2018 SEASON RECAP The University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team finished the 2018 season with a final record of 7-6-1, finishing iourth in the the Canada West Pacific division. The Vikes scored the third-most goals within their division with 29 through 14 regular season games. The team’s explosive offence led by forward Georgia Bignold, who scored a team-high eight goals for the Vikes, played a key role in the team clinching a play-off spot.
Victoria also enjoyed standout seasons from fourth years Kiara Kilbey and Rachel Baird. Both Kilbey and Baird finished second and third, respectively, in team scoring behind Bignold. Katie Carrothers played a consistent and reliable defensive game all season in what was her last year in a Vikes uniform and earned a Canada West Second Team All-Star selection. 2017 U SPORTS First Team All Star goalkeeper Puck Louwes postedfive shutouts and started all 14 regular season games while recording a 1.29 goals-against-average. Victoria concluded their regular season schedule with a huge home 2-1 victory over the eventual U SPORTS silver medalists from Trinity Western.
The Vikes season had many highlights including a four-goal weekend for Baird on Oct. 13-14. Victoria earned two consecutive 4-0 victories over the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies while on the road. Baird scored two goals in each game and had her recognized as Canada West First Star of the Week and U SPORTS Female Athlete of the Week.
Victoria entered the 2018 playoffs as the fourth seed in the Pacific division and was matched up against the Saskatchewan Huskies in the play-in round. After the Vikes had controlled the pace of the game for the majority of the first half, it was the Huskies that scored first after a favourable bounce went Saskatchewan’s way. The Huskies added a second goal before time was up and eliminated the Vikes from the playoffs with a 2-0 victory in Calgary.
