Celebrating 25 Years of Young Design TalentIn 1990 the NHMA Board of Directors established one $2,500 scholarship for a talentedindustrial design student to encourage interest in the housewares industry. In 1993, this one
scholarship was replaced by a competition, created to invigorate the industry with the fresh ideas of topstudent designers.
Each year at the Show’s student competition display, the winners meet business leaders and news mediaand their product concepts inspire new thinking. Winners have created careers in the housewares industryand others have become entrepreneurs, educators and design managers for consumer productscompanies or retailers.
IHA’s competition is unique in the U.S. as the longest-running, industry-sponsored, merit-recognition programfor industrial design students. It is hailed as a model for other student competitions and is recognized by thedesign profession for its contribution to education.

Judging was such a great opportunity. Itis inspiring to see the work of thedifferent schools and good to know that
materials and manufacturing are universalissues. I enjoyed insights from the colleagueson the panel who are from many differentindustries. Even though we have diverseexperiences, we come together and agreeon the strongest work. We live in and play in a world offuzzy problems, as several of the top projects showed.
