4 • SPRING/SUMMER 2018 GUIDE

As I write to you today, the sun is shining, and I have my window open to let in the crisp, fresh air. It is the first sign of the change in season - and I know I’m not the only person who is excited for what’s next!

Welcome to the Spring and Summer 2018 Course Guide. We have continued our “Back to Basics” programming theme throughout these next two sessions here at Sweetwater. You will find many of your favorite classes and workshops, and we hope you take advantage of the “next step” in your preferred medium or dare to try something new! Over the next five months, we will host six different exhibitions in our Gallery. We were excited to take part in the 52nd annual conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts in March and featured ceramic and pottery exhibitions. In April, we will take part in the annual Sewickley Spring Gallery walk and host a pop-up jewelry boutique sale called Spring LUXE. Before we know it, summer will be upon us! We are getting ready to welcome another 1,000+ campers throughout the months of June, July, and August. We can’t wait to welcome members of your family to take part in half and full day camps of art creation, exploration, and celebration. As always, we are so very thankful for your continued support and dedication to Sweetwater. We are grateful for your commitment to sustaining the creative, fine, and performing arts as a vital part of the community and region through our education classes, outreach partnerships, performances and exhibitions. We owe our success to all of you - our students, members, donors, volunteers, neighbors, and friends.See you soon!

TommyThomas P. Walters, Executive Director

Education programs at Sweetwater Center for the Arts are supported in part by grants from Allegheny Regional Asset District, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, private foundations, corporations and businesses, and the generous support of many individuals.

Exhibitions All exhibitions held at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, unless noted. All exhibitions held at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, unless noted. Exhibitions

Corners of ThoughtMarch 29 - April 28, 2018Reception: Thursday, March 29, 7:00-9:00pmAs we consider our surroundings, our environment, space and relationships, so often there are many details that go unnoticed or misinterpreted. Our perceptions and thoughts deceive us constantly. The exhibition Corners of Thought asks artists to create site specific installations throughout our building that investigate our awareness of what is happening on the peripheral of our lives, and what determines if we notice, ignore, remember or forget.

Corners of Thought is curated by Alexandra Watrous. Artists include Ron Copeland, Anna Mikolay, Meghan Olson, Katie Ott, Sarah Simmons, Brenda Stumpf, Derek Reese, and Lauren Valley.

site/sightMay 12 – June 8, 2018Reception: Saturday, May 12, 6:00-8:00pmWhat does the world look like and how do people see themselves within it? How are memory and identity manifested in those perspectives? How does the constancy of change and the current state of flux influence this connection? The site/sight exhibition will present photographic works from artists across the US who are investigating humanity's complex relationship to place.

The exhibition site/sight is juried by Ashley McNelis, Curatorial Assistant for the Carnegie International, 57th Edition, 2018 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. McNelis is a New York-based writer, curator, and art historian specializing in photography. She is a contributor to BOMB Magazine, The Brooklyn Rail, The Heavy Collective, and Hyperallergic. www.cargocollective.com/AshleyMcNelis

Mountain MuseJune 23 – July 30, 2018Reception: Saturday, June 23, 6:00-8:00pmThere is a long history of creativity and craft making in the Appalachian Mountain region. Traditional crafts have thrived among its residents since the first settlements emerged. Today there are many artists living and working in the region who continue to use traditional processes and techniques but choose to create contemporary works that reflect current concepts and aesthetics. These works establish a dialogue between the rich and heavy history of the media and object itself, with the concepts revealed through the works. Mountain Muse will bring together contemporary works in traditional media by artists who reside in the Appalachian Mountain Region. Mountain Muse is curated by Alexandra Watrous.

Summer Solo ExhibitionAugust 11 – September 7, 2018Sweetwater will once again be offering our gallery space to a regional artist to present their own solo exhibition. The artist presenting will be from within a 200 mile radius of Pittsburgh, PA.
