The TGS1600MD tailgate spreader is a direct drive auger spreader that is designed for theapplication of road salt and sand. It is a high efficiency design that uses a rubber trough and a 6"diameter, 6" pitch auger that yields a compact unit. The stainless steel construction gives a longlasting unit that requires a minimum of maintenence.

The TGS1600MD tailgate spreader installs in the same manner as other tailgate spreaders andshould require the same amount of time and equipment.

The TGS1600MD is supplied with the necessary hardware for mounting the unit. It does not includethe hydraulic hoses, spool valves, or fittings needed to couple the hydraulic system to the truck asrequirements vary too much to make this possible.

TGS-1600 INSTALLATION (MECHANICAL)

The TGS1600MD spreader is strurdy enoughto be lifted using most any method.

We do not suggest that you lift the unit by theauger or that you try to lilft the unit manually.Even though the hydraulic motor and the shaftbearing are rated for enough weight to lift theunit, there is a possibility of impact damage.

Mount the spreader as shown in the above illustration making sure that there is enough room abovethe auger cover plate on the spreader for the tailgate to open and for double acting tailgates to opendown into a completely horizontal position. A 1/2-13" carriage head bolt and a lock nut are providedfor each support strap. We suggest that you bolt the top of the strap to a tab that must be fabricatedand welded to the truck bed. The truck mounting of the hinge mount can be either bolt or welded.

After mounting the unit to the truck, install the spinner assembly. Make sure that the spinner disk isunder the outlet hole in the bottom of the auger boot. The spinner assembly is weighted and doesnot require a stabalizer or self-leveling bracket. Make sure that there is nothing to interfere with thefree movement of the spinner assembly.

Make sure that you have not left any tools or spare parts on the spinner or in the trough beforeproceeding.

TGS-1600 HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS

800-446-9823

Assembly of the TGS-1600 is usually easier if the unit isalready mounted to the dump body of the truck.

Step A:Remove the plugs from the auger motor ports.

Install the two O' ring adapters into the motor ports. Use alight hydraulic oil on the O' rings to lubricate them. Do notuse thread sealant.

Install a 3/4" hose into the adapter on the left hand side ofthe motor. Use thread sealant on this connection.

Install the 20" hose into the adapter on the right hand sideof the motor, also using thread sealant.

Connect the opposite end of the 20" hose to the J.I.C.elbow that is already fastened to the quick disconnectmounted on the spreader frame. The other half of thequick disconnect is supplied and should be connected to a3/4" hose for the pressure line .

Step B:

Step C:

Step D:

Step E:

Connect two 1/2" hoses to the ports on the spinnermotor using thread sealant. Be sure to run the hosesinside of the boxed channel. The hose that isconnected to the port closest to the front of the truckis the pressure hose.

Step F:

Two separate hydraulic circuits are recommended to operate the auger and spinner. This system should allowindividual control of both speed and power to the individual motors. There a numerous methods for connecting the pressure and return hoses to the hydraulic system of the truck. It isrecommended that you use hydraulic quick disconnects so that the entire unit can be easily disconnected from thetruck during servicing. It is important that all hydraulic lines be supported so that they are neither hanging on their own weight or arerubbing against anything. The lines running to the spinner motor must be checked to insure that they do not keepthe spinner assembly from remaining level during the raising of the dump bed. After installing the hoses, open the auger cover and make sure that there is nothing in the trough to interfere withthe auger and open the bottom of the trough to be sure there is no material inside. Close the cover and the troughmaking sure that there will be nothing coming out of the spreader during initial start-up. Also make sure nothing hasbeen left on the spinner and that the spinner itself is securely fastened to the spinner motor.Start the unit and check the hoses and fittings for leaks and that the motors are turning the proper direction.

The TGS1600MD tailgate spreader is a direct drive unit and requires little maintenance. However, there are a few things that can be done to extend the life of the spreader and minimize wear.

After use, the spreader should be thoroughly cleared of all material and cleaned.

The auger bearings should be lubricated at the beginning of each shift with a high grade EP2lubricant. Do not over lubricate. Two strokes of grease from the average hand operated grease gunis sufficient.

Periodically check the auger to boot clearance and adjust as necessary.

If you are spreading material that is particularly course and/or wet, it may be necessary to removethe deflector plate that is located over the auger hole. Other signs that this may be necessary arethe auger stalling or the boot bulging. The drop hole in the boot may also need to be enlarged, butthis should only be done as a last resort and that it not be enlarged over two additional inches indiameter.

The TGS-1600MD spreader can be left on the the back of the truck when not in use in mostapplications, however it can be easily removed if it interferes with a particular operation.

Whether it is left on the truck or stored it is important that it be cleaned and lubricated any time that itwill be out of service for a prolonged period of time. The frame and attaching parts are made ofstainless steel and have excellent corrosive resistance. The auger motor, coupling, auger shaftsand the auger itself are made of carbon steel thus are not rust resistant. You should apply anti-corrosive products to these parts to minimize rust accumulation.

If the unit is to be stored, make sure that the unit is not left resting on the auger boot. This may causepermanent distortion of the boot and possible auger motor or bearing damage. Make sure that allhydraulic lines are capped or plugged to prevent foreign matter entering the system.

We suggest that you keep all attaching parts that you store in one place to minimize the possibility oflosing them and that you do not store the unit in a manner that may constitute a hazard.

If your truck has never never had a tailgate spreader mounted on it in the past, it will be necessary toinstall a set of side spill plates on the tailgate of your truck to keep the material from spilling out thesides of the tailgate when it is open. These spill plates are available from ODB if needed.

The plates are symmetrical so that either plate will fit either side of the tailgate. They should bemounted to the inside face of the tailgate so that they are close to the sides of the dump bed but nottouching and in a location in relationship to the floor that insures minimum clearance while allowingfull operation of the tailgate. The idea is to prevent as much side spillage without hindering the useof the tailgate.

The plate may be bolted or welded to the tailgate once it is located.
