MT MEE GARDEN CLUB

The last Garden Club meeting was held at the Garden Gems

Nursery at Burpengary on the 10th

August. We were fortunate to

have Russell Young speak to the group about a huge range of

plants. Russell gave us many pointers on how we can plant and

design a garden using colour and variation. Russell was incredibly

knowledgeable about which plants do better in different areas,

care of these plants, when and how to prune…... all information

that is so important when we are trying to plan the “perfect

garden”.

Russell is very passionate about all things gardening and is so

interesting to listen to that you can’t help but get caught up with

his enthusiasm. I think that the purchases that were made on the

day were proof of that !!!

Our next meeting will be held on Friday the 14th

September

Where: Brush Turkey Enterprises

Address: 468 Reeseville Rd, Reeseville (near Maleny)

(Next door to Manfreds Wood and Antiques)

Parking: Down the Driveway, there is plenty of on- site parking.

(The driveway will be highlighted with some balloons)

Time:11am on site

Hosts and Owners: Karen & Spencer Shaw

Heart Nursery, Maleny – see website for background. Forest Heart

specialise in the restoration and protection of the diverse rainforest

ecosystems that occur in South East Queensland.

propagation, care and pruning of native plants. There will be

plants for sale on the day

Car Pooling from the hall at 10am

More Info: You can take the back road (if you choose to) off

Stanley River Rd, this is Burnett Lane which comes onto Reeseville

Rd. This is a shorter way, with the road being more narrow and a

bit windier than the main road.

events. Fingers crossed we are successful with the grant.

MUSEUM ON MOUNT MEE: Members are still working towards the museum becoming a reality.

Without the assistance of Ceccato Hall + Associates, Architects, the journey to the final product would be a

much bigger challenge. Thanks Joe Ceccato and your team. There is still a call out there for any tradies who

can donate some time or materials we would like to hear from you. All donations are tax deductible. There

are more grants to apply for to cover some of the costs of building our museum.

Once again, many thanks to those people who support our stall at the monthly Mt Mee Markets. It is

Neighbourhood Safer Place – Mount Mee

As a resident of Mount Mee are you interested in your community having a dedicated Neighbourhood Safer

Place or Evacuation Building? Dayboro district has their own site and it is available to the public to use in

times of extreme events i.e. bushfire, cyclone, extreme wet or windy weather, tanker roll over, terror attack

etc. Here is an extract from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) website regarding a

‘Neighbourhood Safer Place’ (NSP) – see link below.

The 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission Interim report recommended that people need a range of

options to increase their safety in the event of bushfire. QFES recommend that all people living in a

bushfire prone area have a personal Bushfire Survival Plan.

When a bushfire threatens, whether your decision is to leave early or stay and defend your property, you

should use an NSP only in the event that your Bushfire Survival Plan fails. In other words, an NSP is a

place of last resort.

An NSP is a local open space or building where people may gather, as a last resort, to seek shelter from a

bushfire. Use of an NSP may be your contingency plan when:

Your Bushfire Survival Plan has failed.

Your plan was to stay but the extent of the fire means that your home cannot withstand the impact of

the fire and therefore your home is not a safe place to shelter.

The fire has escalated to an `extreme` or `catastrophic` level and voluntary evacuation is your safest

option.

The main purpose of an NSP is to provide some level of protection to human life from the effects of a

bushfire. Your NSP will not guarantee safety in all circumstances. End of extract.

If you would like more information or you have any suggestions to add please contact Jeanette Stone via

email: [email protected])

DID YOU KNOW…….

1945 Percy Spencer discovered the cooking properties of the microwave

after noticing that a chocolate bar in his pocket melted while he was working

with a radar set. He tried cooking popcorn, then an egg which exploded.

Eventually he fed the electromagnetic field into a metal box and blasted food

with microwaves inside.

The microwave oven was born!

HELLO FROM HBO (News from the Hall Bookings Officer on comings and goings at the Mt Mee Public Hall)

Normally we have enough to do promoting our own lovely hall but this month there are a couple of forthcoming events happening

elsewhere to which I would like to draw your attention.

MARKET STALL SUCCESS WORKSHOP

In this workshop, presenter Janmaree Lowe, founder of Love Handmade Markets, will share her expert knowledge on what makes

a successful market stall.

This workshop would certainly be of interest to our monthly Market Day stallholders but may also be timely for anyone intending

to take advantage of the Historical Society’s Garage Sale on 22nd

and 23rd

of September, and/or stallholders planning to set up

shop at the Mt Mee Twilight Christmas Market to be held on Friday, 30th

November. And it is certainly not too soon to be

thinking about Christmas. The Garage Sale and Mt Mee Twilight Christmas Market are perfect occasions for crafters and artisans

to sell their products to folk looking to find unique, hand-crafted gifts for friends and family. Janmaree has all the tips and tricks to

help market stallholders get the most bang for their buck (and time).

Topics covered will include:

Matching product to the consumer market

Stock preparation and display

Strategies to connect and interact with your customers and promote your product.

Janmaree has been curating stylish markets (including the very popular Samford Handmade Market) since 2013 so she knows

what she’s talking about when it comes to setting benchmark standards in market presentation and customer experience. This

workshop is suitable for crafters, artists, and makers of all kinds, and provides a great opportunity to learn from an artworker with

considerable experience in the field.

TINY HOUSE WORKSHOP

If, like Virginia Woolf, you hanker after a room of one’s own where your creative spirit can run free (and you can be as messy as

you like), or if you’re tapping in to the zeitgeist of sustainable living and would like to tread more lightly on our beleaguered

planet then this workshop might be for you.

Fred Schultz is the brains behind Tiny House Workshops. In his own words his mission is “to build and assist others in the

building of Tiny Houses that by their roadworthiness, size, and design for the Australian climate will naturally inspire and liberate

people out of conventional mortgage servitude and into an expansion of free time, the arts, and a deepening connection to the

earth.”

Page 10: 2018 September Mountain Musings · 2018. 8. 28. · 2018 September 3 | P a g e m t m e e h a l l @ m o r e t o n b a y . q l d . g o v . a u Bring morning tea & cup No need for chairs

And what’s not to love about the versatility of a tiny house. It can be relocated should you need to move house. It could be added

to your property as an Airbnb to earn extra income, or for all of the usual reasons we have for extending your homes: for friends &

family to stay over, as a teenage retreat, as accommodation for ageing parents, or as studio/office space so you can work from

home or have a dedicated workshop or art studio.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in knowing more about then the Ningi Community Hall is the place to be on

the weekend of September 15 and 16 when Fred Schultz will be conducting a series of Tiny House workshops in our neck of the

woods.

Finally, the hunt is on for a new Bookings Officer for the Mt Mee Hall. As you would be aware, the Mt Mee Public Hall

Association manages the Hall on behalf of the building’s owner - Moreton Bay Regional Council. The Bookings Officer is one of

many voluntary roles undertaken by members of the Mt Mee Public Hall Association to facilitate usage of the Hall in order to

provide financial return to the Mt Mee community. The Bookings Officer manages the bookings of wedding hirers, community

groups who use the Hall for regular meetings, the Mt Mee State School, and individual hirers who book the Hall for various one-

off functions throughout the year. I use a nice little software package to help keep track of all aspects of the bookings process so

experience using any small business program e.g. MYOB would be an advantage but certainly not essential. Basic computer

literacy is sufficient.

The current bookings officer is looking to waft off and smell a few more roses but will be on hand to guide and help the new

person until they settle into the job. Anyone interested in taking on this rewarding job can call me, or Anne Pedwell (5498 2154).

I shall leave the last word to one of the best recruiters in the business, Winston Churchill:

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”
