2018 Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation Board of Directors

Reflections from Our Outgoing ChairmanMorton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation Supporters,As I look back over my two-year term as chairman of Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation, I’m grateful to have worked alongside this community to achieve several major milestones over the past year.■  Mease Countryside Hospital continues to move forward with

their expansion of the four-story Bilheimer Tower, recognizing the generous gift from Nancy and David Bilheimer, that will include 104 private patient rooms, a new endoscopy unit, critical care services and women’s services renovations.

■  We saw overwhelming generosity in support of our Nursing Excellence Campaign, which has raised more than $2 million to transform the Sally L. Bailey Nursing Education Center on the Mease Dunedin Hospital campus.

■  Neurosurgeons at Morton Plant Hospital started using the new iMRI (interoperative magnetic resonance imaging), made possible through a generous gift from Kate Tiedemann, which allows surgeons to scan a patient during surgery, providing them with instant feedback.

■  We granted more than $1 million to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital to help them purchase a new MRI and build out an expanded radiology reading room in their imaging suite.

■  We have continued our commitment to fund cutting-edge, innovative technology by providing funding for Tru-D® Disinfection Systems at all four hospitals of Morton Plant Mease and the Madonna Ptak Rehabilitation Center at Morton Plant. These systems deliver an automated, measured dose of UVC light to help kill deadly pathogens and common health care-associated infection culprits throughout an entire operating room.

This Philanthropy Report is created for you – to review how your investment in your hospitals is serving the needs of your community. During my past two years as chairman, I’ve been honored to steward your gifts, ensuring that each dollar is used effectively. As you’ll see, our board of directors, along with the health system, adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights. You, as a philanthropist in our organization, are assuring the well-being of our community and investing in its future – providing extraordinary health care to your families, friends and neighbors. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. With great appreciation,

Earle S. Cooper | Outgoing Chairman, Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation

Letter from the President and CEODear Friends,I hope the new year is off to a great start for you. Here, we’re still flying high from our historic success in 2018, thanks to you, your families, your neighbors and your friends. We’re so fortunate to have a community who cares so deeply about investing in the hospitals that care for them.

In fact, while we talk about fund-raising and numbers rather frequently, these figures are merely

the outcome of our more fulfilling mission. Thankfully, our responsibility spans a greater purpose that we can celebrate far beyond fund-raising and campaign goals. Together, we were able to grant the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease $8 million last year to fund innovative technology and essential health care programs, keeping our patient care on the cutting-edge for today and tomorrow.

Being a part of our community means you have a network of friends and neighbors who care deeply about each other and understand the importance of investing in the health and wellness of all the members of our community.

Our hospitals’ extraordinary team of physicians, nurses, administrators, team members and volunteers, and our foundation team, are there for you during the most difficult times in your lives, such as an illness, major surgery, the loss of a loved one, as well as during the happiest times, like when a healthy child is born.

Throughout my 18 years at Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation, including the past six as president and CEO, I take profound pleasure in meeting and interacting with grateful community members, as well as our amazing health care team who deliver extraordinary patient care every day.

Your acts of kindness to help patients and the clinical teams throughout our hospitals provide great inspiration to us all, and it drives us even harder to do our very best for each patient that passes through our doors. Thank you for your tremendous support.

Forever grateful,

Ernestine Morgan, CFREPresident and CEO, Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation

Mease Countryside Hospital Begins Major ExpansionIn honor of Nancy and David Bilheimer’s extraordinary gift, Mease Countryside Hospital is in the midst of a major expansion project that will create a more connected hospital campus by adding a four-story parking garage with an elevated pedestrian walkway and the four-story Bilheimer Tower that will add 104 private patient rooms.

Focused on enhancing patient-centered care and the family experience, the hospital’s ambitious expansion is designed to create continuous platforms of care that support clinical excellence. Patient and visitor comfort is also part of the new design, featuring an outdoor courtyard with dining and seating areas, a children’s play space and a water feature offering visitors a respite area that incorporates natural elements.

What Philanthropy Means to MeWe asked four supporters of Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation to weigh in on a single topic: Philanthropy.

Nicole Szell, DOUrologist, Advanced Urology InstituteWhen I was in medical school at Michigan State, I was frequently asked, “Why do you want to be a doctor?” I think for most young aspiring physicians, many shared the sentiment of just wanting to help people feel better and get back to living their normal lives. Obviously as doctors, we’re all inspired

to help people. However, this desire to help others needs to extend outside the clinic and hospital and extend into the community through philanthropy. We don’t just help people as doctors, we help them as volunteers in the community as well. That’s what being a physician is all about! As a urologist, it’s been an honor to be involved with the Foundation’s Rock the Ribbon race to help raise support and awareness of prostate and breast cancer in the communities we serve.

Lou Galdieri, RN, MHAPresident, Morton Plant HospitalSVP, BayCare Market Leader for North Pinellas/West PascoI give because I care. I care because I give. I believe that leaders need to set an example, whether it be in the boardroom or the community. I’m inspired and motivated daily by our extraordinary team who truly cares about not only our

patients and loved ones, but serving the needs of each other. As executive champion of our annual Caring for Our Community team member giving campaign the past few years, I’m proud to be involved in something special that celebrates our hospitals’ long-standing culture of philanthropy and reaffirms our commitment to improving the health and well-being of our patients, community and Morton Plant Mease family.

Candace GlewenChair, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital Board of DirectorsPhilanthropy means helping others, often those you don’t know and when they’re not expecting it. I’ve lived in the Morton Plant North Bay Hospital community for 30 years and it’s nice to help your neighbors in need. I became involved with Women in Philanthropy

because I love the idea of the grant requests coming directly from team members. It’s refreshing to learn what they think is important to the hospital and be able to work together with others to directly meet that need. Women in Philanthropy is uniting women of like mind and spirit, and we hope others will see the greatness of pulling your resources together to help your community.

Lang Lin, MDCardiologist, BayCare Medical GroupPhilanthropy is defined as “altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by financial gifts or work to help persons in need, through endowments of institutions and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes.” As physicians, we’re

concerned for our patient’s welfare and contribute to medical advancement daily. We donate in many ways – with our time, hard work, our life, talent and skills. As a cardiologist, making a gift through a deferred charitable gift annuity to benefit superior cardiac care for our patients and our community has always been very near and dear to my heart.

Connected with Our CommunityPhilanthropy is based on voluntary action for the public good. Gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations have a profound impact on the ability of our hospitals to carry out their mission. We appreciate the generosity of all community members who have helped support one of our fundraising events over the past year. These events present an opportunity to not only raise important resources, but bring greater awareness to the programs we support.

Transforming Health Care through PhilanthropyLooking back at 2018, thanks to the community’s philanthropic generosity, it was quite an extraordinary year that included granting your not-for-profit hospitals of Morton Plant Mease $8 million to fund 35 programs and 22 capital projects. Your gifts continue a legacy of excellence and contribute to life-saving programs and technologies that have revolutionized patient care.

Morgan Heart HospitalMore than 1,200 donors stepped up to help raise $7 million for the Morgan Heart Hospital Community Challenge. Campaign support will help renovate the hospital’s electrophysiology lab and catheterization lab, as well as build an additional hybrid operating room for our team of expert cardiovascular specialists.

Morton Plant North Bay HospitalMore than $1 million was granted to Morton Plant North Bay Hospital to help purchase a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and build out an expanded radiology reading room in their imaging suite. The new MRI produces higher quality, higher resolution images for doctors, thanks to its more powerful magnet.

Cancer CareThrough heartfelt community support, the Foundation provides funding for nearly 10 programs aimed at granting a renewed sense of possibility to survivors and their loved ones. These initiatives encompass every moment that cancer touches people’s lives, from prevention and diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.

Patient CareOur hospitals are steadfast in their commitment to achieving compassionate, clinical excellence. Philanthropy helps attract, reward, recognize and retain talented nurses, provide them the tools to enhance their learning, offer professional development programs and distinguish our nurses as leaders.

Family Care FundThe Family Care Fund helps our own team members at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease with financial assistance when an unexpected emergency occurs in their lives. Last year, the fund approved 100 requests for assistance and provided nearly $125,000 to team members who had nowhere else to turn.

Tru-D® Disinfection Thanks to community support, six Tru-D disinfection systems were purchased for our hospitals and the Madonna Ptak Rehabilitation Center. These systems deliver an automated, measured dose of UVC light to help kill deadly pathogens and common health care-associated infection culprits throughout an entire patient room or operating room.

Spirituality and HealingOur Palliative Care program offers a holistic approach to relieving the pain, suffering and stress for patients experiencing chronic illness with emotional, psychosocial and spiritual support. The focus of this approach is on providing compassionate, specialized attention to the needs of patients and their families.

Volunteer ServicesWe’re grateful to our volunteers for helping us meet the needs of our visitors every day. Philanthropy helps fund many volunteer initiatives, including its van transportation service that provides free transportation to and from medical appointments, as well as rides for patients being discharged from the hospital.

Physician EducationWe’re proud to honor our medical staff for their dedication and commitment to providing outstanding care. Our community helps fund the Family Medicine Residency program at the Turley Family Health Center that provides physician education and clinical training for 24 residents each year.

Grateful Patient Stories from the Heart

Mease Countryside Hospital

3231 McMullen Booth Road

Safety Harbor

It’s not possible to choose

just one team member to recognize for taking

such great care of me during my visit to Mease

Countryside Hospital. Every team member I came

across during my stay treated me with the utmost

care, with genuine concern for my health, safety and

well-being. In fact, I’m compelled to also thank the

leaders who create such a compassionate culture.

Those responsible for training all the hospital’s nurses

and caregivers also deserve kudos. Everyone showed

a level of respect for me as a person and not just a

number. I can only say that I hope someday to repay

the kindness you have all shown me.

Morton Plant Hospital300 Pinellas St. Clearwater

I’m writing to compliment every single person we crossed paths with at Morton Plant a few weeks ago when we brought in a friend with chest pains. We’ve never experienced anything approaching the extraordinary care your staff provided. While hosting a friend from out of town, we had to drop everything and rush him to the ER with chest pains. Your team immediately brought him to an exam room and ran tests. A little while later, he was having two stents “installed.” An hour later, he was back to joking around and asking about lunch while in a private room with a beautiful ocean view. By lunch the following day, he was released and we were dining on the beach as if nothing happened. Impressive!

I’d like to express my feelings on how I was

treated from the moment I entered the

hospital until I was discharged. The staff in

the ER, cardiac cath lab, ICU and telemetry

were professional, caring and did their jobs

in a very calm way. My husband came in with

lung pneumonia and me with a myocardial

infarction. I can’t say enough good things about

the team or the care that my husband and I both

received. Everyone was kind and courteous and

made our stay much less stressful for me and our

family (from out of state). You should be very

proud of your staff and how they treat patients,

and the standard of care that they give.

This past summer I had spinal surgery at Mease Dunedin Hospital. I want to let someone know that, despite being there for surgery, it was a wonderful experience because of the caring, friendly and professional staff. Everyone who dealt with me was genuinely compassionate. I wanted to let them know that they made a difference during my stay. They made me feel like I was their only patient, never rushing or being indifferent to my concerns or questions. What a great team! There were a few tough moments for me and I appreciate the overwhelming kindness from not only my nurses, but my many doctors as well. Thank you for caring!

Celebrating 20 Years of ImpactThanks to strong philanthropic support from our community, Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation funded nearly 60 grants in 2018. While every program and capital project made a significant impact throughout our hospitals and community, CareLift and Camp Living Springs shared a special milestone last year – both celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Camp Living Springs is a three-day adult cancer survivor retreat offered at no cost to nearly 100 campers each year. The camp gives cancer survivors a chance to take a vacation from their cancer treatment and meet other adults going through similar situations. Days are filled with fishing, crafting, nature walks, and the evening’s fun includes karaoke, entertainment and dancing. It gives cancer survivors a place where they can be themselves and share their experiences. It gives them the courage to embrace their survivorship, instead of being filled with fear. For three days, fighting cancer is put on hold.

CareLift is our free transportation service to get patients to and from medical appointments, as well as rides for patients being discharged from the hospital. More than 20,000 rides were provided in 2018 alone! The service began more than 20 years ago when volunteers expressed concern about patients who were too sick to get behind the wheel and lacked nearby family to drive them. This community outreach program boasts several minivans staffed with more than 150 volunteers who serve as drivers, aides and dispatchers.
