Principal’s Message Thank you to the parents/guardians who came along to participate in the School Improvement Cycle - Parent Forum Evening last Monday. Information had gone out to the community over the prior three weeks via the newsletter and Compass regarding this event.

Gaining 34 attendees provided opportunity for 6 table groups to move around answering and responding to the KEY QUESTIONS in relation to the 4 ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS aligned to the school self-evaluation process which, is an important component of the 2018 School Improvement Cycle.

The responses put together by table groups along with additional comments made by participants (noted via ‘post it notes’), are all now on display in the hallway of the main building just down from the school foyer.

Additional opportunity for parent input in relation to the Accountability Areas is now possible via a survey on the Compass system. The school leadership team along with the school council are hopeful that any parents who were unable to attend the parent forum take part in this survey.

Please note responses are asked for to assist with the 2018 School Improvement Cycle. Feedback and input across the full breadth of school life considerations and learning is valued at any time of the year. With regard to responding to this survey however we ask that there is a focus on the set questions aligned to the 4 accountability areas. Please see further details regarding this in the body of this newsletter (page 7). There will also be context information provided with the on line Compass survey.

As Principal I would like to thank all attendees, Sue Conquest consultant and Terry Cumming School Council Vice President who with Sue chaired the evening. Thank you to the table leaders Petra Fawcett, Lillian Burton, Roger Riley, Che Stockley, Zoanne Morrissy and Anna Swan, and also to the scribes and parents and guardians who took the time to come along and actively participate. Your input along with that gained from the online survey will assist the school in evaluation and planning for the future.

A final thank you to the staff and students who live and work in the school BER spaces and to the assistance of the Leadership team members. Your assistance in setting these areas up to enable for the forum to take place is very much appreciated.

Please also see message from Terry Cumming School Council Vice President on page 6 of this newsletter.

Student Enrolments 2019 Work has well and truly begun in planning for 2019 and gauging student numbers is the first and most important piece of the work. Sometime ago Jeff McDonald requested all current Kingsville families who have a child to begin school in Foundation in 2019 to let him know the details.

Thank you to the parents who responded at that time or, who have let Jeff know since. A Compass post this week however requesting the same information revealed that 12 families had not responded and were just giving this information to us now. We currently have 36 known younger brothers or sisters ready to begin in 2019 well done Kingsville families. It is now however vital that if there are any more we need to be informed of this immediately. If as a parent you are in a situation where you are not sure if your preschool child will begin in 2019 e.g. young age or other considerations please put their name down with Jeff anyway and decisions can be made later in the year.

The enrolment process for all prospective students for 2019 begins after June 12th. All Kingsville families can assist us by reminding any families they know who may have children requiring a place next year to let us know if they have not already done so. We do also involve our current 629 students in this investigation and teachers ask them if they have younger brothers or sisters who are coming to school next year. Of course this method can be less than reliable and, at times current students have offered up new born babies and toddlers who they believe ‘should be coming to school’ much sooner than would be legally possible.

Page 3

Please note if a family has a child in year 6 who will of course be exiting KPS at the end of 2018 and they are currently outside of our deemed ‘neighbourhood area’ it is vital that it is understood that a younger sibling coming in in 2019 does not have an entitlement to a place at KPS. They can of course like all families outside of our deemed ‘neighbourhood area’ put in an expression of interest for a 2019 place. Application forms are available from the main office after June 12th. If of course a current family with a year 6 child exiting 2018 lives within our deemed ‘neighbourhood area’ then, regardless of the time span between that and another child beginning there is no impact on eligibility for a place at KPS. So Foundation students for 2019 siblings let Jeff McDonald know now if you have not already done so. Kingsville teletrasportata in Italia! A very successful Italian Day was held on May 2nd see full details in newsletter no. 12 May 4th. We were very pleased to see details of this day published in the Melbourne Italian newspaper Il Globo May 24th edition. We featured with a large half page story with four colour photos in the In classe section. A copy of this is on display in the foyer of the school.

Teacher Planning Week What happens during this week? In the second last week of this term a day is allocated to the levels and specialist teams to begin the collaborative planning of the teaching and learning for the next term. This planning is driven through one of the six transdisciplinary themes to create a unit of inquiry, e.g. “Sharing the Planet”. Teachers in teams reflect on all of the disciplines and capabilities of the Victorian curriculum and, plan to incorporate important skills and knowledge into the unit. They also focus on planning “stand-alone” units within these subject areas. The specialists also plan collaboratively and contribute to one specific unit of inquiry from each level during the year.

At the heart of the transdisciplinary curriculum is the learner constructing meaning through the five essential elements: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions. These elements go beyond disciplinary barriers and forge the curriculum into a coherent whole. The curriculum is transdisciplinary in nature because the meaning of the prefix “trans” is two-fold: to convey learning that has relevance across, between and beyond the subject areas and more importantly, learning that transcends the confines of the subject areas to connect to what is real in the world.

It is a significant undertaking by the school both logistically and financially to facilitate a time such as this, for teachers to engage in a collaborative exercise that takes into account the approach outlined above. On the day that teams are planning, the classroom program continues with the support of the specialists and casual relief teachers. The class teachers will talk to the children about this and prepare them for what to expect on their level planning day. The different levels of the school will be planning on the following days:

Monday 18th Level 3/4

Tuesday 19th Level 1 & 2

Wednesday 20th Level 5 & 6

Thursday 21st Specialists

Friday 22nd Foundation

Kingsville Primary School Student Led Conferences At Kingsville we see the student led conferences as just one component of a comprehensive reporting and assessment agenda. There are throughout the year a range of reporting actions including communications, planned meetings, written reports, share and connect times, Naplan results and year 6 exhibition to name just a few. These all have the potential to provide parents and the students themselves with additional information regarding achievement, effort and involvement. Student Led conferences are a chance to celebrate your child’s learning and we look forward to your support and partnership. The conference is a student led conversation between your child and his/her parents/guardians with the teacher supporting the process as required. Student led conferences will be held for:

Foundation, Grade 1 & 6 students from 3.45pm to 7.00pm on Tuesday 26th June

Grade 2, 3/4 & 5 students from 3.45pm to 7.00pm on Thursday 28th June Student led conferences will be of 15 minutes duration in the classroom. A number of student led conferences may be happening in the room at the same time your child is delivering their conference to you. There is also the opportunity to visit Specialist areas before or after your conference however, children must be supervised by parents in specialist areas at all times. Specialist areas provide the opportunity for students to share their learning in these different settings. They are not a place to leave children while attending another conference or a place to play. To book a time for these student led conferences we will be using COMPASS. Access to bookings will available from Monday 4th June. See the steps below to make this booking. Using COMPASS you will be able to book the student led conferences times that suit you best from any internet-connected computer. A computer will be available in the front office foyer during school hours (8.45am – 4.00pm) if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere. To make the Student Led Conferences booking for your child/children complete the following steps:

Log into the Compass parent portal using your Username and Password.

On your Compass homepage a list of your children will be displayed. A conference link will appear under their name.

Click on this link.

You will notice two or three Bookings Sheets assigned to each child

Select a booking sheet. This will display the Student Led Conference Dashboard. In the drop down menu all times that are still available will be displayed. Select your preferred booking time.

Once you have selected a time the word Booked will display in green to let you know that you have successfully booked that time.

If there are not times in the drop down menu, go back to booking sheet 2 or booking sheet 3 to find a free booking.

Make only one booking on one of these sheets. Do not make a booking on every sheet.

Please only make one booking per family per child.

If you encounter any problems using Compass system please contact the school office by phone on 9314 5869

This process will need to be repeated for every child. REMINDERS:

Your child is the focus of this conference and they are in control, so it is vital they attend.

Each conference is scheduled for approximately 15 minutes.

Parent/Guardians will need to enter by the Bishop Street entrance of the school after 5.30pm.

Page 5

Specialist rooms close at 7p.m. Children who have a late conference will need to tour the specialist areas before running their conference.

Children must be supervised by parents in specialist areas at all times. Specialist areas provide the opportunity for students to share their learning in these different settings. They are not a place to leave children while attending another conference or a place to play.

Hints for helping the STUDENT LED CONFERENCE run smoothly…

These meetings are a great experience for everyone and we would like to make sure it is an enjoyable and valuable experience for all. Listed below are some ideas for how you can prepare for the meetings and how to help them run smoothly on the night. Please take the time to read through these ideas and start discussing the meetings at home. Leading up to the meeting:

talk about the meeting casually at home e.g. “I’m really looking forward to coming to your class to hear about your learning”

show enthusiasm about the student led conference At the meeting:

when you arrive at the meeting, ask your child where you should sit etc. - remember, they are in charge

be encouraging and supportive as your child is speaking to you

use praise when the opportunity arises, you can say things like: ‘This work looks great’ or ‘I think you have thought really carefully about these goals’ or ‘I’m so impressed with how you can talk about your learning.’

ask questions to show you are interested e.g. ask HOW they decided on the page they are showing you or, WHY it is important to share this piece of work with you

After the meeting:

praise the effort your child has put into the meeting

tell them what they have done really well e.g. speaking clearly, explaining their learning, showing confidence

take home your child’s portfolio and continue the sharing. Portfolios must be returned by Friday 10th of August

Try some of these prompts if your child gets nervous or isn’t sure what to talk about…

What made you choose this piece of work?

Why do you think it is important to be able to do that?

How has your understanding of what you are doing changed?

What are you going to do to try and improve on this piece of work?

Do you think it is going to be easy or hard to improve your learning? Why?

What sorts of things do you do to try and be a good student and learner?

Is there something else you think you need to get better at in Maths/ Writing/Reading etc?

What sorts of things can we do together at home to help you improve your learning?

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting. Peter Ritchie – PYP Coordinator

School Council News On behalf of the school council I would like to thank all of those parents who attended the Parent Forum on Monday night. It was really great to hear so many ideas, concerns and suggestions being raised and captured in such a positive and constructive way. A special thanks to the table leaders (some of who were roped in on the night) who were superheroes with the sharpies and the butcher paper - Petra Fawcett, Lillian Burton, Roger Riley, Che Stockley, Zoanne Morrissy and Anna Swan. The output from the evening will be a key input to the strategic review process that we are working on this year. Kind regards Terry Cumming (School Council Vice President)

School Improvement Cycle Additional opportunity for parent input in relation to the Accountability Areas of the School Improvement Cycle is now possible via a survey through a link to an insight cycle on your Compass home page.

Survey Details When filling in this survey please note - This year we are undertaking a school self evaluation and are reflecting upon to what extent the school has achieved the goals set in our current “Strategic Plan” 2015-2018. The school leadership team is currently engaging with staff, students, parents, school council and DET regional representatives, in working to gain input from all stakeholders. To achieve this we have already carried out staff, student and parent forums and, are now working to gain parent feedback via this advertised parent survey. Reflection will focus on observed and evidenced outcomes and achievements and, will hopefully assist in identifying effective strategies that are in place now as well as, noting areas for improvement which will inform planning for the next Strategic Plan and 4 year school improvement cycle. What are we reflecting on? As a parent member of the school community when you fill in this survey please reflect and provide feedback on the focus areas of

What are we doing well?

What should we stop doing?

What should we start doing? (new ideas) Responses and ideas should relate to the key accountability areas of

Excellence in Teaching and Learning (Achievement)

Positive Climate for Learning (Engagement)

Positive Climate for Learning (Wellbeing) and

Community Engagement in Learning The information gained from parents, staff and students will inform the school Pre Review Self Evaluation Report which is a key component of the school review process.

Kitchen Garden update The kitchen garden group has put together a wonderful nature display in the school foyer to celebrate the colours and flavours of autumn. Our little table of wonders and curiosities invites us to ‘think trees’ and look at our natural environment in new ways. A variety of textures and interesting items are on display to touch, smell, examine and ponder. It’s beautiful to look at and brings a bit of colour inside during the chilly season. More importantly ‘thinking trees’ is also an opportunity to initiate discussions about living things, transformations, weather, geography, seasons, habitat, ecosystems, food and nutrition, personal and cultural connections and, how we can use tactile and visual cues to express ideas. There’s something to stimulate inquiry across all grades. Please stop by and enjoy the display. Special thanks to Sara, Clare and Thanh for your collective creativita! Meanwhile in the garden it’s getting frosty out there but we’ve still got plenty of goodies to create a journey of flavour. Rhubarb, pumpkins, scallions, beetroot, plenty of herbs and leafy vegetables are available for classroom cooking activities (or perhaps a cook-up to stock our larders for the spring fete). Spanakopita, rice paper rolls or Kimchi? Please get in touch if you are interested, you can find us on Facebook (KPS Kitchen Garden) or, let your child’s teacher know you are interested in a spot of MasterChef Kingsville style. Community Noticeboard National Championships – Fundraising Effort Andrew Land 6SE On weekend of the 7th and 8th of April, Andrew Land (6SE) competed in the Victoria State Little League championship at Knox with his teammates in the Twins Baseball Charter team. The Twins had a great weekend and won the grand final game to become Victorian State Champions. The next step for the team is to travel to Lismore, NSW in June to compete in the Little League National Championship. The winners of this will travel to America to compete in the world championships (but they would have to beat 20 other teams). The cost to go to the Nationals is significant and Andrew has created a gofundme website to help raise funds for the trip. He had bad luck in the lead up to the championship when he dislocated and broke his elbow in a scooter accident in March. Because of this, he missed playing with his team which won the Victorian State Championship and had to watch from the bench as the rest of the boys celebrated the win. Now his elbow is better, he is desperate to be part of this event and experience the thrill of the competition at the Australian Championships. If you are able to help support Andrew with his goal please go to the following link.
