User Presentation: Hosting Capacity Screening Tool for a Transmission Network The planning and operation of power systems is being challenged as the
generation mix changes, with increasing penetration of renewable generation and
retirement or displacement of fossil fueled generation. For long term strategic planning, specific detailed interconnection studies are often not possible or useful
due to the longer timeframe considered and lack of knowledge about locations and size of future plants. Nonetheless, there has been a need to understand what the
current, or expected, network can accommodate, in terms of either installed MW or the MW injection from utility scale or distributed renewables, or from the increase
in load due to increased electrification. To address some of the challenges related to long-term transmission interconnection planning, the Electric Power Research
Institute (EPRI) developed a high-level screening tool to support utilities in developing strategic plans to accommodate increasing penetration of renewable
generation while maintaining desired reliability levels. The tool is developed using used Siemens PTI PSS®E transmission planning software and Python scripting
language.

User Presentation: Aggregate Impacts of DER on Bulk Power
System Performance
The North American electric power system is transforming to a
resource mix that is integrating more Distributed Energy
Resources (DER). The 2017 LTRA1 indicated that a penetration
of DER continues across the North American footprint with an
estimated addition of more than 26 GW of non-utility photovoltaic
(PV) that will be added NERC-wide by 2027. Furthermore, the
2017 LTRA indicates that neglecting to monitor (model, plan,
analyze, forecast, and observe) for higher levels of penetration of
DER can lead to unexpected aggregated impacts(high
penetration levels of DER) on areas of the BPS and begin to
affect BPS operations. As a result, NERC is working with
industry to develop a set of guidelines to assist in modeling and
assessments such that owners/operators of the BPS can
evaluate and model aggregate DER in the Bulk Power System
(BPS).

Engineer, System
