How strong is the proposed solution (project/program) to the need? Does the applicant’s implementation plan seem realistic and feasible? While projects may not meet this year’s parameters, many of our past grant recipients have applied several times. GSC believes that our application process is educational and thorough. Each year the Grant Screening Committee is given the task to determine agencies whose overall project/program concept meets the criteria of what NWP Members identify as current critical need in the Southern Nevada area. GSC will ultimately select two finalists who will vie for the 2019 NWP Impact Grant which is currently $420,000.

GSC asks the following questions:What community need does this proposal address? How does this need compare to

other needs our community is facing? Do similar programs already exist to address this need? What value will this project bring to our community? How strong is the proposed solution (project/program) to the need? Does the applicant’s implementation plan seem realistic and feasible?

It was wonderful seeing so many familiar and new faces at our Annual Grant Celebration Luncheon on September 26th. With over 100 in attendance, it was our largest luncheon to date! Thank you to all who joined us. As I stood at the podium, I found it hard to believe that it had been a year since Tami Hance-Lehr had passed the gavel to me as I officially became the President of NWP.

Looking back on the first year of my presidency, I could not be more proud. Thank you, members, for making NWP what it is today. We ended the 2018 Grant Season with 108 women on our roster. We had more members involved with our committees than ever before. (The GSC alone was over 40 strong!) And our Impact grant of $465,000 was our largest to date, enabling Future Smiles to begin work on the NWP Dental Wellness Center and to introduce restorative care as part of their program.

To date, NWP has awarded over $4.9 million to 23 well-deserving agencies, and as NWP continues to make an impact on our community, our community is seriously starting to take notice…not only for the collective amount we have awarded or for the

projects we have funded, but for the process we use to determine our recipients. This past year, I personally had the opportunity to speak to several organizations about our grant screening and monitoring processes, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Greater Good Council, and Vice President Sara Costello represented us as a panelist at a Grant Informational Session the MGM Foundation held in July for area grant writers. As time goes by, I find that when I mention NWP, fewer and fewer people ask me to

explain what it is…they already know. And they are aware of the impact our dollars have had in Southern Nevada.

I am very excited to begin the 2019 Grant Cycle. With our amazing Executive Committee and supportive Board of Directors, we are well on our way to having our most successful year to date. We will pass the $5 million mark this year. (We already have enough renewals for 2019 to do so.) With growing recognition and interest in NWP, we are also very well situated to reach our goal (and cap) of 120 members. This will enable us to award $500,000 to our Impact Grant Recipient. In addition, with the establishment of our Endowment, we will have the structure necessary to ensure the sustainability of our organization, looking to the future and our continued success.

Thank you to each and every member of NWP for working together to better our community and to help those in need. I am honored to represent such an intelligent, compassionate, dedicated group of women.

In gratitude,Cindy EllisNWP President 2018 and 2019

OPERATING ACCOUNT $61,917.51

By Melissa Attanasio As Nevada Women’s Philanthropy (NWP) closes out the 2018 year, the

following are items the non profit entity achieved as a financial partner in our community:

NWP created an Investment Committee and recommended to the Executive Committee the establishment of a reserve account and an Endowment Fund for the sustainability of the NWP Annual Impact Grant. As we progress into the next year, our intention is to continue to educate members and the community about this new vehicle to support NWP’s efforts. In addition, as the fund grows in value, the Investment Committee will explore investment opportunities. The Endowment affords the opportunity for gifts from members, non-members, estates, and philanthropic corporate entities.

I personally am honored to be Treasurer and the Investment Committee Chair. I have enjoyed witnessing NWP’s evolution and maturity as it establishes an Endowment Fund. I also look forward to NWP’s continued impact on the Las Vegas community.
