of Mughal garden andcomprises children park, a fisheries station and hydraulicresearch station. Light and sound show in evening is an addedattraction.

    Chamarajendra ZoologicalGarden, also known asMysuru Zoo, attracts morethan 3 million visitors everyyear. It has a museum, libraryand facilities like batteryoperated vehicles for visitors.
