The season of Lent is upon us once more, a season

which coincides with springtime and the rebirth of

nature and new life which we see all around us. The

Church also desires that each

of us grow spiritually and

experience a reawakening of

our relationship with God

during the forty days of Lent,

which culminate at Easter

with the Lord’s passion,

death and resurrection. The

40 days of Lent connect us

with many biblical events, but

especially with the 40 days

Jesus spent in the wilderness

preparing for His ministry by

facing the temptations that could lead him to abandon

his mission and calling.

For us, Lent is a time for introspection,

self-examination, and repentance. It is also a time of

prayer and sacrifice.

Lent is a season and time to place ourselves before

God.

Lent is a time to confess our sins and brokenness

before God.

Lent is a time to strip ourselves bare of all

pretenses.

Lent is a time to come before God in dust and

ashes.

Lent is a time to empty ourselves of our false pride.

Lent is a time to draw closer to the Lord.

Lent is also a time and season of sacrifice … not

merely by giving up, but doing something!

The 40 days of Lent are a time for us to live life as a

disciple and as a steward of our God-given gifts. I pray

that this time will indeed be one of renewal, conver-

sion and mercy in your life, in this Year of Grace.

El tiempo de Cuaresma llegó a nosotros una vez más.

Una época que coincide con la primavera, que es el

renacer de la naturaleza y vida nueva que vemos a

nuestro alrededor. La Iglesia también desea que cada

uno de nosotros crezca espiritualmente y sienta un

nuevo despertar en nuestra relación con Dios durante

los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma, que culmina en la

Pascua luego de la pasión, muerte y resurrección del

Señor. Los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma nos

recuerdan muchos episodios bíblicos, pero

especialmente los cuarenta días que Jesús estuvo en el

desierto, preparándose para su ministerio, enfrentán-

dose a las tentaciones que lo hubiesen alejado de su

misión y de su llamado.

Para nosotros, Cuaresma es un tiempo de reflexión

interior, autoexamen y arrepentimiento. Es también

un tiempo de oración y sacrificio.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de colocarnos enfrente de

Dios.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de confesar nuestros pecados

y debilidades ante Dios.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de despojarnos de nuestras

pretensiones.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de estar ante Dios con

nuestro polvo y cenizas.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de vaciarnos de nuestro falso

orgullo.

Cuaresma es el tiempo de acercarnos más al Señor.

¡Cuaresma es también el tiempo y la época de

sacrificio…no solamente dejando de hacer, pero

haciendo algo!

Los cuarenta días de Cuaresma son un tiempo para

que nosotros lo vivamos como discípulos y buenos

administradores de todos los regalos que Dios nos ha

dado. Mi oración es que este tiempo sea en realidad

uno de renovación, conversión y misericordia en sus

vidas en este Año de Gracia.

Laws of Fasting and Abstinence

The current regulations concerning Lenten fasting and

abstinence for Catholics in the United States as

determined by our conference of Bishops are

as follows:

Abstinence is to be observed by all Catholics

14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday

and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and

Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age

up to 59.

For Catholics whose health or ability to work would be

negatively affected by fasting and/or abstinence, the

regulations above don't apply. The ill and infirm,

nursing mothers and others, may be exempted from

fast and abstinence, as determined by their pastors.

During lent, the music reflects the

more somber mood of the season

and provides a contrast with the fes-

tive music of the Easter season which

follows. The Gloria is omitted from

the opening rite and the Alleluia is

replaced by other Gospel Acclama-

tion texts. The word Alleluia contains

such a great joy that makes it inap-

propriate for a penitential season, so we “bury” the Al-

leluia in the dust of Ash Wednesday and reserve that

joy for the glory of Christ’s resurrection on Easter.

At our English Masses we will be learning a new Mass

Setting, or order, during Lent — Tony Alonso's Mass of

Christ, Light of the Nations. It is a beautiful setting-

Setting Nine starting at #348 in your red hymnals. We

will sing the Gloria for the first time on Easter Sunday.

MÚSICA

Durante la Cuaresma, la música refleja el es-

tado de ánimo sombrío de la temporada que

contrasta con la música festiva de la tempo-

rada de Pascua que sigue. El Gloria se omite

en el rito de entrada. En la aclamación del

Evangelio el Aleluya se sustituye por otros

textos ya que es una palabra que conlleva

tanta alegría que no es apropiado para una

temporada penitencial. “Enterramos” el

Aleluya en el polvo del Miércoles de Cenizas y reservamos

esa alegría para la gloria de la resurrección de Cristo en

Pascua.

En nuestras misas de inglés vamos a aprender un nuevo

orden de la misa durante la Cuaresma — Misa de Cristo,

luz de las Naciones por Tony Alonso. Este orden se toma

del himnario rojo, comenzando en el #348. El Gloria se

cantará de nuevo el Domingo de Pascua.

Lent: A Time for Inner Cleansing

Every year my mother would rearrange the furniture in the living room and family room and change the drapes. Then she would open the cupboards and drawers in the kitchen, remove all the dishes, glasses, cups, goblets, plates, pitchers, platters, bowls, casseroles, china, and silverware to clean them. It was as if we were preparing for the biggest banquet of the year. She called this cleansing fury “spring cleaning.”

Every year at this time the Church gives us the opportunity to do some inner spring cleaning. In fact, the word Lent is de-rived from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning “spring.” Lent is a prime time to rearrange our priorities, to open the cupboards of our hearts and hold our egos to the light to see those areas that need to be cleaned and polished. Inner cleansing, or con-version, has always been at the heart of Lent. In the early

Church, Lent was the final leg of the jour-ney for the catechumens preparing for Baptism. It was also a time when already baptized penitents, isolated from the as-sembly because of their sins, would pre-pare to be reconciled to God and the com-munity. The journeys of the catechumen and the penitent were related in that both embraced conversion. As the catechumen looked forward to Baptism, the penitent looked forward to reconciliation. To this day, the focus of Lent remains both bap-tismal and penitential.

Return, repent, reconcile, and renew are words that we hear in the liturgies of Lent. A common factor among these words is the prefix re-. That prefix expresses the meaning “again,” as in words such as redo, remake, and revise; but it also indicates withdrawal or backward motion, as in words such as return, revert, and remember. During Lent, we are called to change by going to a childlike innocence, simplic-ity, and joy.

Prayer helps us to return to childlike innocence. Prayer prompts us to withdraw. As Jesus said, “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret” (Matthew 6:6, New American Bible, Revised Edition). Prayer nurtures our relationship with God. Prayer also nurtures our relationship with ourselves. Prayer peels away the masks we wear and the layers of ego defenses we think we need to survive. Prayer tells us that it’s okay to be who we really are. Prayer changes us.

Fasting helps us to return to childlike simplicity. Fasting chal-lenges us to trust that God will provide all that we need. Fast-ing helps us to sort our priorities. Because the digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard when we fast, we have more en-ergy to focus on what matters. Fasting creates a hunger for God. Fasting changes us.

Almsgiving helps us to return to childlike joy. Almsgiving moves us to acknowledge how much we have been given and that fills us with gratitude and praise. Almsgiving frees us from fear by compelling us to surrender what we have and who we are to others. Almsgiving requires humility. As Jesus said, “When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be se-cret” (Matthew 6:2). True humility always leads to joy. Almsgiving changes us.

It is God who calls us to conversion, and it is God’s transform-ing grace that accompanies us on the Lenten journey as we pray, fast, and give alms. Let us pray for the courage to be open to this grace that we might come to Easter, the biggest banquet of the liturgical year, with hearts cleansed and spirits renewed. Prayer helps us to return to childlike innocence.

siglos, la Cuaresma era el tramo final de la ruta de los catecúmenos que se prepara-ban al bautismo; era también el tiempo cuando los penitentes públicos, ya bautizados, eran separados de la asamblea debido a sus pecados, y se preparaban a la reconciliación con Dios y con la comunidad.

Los itinerarios de catecúmenos y peniten-tes coincidían en la conversión. Los catecúmenos caminaban a las aguas bautismales, y los penitentes a la reconci-liación. Hasta el día de hoy, la Cuaresma es bautismal y penitencial.

Volverse, arrepentirse, reconciliarse y re-novarse son palabras que escuchamos en las liturgias de la Cuaresma. Se trata de

retornar o re-hacer, pero con la implicación de “des-hacer”, es decir dejar de hacer el mal-hacer para retomar el buen-hacer. Durante la Cuaresma, Dios nos llama a retornar a la inocencia infantil, a la simplicidad y a la alegría.

La oración nos ayuda a retornar a la inocencia infantil. La ora-ción nos impulsa al retiro, tal como Jesús dice: «Cuando tú va-yas a orar, entra en tu habitación, cierra la puerta y reza a tu Padre a escondidas» (Mateo 6:6, La Biblia de nuestro pueblo). La oración nutre nuestra relación con Dios y con nosotros mis-mos. La oración quita las múltiples caretas o máscaras del ego que lucha por sobrevivir e imponerse. La oración nos dice que está bien ser lo que somos, pro la oración nos limpia y nos cambia.

El ayuno nos ayuda a recuperar la simplicidad infantil. Ayunar nos desafía a confiar en que Dios nos provee cuanto necesita-mos. Ayunar nos da lucidez para elegir nuestras prioridades. Porque nuestro sistema digestivo no tiene que trabajar tan duro cuando ayunamos, nos concentramos mejor en lo que interesa. El ayuno debe provocarnos hambre de Dios. Ayunar nos cambia.

Dar limosna nos ayuda a volver a la alegría infantil. Socorrer nos lleva a reconocer cuánto hemos recibido y nos llena de gratitud y alabanza. La limosna nos libera del miedo de rendir-nos y entregarnos a lo que tenemos y a lo que somos para los demás. Dar limosna requiere de humildad. Como Jesús dijo, «Cuando tu hagas limosna, no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha; de ese modo tu limosna que dará escondi-da» (Mateo 6:3-4). La verdadera humildad produce alegría. Dar limosna nos transforma.

Es Dios quien nos llama a conversión, y es la gracia de Dios la que nos transforma y nos acompaña en el itinerario de oración, ayuno y limosna durante la Cuaresma. Pidamos en oración valentía para abrirnos a esa gracia y llegar a la Pascua, el ban-quete mayor de nuestro año litúrgico, con un corazón limpio y un espíritu renovado.

Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a

man. The 14 stations focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The stations are com-

monly used as a mini pilgrimage as the individual moves from station to station. At each station, the individual recalls

and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the

next station until all 14 are complete. The stations are most commonly prayed during Lent on Wednesdays and Fri-

days, and especially on Good Friday, the day upon which the events actually occurred.

1. Jesus Is Condemned to Death. Pontius Pilate condemns Jesus to death.

2. Jesus Takes Up His Cross. Jesus willingly accepts and patiently bears his cross.

3. Jesus Falls the First Time. Weakened by torments and by loss of blood, Jesus falls beneath his cross.

4. Jesus Meets His Sorrowful Mother. Jesus meets his mother, Mary, who is filled with grief.

5. Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross. Soldiers force Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross.

6. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus. Veronica steps through the crowd to wipe the face of Jesus.

7. Jesus Falls a Second Time. Jesus falls beneath the weight of the cross a second time.

8. Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem. He tells them to weep not for him but for themselves and for their children.

9. Jesus Falls the Third Time. Weakened almost to the point of death, Jesus falls a third time.

10. Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments. The soldiers strip Jesus of his garments, treating him as a common criminal.

11. Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross. Jesus’ hands and feet are nailed to the cross.

12. Jesus Dies on the Cross. After suffering greatly on the cross, Jesus bows his head and dies.

13. Jesus Is Taken Down From the Cross. The body of Jesus is tenderly placed in the arms of his mother Mary.

14. Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb. Jesus’ disciples place his body in the tomb.

Family Stations of the Cross

Each Friday during Lent, at 4:30 PM, all are welcome, especially for families

with children.

The Stations of the Cross is something that children can have a difficult time understanding. Adults see things with

grownup eyes, these Stations make it possible for all of us, young and old, to see how we can align our lives to that

of Jesus on his sorrowful walk to the Cross.

The Stations of the Cross for Seniors:

Friday afternoons during Lent at 1PM in the Church. Walking with Jesus on his way to Calvary can take on special

meaning for us as we face the pains and changes that come with getting older. By connecting many aspects of

aging to Jesus’ Passion and death, this insightful and poignant Way of the Cross shows us how close Jesus is to us on

our journey. It opens our eyes to the new beginnings that this time of life can bring and assures us that Jesus will

give us the strength and courage to face our challenges with faith and patience, endurance and compassion, spiritu-

al vigor and true wisdom, cheerfulness and generosity, optimism and abiding hope. These Stations are not just for

¿Te gustaría participar en la próxima celebración del Viacrucis viviente? Estamos buscando voluntarios que ayu-

den a representar a los personajes y al pueblo en el Viacrucis. Habrá una junta informativa para todos aquellos que

estén interesados en este evento. Comparte tus talentos con la comunidad y únete a nosotros en este gran día que se

llevará a cabo el Viernes Santo en la Iglesia de St. Mark. Para más información y detalles de cómo registrarte,

Viacrucis

La Viacrucis es una devoción católica de 14 pasos que conmemoran el último día de Jesucristo

en la tierra como hombre. Las 14 estaciones se centran en eventos específicos de su último día,

comenzando con su condenación. Las estaciones se utilizan comúnmente como un mini pere-

grinaje. En cada estación, el individuo recuerda y medita en un acontecimiento específico del

último día de Cristo. Luego de hacer unos rezos específicos, el individuo se mueve a la estación

siguiente hasta completar las 14 estaciones. Las estaciones se rezan más comúnmente durante

la Cuaresma los miércoles y viernes, y especialmente el Viernes Santo, el día en que ocurrieron

los acontecimientos.

1. Jesús es condenado a muerte. Poncio Pilato condena a Jesús a muerte.

2. Jesús toma su cruz. Jesús acepta y pacientemente lleva su cruz.

3. Jesús cae la primera vez. Debilitado por los tormentos y por la pérdida de sangre, Jesús cae bajo su cruz.

4. Jesús encuentra a su afligida madre. Jesús se encuentra con su madre, María, que está llena de dolor.

5. Simón de Cirene ayuda a Jesús a llevar la Cruz. Los soldados obligan a Simón de Cirene a llevar la Cruz.

6. La Verónica limpia el rostro de Jesús. La Verónica camina a través de la multitud para limpiar la cara de Jesús.

7. Jesús se cae por segunda vez. Jesús cae bajo el peso de la Cruz por segunda vez.

8. Jesús se encuentra con las mujeres de Jerusalén. Jesús les dice a las mujeres que no lloren por él, sino por ellas

mismas y por sus hijos.

9. Jesús cae la tercera vez. Debilitado casi hasta el punto de la muerte, Jesús se cae por tercera vez.

10. Jesús es despojado de sus vestiduras. Los soldados despojan a Jesús de sus vestiduras, lo tratan como a un crimi-

nal común.

11. Jesús es clavado en la Cruz. Las manos y los pies de Jesús son clavados en la Cruz.

12. Jesús muere en la Cruz. Después de sufrir mucho en la Cruz, Jesús inclina la cabeza y muere.

13. Jesús es bajado de la Cruz. El cuerpo sin vida de Jesús se coloca tiernamente en los brazos de su madre María.

14. Jesús es enterrado en la tumba. Los discípulos de Jesús colocan su cuerpo en la tumba.

Easter Egg Hunt:

March 25 (Palm Sunday)

The Knights of Columbus from our parish is sponsoring an

Easter Egg Hunt after the 9 and 10:30AM Masses on Sun-

day, March 25, for the children of the parish. Please plan

to take your children (8 and under) to the athletic fields

behind the Old Gym to participate in the search for Easter

eggs. Why are we doing this before Easter? Because we

are anticipating the Resurrection and this is a fun remind-

er of the glorious things to come!
