The Globe Newsletter of Gleeson College

Issue 27 > Friday 19 October 2018

On the last day of Term 3 we came together to celebrate a great tradition

at Gleeson College - Gleeson Day. The day allows us the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of our

patron Archbishop James Gleeson; he was a great leader in the Archdiocese

of Adelaide, he had a passion for education and vision that included the

establishment of Caritas Australia.

The day started with students having a choice between carnival activities

including Mario Cart challenge, soccer pool, mega pong, three point shooting

challenge or a walkathon around the local suburb. It was an ideal time for students to move around the

school and be involved in a carnival atmosphere and share this time with

staff and their peers.

Following recess, we enjoyed the much-anticipated Talent Show and, as always, we were amazed at the confident young men and women

who showcased their skills on stage, entertaining us all. We had bands, **PHOTO GALLERY ON PAGES 6-9**

singers and dancers to wow the crowd before I had a chance to take the stage and present the House Cup for 2018.

This year’s House Cup was presented to Fyfe House, who completed a three-peat! The anticipation by the students,

particularly the Year 12’s, was great to see. The House Cup is calculated through the allocation of points from the many activities and opportunities the students have access to here at

Gleeson College. From carnival results, merit awards, fundraising, grade point

averages, extra-curricular activity participation and awards received.

Every student has the opportunity to contribute positively to their own

house success, and Fyfe Student Leaders were very excited to accept

the cup again in 2018.

30 YEARS AMID THE HILLS + VALLEYS!

Gleeson College > 30 years amid the hills and valleysWe are eagerly awaiting our 30 Years With One Heart twilight cocktail event to be held here at Gleeson College tomorrow evening. It promises to be a very special occasion, one that enables our community to join together to reconnect and also reminisce with Old Scholars, Staff and Members of our College community. We have much to be proud of and thankful for. In advance of the evening, I recognise and thank our Leader of Community Engagement and Innovation, Amanda Price, for all of her outstanding planning and organisation of this event.

Year 12 Graduation EventsNext week marks the last full week of formal lessons for our Year 12 students. No doubt they, and their families, are thinking just how quickly time can pass by. There are a number of significant events occurring within the next few weeks that will provide an opportunity to say thank you and farewell to the ‘Class of 2018’. The first of these is sure to be a very special occasion with

our Year 12 Farewell Mass on Thursday evening. It will be fantastic to have a final opportunity to share the Eucharist with our Year 12 students and their families. The following day includes the Year 12’s Final Assembly at Gleeson College and also a farewell morning tea. Details regarding these events have been communicated by Assistant Principal - Student Development, Shannon Bertram. I look forward to seeing many proud families at these events.

College Board VacanciesAs you would have seen in the past two editions of The Globe, we currently have vacancies for parent representatives on the College Board. The Board meets once a month and we effectively set and monitor the strategic directions of the College. It is a wonderful way to be involved in the overall wellbeing of the school community, so I urge any parents who feel that they may be able to contribute as a member of the College Board to complete a nomination form that can be accessed via this link:

https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/wh1.thewebconsole.com/wh/5843/

images/Gleeson-College-Board-Nomination-Form_Editable_2018.pdf

The Annual General Meeting of the Board will be held on Wednesday November 14.

To be a LeaderIn this weekend’s Gospel reading, Jesus outlines the true meaning of leadership. Jesus profoundly says to the disciples, “whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant….for the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.” This resonates with the line in our College Song, ‘to be a leader you must be a servant to the rest’.

I trust that our soon to depart Year 12 students can carry this, and other key messages from their time here at Gleeson College, into their future lives.

COLLEGE MASS + STUDENT LEADER INDUCTION > ‘Service to Others’

During our College Mass in the final week of Term 3, we had the opportunity to thank our current Student Leaders, and also bless and induct our new 2019

leaders for their upcoming term of service to the College Community.

This special Mass took on the theme of ‘service to others’, which is one of our Gleeson 10 values, and emphasised the importance of all students being leaders

in our community. During the induction, students were presented with a tea towel; this symbolically acknowledges Archbishop Gleeson who was known to do the dishes at people’s houses as a sign of thanks after sharing dinner with

them. We thank all our leaders who have helped shape our community over the past year and we look forward to the work our new 2019 Student Leaders will do

representing our student body. **MORE PHOTOS NEXT PAGE**

Late in Term 3, McDonald House came together to celebrate our annual Mass. This gave us time to reflect on who we

are as individuals and the important role each and every one of us plays

within McDonald House and the Gleeson Community.

This year we are celebrating the Year of Youth, which provides an opportunity for all people to celebrate and share

with us, the young people of Gleeson College and the talents and gifts we

offer. It is important for us to stop and reflect at times the importance of who

we are. On this day we reflected on this and the McDonald House Motto;

“Truth, Courage, Unity”.
