A REVERIE Even in Goa’s most crowded areas such as Calangute, you can find tranquil sanctuaries, if

you know where to look. A Reverie is a fine dining lounge featuring gazebos, garden mounds and water bodies generously placed around. It serves experimental continental food that plays with aroma, texture and flavour, while telling a story or evoking an emotion. Nothing about a meal here is humdrum and the quirky plating makes sure to keep things exciting. Many of the dishes here use techniques of molecular gastronomy. The steaks and meaty mains are hot sellers, but do try The Little BBQ which comprises beef fillet in Goan Bankal teriyaki sauce, soya onion dressing and stir-fried organic rice. Savour the Truffle Truffle dish, a preparation of marbled gougère consisting of brumale black and Piedmont white truffles. Wash it all down with their range of cocktails that use local ingredients such as Goan urrak, kokum, tefla and turmeric leaves.

LA PLAGEThe drive to La Plage, through scenic countryside and along forested hills, is as enchanting as the setting of this 16-year-old beachfront French restaurant that now commands North Goa’s fine dining scene. The charming stretch of beach between Ashwem and Mandrem where it’s located is still, thankfully, less crowded and serene. This sense of calm translates to the interior as well — seating arranged under flouncy beach umbrellas and palm-frond sheds, sand beneath your feet, and colourful drapes dancing in the breeze. La Plage serves an extensive menu of authentic French fare that relies heavily on seafood. Standout dishes include the seared tuna with wasabi mashed potatoes and the fish fillet encrusted with pepper and lime leaves, served with warm white bean salad.

The al fresco seating, replete with lighting and local art, arranged in the shade of overhanging trees, is perfect to enjoy dishes such as the herb-stuffed mackerel wrapped in galangal leaves or the black pomfret cooked in a black bean paste.

ROYAL ENFIELD GARAGE CAFÉOn the bank of Baga River stands a unique establishment that is a mash-up of a full-service restaurant and bar, a bike workshop and showroom, and a museum. While your food is being readied, you can venture out, cocktail in hand, to the museum and feast your eyes on a fascinating collection of Royal Enfield motorcycles that span the pre-war days, all the way to the 21st century. Sift through biking gear at the showroom or watch a motorcycle being customised. The food here is drawn from a well-travelled aesthetic. Sit under a mammoth industrial fan whirling slowly from the high ceiling of the café, and savour dishes such as chicken cigars wrapped in filo pastry, pan-seared prawns and calamari, and spinach and mushroom crepes.

BLACK SHEEP BISTROThere’s nothing pretentious about the two-storey, pale yellow building that houses one of the hottest restaurants in Goa. Neatly placed between crumbling old buildings of busy Panjim, it was once a neglected Portuguese house that has now been lovingly renovated into the Black Sheep Bistro. Much of its original essence has been retained in the small rooms that house the bar and three different dining spaces. The menu here is globally inspired and has been carefully curated by the widely travelled owners, with a farm-to-table approach that ensures that all produce is locally sourced. Hence, you have delightful dishes like Goan chorizo with dark chocolate shavings on home-made poi (Goan bread) from a baker down the street, gnocchi with curried carrots, and pesto-crusted fish made with the fresh catch of the day — all of these dishes pair well with the bistro's range of house-infused gins.

K olkata and its love for sweets go hand in hand — the many, often century-old, sweet shops that line the city's roads are testimony to this fact. Over a century old, Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy should be on your list for traditional sweets such as mishti doi, ras malai and kalakand. If you are in the mood to experiment, sample flavours such as chocolate and black currant. PUTIRAMTucked away in North Kolkata’s Lalbajar area and close to College Square is a sweet shop that has almost remained frozen in time. Regulars will tell you that the interiors haven’t adapted to changing times; thankfully the flavours have stayed consistent too. I recommend stopping here

for breakfast and sampling their Radhaballabhi (luchis or puris stuffed with lentils) and aloo dum. But do make room for their sweet specials like the ras malai or the seasonal Nolen Gur rosogolla. Kick-starting your day with a bowl of mishti doi is absolutely normal — you're in Kolkata, after all.

ADDRESS: 12B, Surya SenSt, Lalbajar, College Square Kolkata 700012

BALARAM MULLICK AND RAJARAM MULLICK (BRM)This iconic sweet brand dates back to 1885. BRM has multiple outlets but it's best to visit the store at Jadubabur Bazar, Bhowanipore, where it all began. The store comes alive during Nolen Gur — that translates to new jaggery season (typically from November to March) where you can buy blocks of jaggery or its liquid version that you can drizzle on your favourite deserts. BRM’s repertoire includes time-tested favourites such as cham cham, scrumptious jhol bhora sondesh and coconut dry laddu and baked mishti doi.

NALIN CHANDRA DAS AND SONSAnother emblematic brand (located in Kalighat’s Lake Market) with a sweet legacy that dates back to the 1840s, Nalin Chandra Das is famous for its

Chandrapuli – a Durga Puja specialty, the scrumptious Kesar Chenna payesh and my favourite, their signature Monohora. There are many legends associated with this sweet that is believed to originate from the small town of Janai. While the classic version features a cardamom-flavoured laddu, I prefer the Nolen Gur version that complements the soft centre.

NEPAL SWEETSAlso known as the Gulab Patti Sandesh shop, this store on Sarat Bose Road in Ballygunge has been drawing customers for its Gulab Patti Sandesh. Each time I’m here, I’m amazed at how light and fresh this version of the sandesh is. It’s encased in a banana leaf and topped with a rose petal. It’s impossible to stop with just one. In case you want to mix things up, you can try their equally delicious Mango or Strawberry Sondesh or if you want a spicy twist try their matar or paneer cutlet.

GIRISH CHANDRA DEY AND NAKUR CHANDRA NANDYHoused in one of North Kolkata’s many heritage buildings, this tiny sweet shop with a 175-year heritage counts foodies, celebrities and die-hard regulars among its clientele. The shop is probably best known for its sandesh which boasts over 50 varieties round the year. They’re equally well known for mishti doi, ras malai and kalakand.

options are equally popular but the one reason I keep going back is probably the best Nolen Gur ice cream in Kolkata. This one’s available through the year.

KONA DUKAN Start your day early, catch a magical sunrise at the Victoria Memorial and then head to Lyons Range, near the Calcutta Stock Exchange. This street comes alive early in the morning with multiple outlets that have perfected the city’s new sweet obsession — malai toast. Most locals will point you to Kona Dukan hidden along the street but almost all these establishments deliver the same quality and keep things simple — crunchy toast crowned with mildly sweet cream or malai that you can wash down with a glass of tea.

In Abu Dhabi, nothing is too far-fetched. A land where sparkling islands harmoniously co-exist

with vast, golden deserts, the jewel of the Persian Gulf proves that it is more than a mere metropolis.

F rom glitzy retail outlets to gigantic skyscrapers dotting its skyline, there is plenty to woo you in Abu Dhabi. But if you are looking for a rather offbeat experience, consider a short trip to one of the many islands that surround the city. AL LULU ISLANDResting along the Corniche, the manmade Al Lulu or Pearl Island pleases tourists with its tranquillity. Speckled with serene waters and date palms, the island is truly a sight to behold. The ongoing construction here has caused ferry services to shut down, thereby reducing the number of visitors to the island. That is why it's not so crowded, making it the perfect place to head to when you want to break away from the crowd or enjoy an intimate picnic with family or friends.

DELMA ISLANDOne of the oldest inhabited islands in Abu Dhabi, Delma was an important part of the UAE’s once-flourishing pearl trade. Today, it teems with quaint shops and cafes. Strewn across the island is a host of historic buildings — including the Al-Meraikhi Old House and the Al-Mohannadi mosque — which provide glimpses of ancient Arabic architecture. Pay a visit to Dalma Museum which has preserved various artefacts found on the island. There are many date juice factories here where you can learn about the desert fruit. The island also houses private farms owned by the city's royal family.

Abu Dhabi’s versatility can be savoured in three ways — on land, by sea and in the desert. The United Arab Emirates' capital is never short of things to do for those looking for a bouquet of experiences to colour their holidays.

    ABU DHABI:

    Text ANANYA BAHL

Abu Dhabi — literally translating to the "Father of the Gazelle” in Arabic — is a city made up of over 200 islands that dot the Persian Gulf. Its sandy terrain, and the fact that it is named after a creature found in the desert, are enough hints of the varied experiences this emirate has to offer. Any holiday itinerary here will easily boast the charms of land-, desert- and sea-based adventures. Abu Dhabi is truly the jack of all trades — and one that masters them all.

Visitors can take a dip in shimmering cerulean waters at the various beaches in Abu Dhabi. Some spots include Yas Beach which is filled with leisure options; Saadiyat Beach, which happens to be a hatching site for hawksbill sea turtles, Mirfa Beach which hosts the annual Al Gharbia Watersports Festival, and Corniche Beach which is located right in the heart of the city.

THE CALL OF THE SEAAbu Dhabi has a sailing history that stretches back to centuries. For those wishing to go sailing, it offers everything from Arabian dhows to catamarans and Toppers. These can be enjoyed at the Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club which has a 100-metre-long beach along the Corniche Breakwater. Apart from sailing classes and renting boats, visitors can also enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, rowing and kayaking.

The Desert Islands Watersports Centre on Sir Bani Yas Island is another place where you can enjoy sailing, sunset cruises and diving expeditions. Explore the surrounding waters on a kayaking tour with Noukhada Adventure Company, which navigates the mangrove forests that are netted around the city's various islands.

Learn about the fascinating story of Abu Dhabi’s pearling industry. Sign up for the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey, a 90-minute tour aboard the Jalboot, a traditional pearling dhow that floats along the channel between Abu Dhabi and Hurriyat islands. The dhow has Arabian floor cushions, traditional Arabic coffee and dates, and features highlights such as Emirati seafaring songs and stories about the history of pearling. For those looking for a more leisurely option, the Al Dhafra Dinner Cruise is a great way to enjoy the charms of Arabian hospitality on a dhow.

    THERE’S ALWAYS ROOM FOR DESERT

Apart from the usual dune bashing and desert safari activities, the Emirate offers other options for some sandy fun. Your first stop should be the Rub' al Khali or the Empty Quarter — the largest, continuous sand desert in the world. world’s tallest sand dune. It is about 300 metres high with a 50-degree incline, making it an apt choice for motor sports. Off-roading expeditions are very popular here, given the large sand mass that is free of blockages.

For wildlife lovers, the Arabian Wildlife Park is a

must-visit. Located on Sir Bani Yas Island, it is home to more than 10,000 creatures of the desert. You can also spot oryxes, gazelles, hyenas, cheetahs and giraffes, among others. There are purpose-built viewing platforms from which visitors can get a closer view. For a night's sojourn, head to Desert Rose Camp or Arabian Nights Village. They are ideal places to enjoy the Bedouin way of life along with some luxurious experiences thrown in for good measure.

of quiet introspection. The mosque’s architecture, a blend of influences from Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan and Egypt, showcases a coming together of Islamic cultures. Capable of accommodating over 40,000 visitors and worshippers, the mosque boasts key architectural highlights, some of which are onion-top domes, reflective pools in the courtyard, the world’s biggest chandelier and carpet (both are handmade), walls adorned with calligraphy and An-Naskh lettering depicting verses from the Quran throughout the mosque.

Head to Saadiyat Island, a cultural zone, which is about seven minutes away from the city's downtown area. Apart from the famed Louvre Abu Dhabi, it is soon going to be the home of the Guggenheim and Zayed National Museum. The Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the region’s first oceanfront golf course. Manarat Al Saadiyat, a centre for art and culture, has a permanent public exhibition, 'The Saadiyat Story', which is a visual retelling of the island’s history.

To get a taste of the buzz that surrounds the city, you can head to Al Maryah Island which

is known to be Abu Dhabi’s central business district. The Galleria located here boasts 130 luxurious shopping and leisure outlets. Reem Island, on the other hand, harbours Abu Dhabi’s iconic Stonehenge-style Gate Towers which are an architectural landmark in the city.

For museum lovers, there is Qasr Al Hosn, which was the King's residence and seat of the government until 1966. The oldest building in Abu Dhabi, it is home to the city's first permanent structure — the watchtower. It houses a museum depicting Abu Dhabi's metamorphosis from

a fishing and pearling village to a modern metropolis.

True to the ever-growing list of things to do in Abu Dhabi is Qasr Al Watan, a palatial structure which is located right next to the Emirates Palace. Offering unique insights into the country's cultural heritage, it throws light on Arabian craftsmanship, calligraphy and the city's past rulers; the library and the sound and light show are some other noteworthy highlights here.

Whether you choose any one terrain or a mix of all, Abu Dhabi will delight you in many ways, ensuring that you come back for more.

T he beauty of Thailand is that it is an amazing destination to visit in both, high and low seasons. While peak tourist

activities and experiences, there is much to be enjoyed even during low season. In addition to the weather being much more pleasant, there are price reductions when it comes to hotels and activities. Moreover, there are lesser tourists at most venues, making it less crowded at popular attractions, allowing you to enjoy the destination at a leisurely pace.

For those wishing to make the most of this, there is no better time than the present to visit Phuket, one of Thailand’s most popular and pristine islands. It is a great idea, specially, for those looking for a short and sweet

getaway: one that is marked by colourful vistas, the azure ocean, nature at its bountiful best and fresh island air. Isn’t it truly magnificent that one can savour not just all of these beautiful things but also the serenity of a tourist-free low season in one destination? According to the AirVisual app, pollution level in Mumbai is “moderate” at 96 US Air Quality Index (AQI), while Bengaluru and New Delhi are “unhealthy for sensitive groups” at 143 US AQI and “unhealthy” at 156 US AQI respectively.

In comparison, Phuket is “good” with a green badge at only 37 US AQI. The island definitely provides an escape from the high pollution levels of these Indian metro cities. A weekend here gives visitors the opportunity to recharge their cells and return to work and life with much gusto and renewed energy.

Once in Phuket, there’s no place like the Royal Phuket Marina for a weekend vacation. If the island itself is packed with so many wonders, then this leisure complex on its eastern coast is a one-stop shop for all things fantastic. Recipient of the 5 Gold Anchor Award by the British Yacht Harbour Association, this world-class destination boasts luxury living coupled with various leisure experiences. This makes it the perfect spot to head to either with family, kids, friends or even as a couple. There is no shortage of things to do and in fact, you may even feel that a weekend getaway is too short to experience everything on offer.

Checking into the Royal Phuket Marina means luxe waterfront accommodation, a soothing swimming pool, Kids Club, and lots more for an entertaining weekend. Here is an outline of the Royal Phuket Marina’s weekend package that is designed to provide guests with an entertaining and leisure-filled short getaway.

DAY 1On arrival, guests can check in to their choice of accommodation. These are the two- and three-bedroom apartments that are available for rent. They are perfect for groups of friends and mid- and large-size families, especially those travelling with kids.

These properties are restful abodes and offer perfect respite for travel-weary guests. After ample relaxation, how about some rejuvenation? For this, the Golden Spa Phuket is the place to be. Foot massages, hot stone therapies with custom blended oil, ancient Thai massages, herbal baths, wraps and scrubs are offered here. The idea is to sit back, relax and let the experts in wellness take over!

DAY 2Once the fatigue of travel has passed, it is best to take advantage of the many attractions in Phuket. The Royal Phuket Marina is the starting point for boat excursions to the James Bond and Phi Phi Islands. The

It is famous for its limestone outcroppings in the emerald-shaded waters of the bay. The Phi Phi Islands are a group of islands, cliffs and gorgeous beach-front jungles. The Maya Bay, found in this cluster, has been featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer The Beach. The setting of this bay formed the backdrop of this movie and we aren’t surprised why: even a glimpse showcases its tremendous beauty! Both offer gorgeousness and that amazing allure of an island far, far away. The islands are must-visits on any Phuket itinerary.

DAY 3This day must be reserved for relaxation at the Marina. For those wishing to head out, the various markets and malls of Phuket are located close by. You can also opt for the pool deck apartments which give direct access to the tranquil swimming pool space in the Royal Phuket Marina. After the day’s activities, the evening calls for drinks at the Speakeasy Yacht Club at the Royal Phuket Marina. The bar is a 21st-century interpretation of America’s Prohibition Era and is modelled on the country’s ethos in the 1920s and 1930s. This era signalled the birth of jazz music and featured the drinking of a lot of bourbon, both of which are served at the Speakeasy. The bar is the best place to enjoy a sundowner that goes on well into the night, as revellers are treated to old-

world charm as well as the contemporary backdrop of the Marina. The view from the Speakeasy is one that spells indulgence and “the good life” as you sip your drink and look out at villas elegantly perched on the coast and yachts bobbing on the ocean against the gloriously setting sun.

NATURE'S BOUNTY Oman has an impressively diversified landscape — from turquoise beaches and mighty mountains to labyrinthine wadis (valleys), it is a storehouse of natural wonders.

The massive limestone mount Jebel Misht, one of the largest of its kind in the country, is a dream destination for mountaineers across the world. Reaching a height of more than 1,000 feet, the mount harbours the rare Arabian tahr goat.

Situated some 200 km from Muscat, Wadi Bani Khalid is among the top geological wonders in Oman. It is a tranquil oasis where sparkling green waters are hemmed

by swaying date palms and sprawling gorges. Ras al-Jinz, on the other hand, bears a unique landscape, comprising the turquoise Al Jinz beach and myriad rock formations dotted along the shore. The site is also well-known as the

    breeding ground of green turtles.

Similarly, Dalkut is a marvellous seaside spot which falls west of Salalah. Ride through the winding mountain roads before you reach the main cliffside. As

you walk towards the misty mountains, you will hear the unmistakable rumble of waves lashing against the rocks. You have to be precariously close to these cliffs to experience the sheer beauty of the sea, which gets a little rough during monsoons.

A visit to Muscat is incomplete without a jaunt to Muttrah, a quaint port town which was once the commercial headquarters of Oman. Stroll through the walkway skirting the port or climb the hillock to the seaside Muttrah Fort for a view over the Corniche. Those with adventure in their blood can also opt for the Riyam Park trek.

PRE-HISTORIC WONDERSThe country was once a thriving trade hub which had ties with the Sumerians of Mesopotamia and the Indus people, among many others. The land, which was called Magan in Sumerian cuneiform texts, was a source of copper and diorite.

Take a trip down south to Salalah in the Dhofar region to delve into the history of the region's once-flourishing frankincense trade. It is particularly evident in the remains of the ancient port named Khor Rori, which dates back to the late first century BC. The sweet aroma of frankincense from the port, which is the land of frankincense trees even today, is said to have lured traders from far and wide. Khor Rori is also a testament to Oman’s

proud heritage of being a land of expert seamen, whose exploits have been legendary — think of the adventures of the fictional Sindbad the Sailor (an Omani who was said to have been born in Sohar) found in Arabian Nights.

Equally unmissable are the Bat and Al-Ayn necropolises, and the beehive tombs surrounding them. The view of these hill-top structures with Jebel Misht in the backdrop is one to cherish. Located

WELL-DISPOSED CULTUREThe most endearing quality of Oman is the friendly and hospitable nature of its people. You will rarely find an Omani who wouldn’t greet you with a warm smile, even if you are just passing each other by on a street.

Though oil wealth has made Oman a rich nation, the country keeps ostentatious show of wealth at bay. There are barely any sky-high buildings in Oman — the tallest being the ten-storey Sheraton Hotel at Ruwi. All major modern landmark constructions assimilate traditional aspects to seamlessly blend the best of different eras.

It is this simplicity, the alluring natural beauty, the ancient stories and above all, the welcoming people that make Oman a cultural gem. Se

The verdant landscapes of this hill station in Kerala will completely make you forget about the gruelling heat of summer. Treat yourself to a hot cup of India’s favourite brew at one of the many breathtaking tea estates. Parallelly, the array of tea factories here offers a chance to learn about the history and science behind the plant. Once here, make sure to watch the process behind the cultivation and manufacturing

of the brew at Lockhart Tea Factory, and learn interesting facts about Munnar’s tea heritage at the Tea Museum. Not a fan of tea? Head to Eravikulam National Park, where you can spot the rare Nilgiri tahr along with other fascinating fauna such as elephants, sambar deer and gaur at close quarters.

    SHIMLA: PAST MEETS PRESENT

Shimla ensures that you escape the scorching sun without compromising on material comforts. Nestled in Himachal Pradesh, this town boasts a panoramic view of snow-clad mountains. But that’s not it — thanks to its pleasant climes which were a far cry from the rest of India's weather, Shimla was also the preferred Summer Capital of the British Raj.

The Englishmen have long since departed the country, but evidence of their stay lingers on in the form of charming colonial architecture and sprawling English gardens. The elegant Christ Church, with its neo-Gothic architecture, makes for a must-visit here. Once you’ve had your fill of history, take a leisurely walk along Mall Road, the town’s car-free promenade. Time your visit so you can savour the Shimla Summer Festival, when the town is transformed into a sea of colour, with flower shows, cultural performances and local tradition on full display.

Thorny shrubs jut their prickly heads in some stretches. The ribbon-thin Shyok River outlining the desert often receives some thirsty visitors — the double-humped Bactrian camels.

Centuries ago, these camels had travelled kilometres on the legendary Silk Route which connected Europe to China. They are native to the Steppe region of Central Asia and are also found in China’s Gobi Desert. In Nubra Valley, the camels are domesticated by locals and are utilised to offer joyrides to tourists.

The footsteps of the camel caravan storm up clouds of sand. Led by their herders, they leisurely march eastwards. The evening is progressing fast. Performers clad in golden-hemlined red robes with fur trimmings perform Shondol, a song and dance practised on the concluding day of Losar, the New Year festival. Mentok Stanmo, the most popular dance in Nubra Valley, is typically performed to greet the onset of the summer season, during which flowers, accompanied by song and dance, are offered at monasteries. Four women wearing cylindrical winged hats sing in chorus with a bouquet of flowers in their hands, whilst tapping their feet in tune with the slow dance. Zangskari is a tribute to nature — it is performed to thank Mother Earth who provides them with cattle, meadows and pleasant weather. In the last performance, modern dance, the audience is invited to join in for a Bollywood score.
