Students created a model of the Solar System using coding with Tynker. We participated in two webinars with the California Academy of Science. Learn about engaging and motivating apps and tools that make entering the world of VR in elementary school easily accessible for all grades. Students in grade 5 will demonstrate how they use VR tools such as Merge Cube and CoSpaces to learn about their world in 3D. VR is possible in almost any grade or subject. Seventh-grade students made a multimedia interactive jeopardy game using cross-curricular content and fun trivia questions. Students wrote and hyperlinked the questions and answers, chose their own graphics, and inserted transitions between each question. Students then quizzed each other to assess content knowledge. Table 10: Interactive Video for a Mobile Studio, MakerSpace or STREAM Lab St. Louise de Marillac Catholic School • Diocese of Pittsburgh • Pittsburgh, PA

Students in grades 7 & 8 will present how they use TouchCast, a FREE iPad app, to create multimedia projects which includes green screen effects, lower thirds, whiteboards, annotation tools, multi camera features, and VAPPS-video apps. Students and teachers can add poll questions, live social media feeds, websites, images, and more to create interactive media. The students collaborate to film school events and create cross curricular projects for our morning announcements, special news features, weather reports, class projects, and more that can be shared with a global audience. Students will also share tips as well as video equipment, microphones, lights, and other apps that enhance production quality for video. All examples can be adapted for use with elementary to high school level. Using an iPad and the TouchCast App makes it possible to create a mobile video studio or a video recording area for a MakerSpace or STREAM Lab.

Table 11: Engaging English Students with PBLAs

Council Rock High School North • Council Rock School District • Newtown, PA This book is so boring! Technology integration allows this familiar English student battle cry to be turned into a problem based learning activity. Through the use of avatars and screencasting tools, students collaborate to rewrite classic literature making the story more interesting for them while developing some valuable 21st Century skills.

Tables 16: Game Design Challenge & 17 Mifflin County High School • Mifflin County School District • Lewistown, PA Computer Aided Drafting and 3D Modeling II students were challenged to create a personalized version of a 2D or 3D board game while implementing skills garnered in the prerequisite course. Game designs were required to follow the design process, while using AutoCad and Adobe Illustrator to create 2D designs for laser engraving and AutoDesk Inventor to create 3D models for 3D printing. Lewistown Intermediate School • Mifflin County School District • Lewistown, PA Our 5th grade library students used Pixel Art to showcase symbols, setting, and/or the plot of books they read. They also completed a series of challenges proposed by the teacher and other classmates. The students created their pixel art in Google Sheets. The first step was to create a company that would help society in a positive way. Next students designed a flyer that incorporated an original logo. The last step was to create a short commercial promoting their company. Tables 21: Design Challenge - Laser Cut Train Cars & 22 Mifflin County High School • Mifflin County School District • Lewistown, PA Computer Aided Drafting and 3D Modeling I students were challenged to create a wooden multicar train. For this assignment, students worked as a team to design and identify key characteristics between individual train cars. Using this information individual students designed, prototyped and finalized their train car designs. Students were evaluated on their ability to work as a team, collaborate, utilize the design process, apply drafting and design skills and manipulate machinery in a safe and appropriate manner. The site is complete with information regarding their experience and the camp in general, external links and of course photo galleries of their environmental outdoor adventure. The culminating activity was a presentation using Chatterpix Kids. Students took pictures of their completed projects and recorded themselves explaining important facts and new learning about seeds and plants. Table 26: Catch the Burglar

Montgomery Elementary School • Montgomery Area School District • Montgomery, PA Fourth graders from the Montgomery Area Elementary School have created an interactive maze for their peers using Dash, the robot. Students have incorporated metric measurement and coding to program Dash to move specific distances and directions. The objective is for Dash to move through the maze and capture the burglar. Students used their problem solving skills to help Dash be successful. Our Klinger morning news crew delivers middle school news to our school. We broadcast everything from news & sports to birthdays, lunch and even a joke or two each day. Our students are a select group of 8th graders who have been proven to be trustworthy and reliable. The curriculum areas covered are reading, language arts and technology. The Academic Literacy students were asked to create a movie trailer based on a self-selected book they had read for class. These eighth grade students were given limited guidelines and were allowed to use a multimedia approach to create their trailers. Klinger MS and William Tennent HS • Centennial School District • Southampton, PA Middle school students are learning about the manufacturing process by designing and building custom skis and snowboards. These students are working in a mobile manufacturing lab to build and learn. Our high school students are running a business out of this mobile manufacturing lab. Students are taking client orders and producing custom skis and snowboards. Our high school students are running all aspects of this manufacturing business from marketing and finances to design and manufacturing. Fourth grade students at Lenkerville Elementary become published authors this year in writing class. First, they collaborated to write narrative stories. Then they typed the stories and added illustrations and backgrounds using the website, www.storyjumper.com. Last, they were able to purchase their books. They are proud authors in 4th grade!

Our TV Production group consists of 45 third and fourth graders. They write, produce, film and edit segments to be shown to the whole school highlighting activities, events or topics of interest. The students run the entire production with the teacher supporting only as needed. We use this club to teach the students about writing for an audience and for a purpose. The program also teaches the students about presenting to others and making it interesting. They are enhancing their research skills. During the showcase, the students will be interviewing and sharing some of their work.

Table 40: Myers FABLAB: Makedo Construction Tools Myers Elementary • Cheltenham School District • Elkins Park, PA

Children learn to be critical thinkers by doing, creating and experimenting. When allowed to explore ideas in an open-ended way, students gain a deeper understanding of skills and concepts and how to apply them in real-life situations. Students in Grades 2-4 are using the engineering design process and Makedo Construction Tools to ask, plan, create, analyze and improve upon designs based upon literature, math, science and social studies themes and concepts as well as student interests. Upon completion of a project, students will write about, upload photos and/or videos, and share their work on a blog called FABLAB, which is a tab on the Myers School Website. Myers Elementary is a K- 4 suburban school just north of Philadelphia serving about 350 students. Our makerspace, or FABLAB, is open to all students to encourage critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.

Table 48: Remembering the USAT Dorchester Father Judge High School • Archdiocese of Philadelphia • Philadelphia, PA

Our presentation highlights the engineering processes and technologies used to construct a scale model from the keel up of the USAT Dorchester, a World War II troop transport. Using a blueprint of the ship class and by making measurements of a model of the ship, our students have used the principles of naval architecture and 3D printing technology. They created line drawings including a body plan that served as a starting point for designing the parts using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) program. The motors for the moving parts and lights are controlled by a microcontroller programmed by engineering students. Voice assistants are all the rage. Move over Siri, students can now code and customize their own Alexa and Google Assistant solutions for use in the classroom and at home. High school computer science students and WyoInnovators.com club members demonstrate how they apply this exciting technology to solve real-world problems. They also explain the steps and materials that others can follow to build their own custom voice assistant.
