per kickoff return and 10.3 yards per punt return.• Head coach David Archer ‘05 is in his sixth year directing the Big Red and had Cornell in the Ivy title race in November for the first time since 2000 last fall.

ABOUT COLGATE• The Raiders are off to a flying 5-0 start (3-0 Patriot League) after last weekend’s 27-3 victory at Bucknell.• Colgate opened the season with a 24-17 win over Holy Cross, and since has allowed just six total points in wins over then-No. 20 New Hampshire (10-3), Lafayette (45-0), William & Mary (23-0) and the Bison.• The Raiders feature one of the nation’s top defenses — ranking first in scoring defense (4.6 points per game allowed) and among the top 10 in total defense (third, 248.2 ypg.), rushing defense (sixth, 77.6 ypg.) and pass efficiency defense (seventh, 98.02).• Senior linebacker T.J. Holl leads the way with 42 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery, while Nick Wheeler has posted 25 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and two fumble recoveries.• Offensively, James Holland is averaging 76.8 rushing yards per game with five touchdowns to lead a rushing attack putting up 164.0 yards each time out, while Grant Breneman has completed 63 percent of his passes and thrown for four touchdowns.• Under fifth-year head coach Dan Hunt, a longtime Colgate assistant, the Raiders have gone 31-21 (21-5 in Patriot League play) and won the 2015 and 2017 conference titles.

THE SERIES• Cornell and Colgate will be meeting for the 100th time dating back to the first contest in 1896 with the Big Red holding a narrow 49-47-3 lead. • The Big Red owned the early series, going 13-0-1 in the first 14 games (1896-1911), while also posting nine and seven-game win streaks before 1951. • Colgate has had the better of the series since 1975, capturing 31 of the last 39 meetings, including 10 straight (1993-2005) before the Big Red commenced on a two-game win streak. • The Raiders had won seven consecutive contests prior to the Big Red’s epic 39-38 comeback in Hamilton, N.Y. in 2016, the Big Red’s first road win at Colgate since 1992.• Last season, Colgate earned a 21-7 victory over Cornell to get back to its winning ways.

CORNELL VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE• Cornell has a 132-82-7 record against the seven current members of the Patriot League football conference, including a 49-47-3 edge over Colgate.• The Big Red has advantages over Bucknell (43-14), Fordham (4-3-0), Georgetown (2-1-0), Holy Cross (5-0-0), Lafayette (14-8-2) and Lehigh (15-9-2).• This is the only contest Cornell will play against a Patriot League team this season — the first time since 2012 the Big Red won’t play multiple games against Patriot League foes.

CORNELL VS. RANKED OPPONENTS• Cornell s 10-37-1 against ranked teams dating back to 1936.• The Big Red has played a ranked Colgate squad four prior times, going 1-3 (including 1-1 in Hamilton, N.Y.)• Cornell last played a ranked team and defeated a ranked squad when the Big Red rallied for a 39-38 win over then No. 25 Colgate during the 2016 campaign. • Four of the Big Red’s first five opponents have received votes in the top 25, and the fifth was a Sacred Heart team that was 3-0 when they met.• Of its remaining five games, No. 21 Princeton is ranked and unbeaten Dartmouth is receiving votes.• Cornell last beat a team as highly ranked as Colgate (No. 17) when it took down No. 15 Princeton 14-7 on Oct. 28, 2006 in Ithaca — handing the Tigers their lone loss of the season.

A WIN OVER COLGATE WOULD ...• give Cornell a 3-2 overall record after five games.• be the first three-game win streak since beginning 2016 with a 3-0 record.• be the Big Red’s second straight in Hamilton against a ranked Raiders team.• guarantee the Big Red its first winning non-conference mark since 2016.• give Cornell its first road win of the year and snap a three-

game road skid.• be the 50th all-time by Cornell against the Raid-ers (50-47-3).• be the 642nd in program history (13th-most in the Football Championship Subdivision). NOTES FROM THE HARVARD GAME• With the win, Cornell has now won consecutive games against Harvard for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.• Dalton Banks became the fifth quarterback in Cornell history to surpass 5,000 career yards with his 18-of-24, 201-yard performance. He ended the contest with 5,005 career yards through the air.• Senior captain Reis Seggebruch became the 59th Cornellian to surpass 150 career tackles, ending the afternoon with 157 (50th all-time).• Justin Bedard’s 15-yard punt return off Dylan Otol-ski’s block was the first returned for a touchdown by a Cornellian since Ahmad Avery recovered one in the end zone against Penn during the final game of the 2013 campaign.• It was the first punt block on any kind for Cornell since Twan Terrell against Princeton in 2015.• Owen Peters posted his first 100-yard receiving game and had the first 100-yard day by a Cornell player since James Hubbard at Colgate in 2016.• Entering the game, Peters, Cornell’s leading re-ceiver a year ago, had just one catch for six yards.• The Big Red’s last rally from double digits in the fourth quarter came against Princeton last season, rallying from a 28-16 deficit in the fourth for a 29-28 win.

BIG RED INVOLVED IN STORIED RIVALRIES• The Big Red is involved in three of the top 20 most-played rivalries in the FCS. • The Cornell-Penn series ranks fifth in most games played, a total that will reach 125 this season. • The 105 meetings between Cornell and Columbia ranks 14th, while the Cornell-Dartmouth rivalries stand 19th with 101 games played. • Right behind that is the series with Princeton (100 meetings) and Colgate (99 meetings), which sit right outside the top 20.• The Cornell-Dartmouth and the Cornell-Penn series are the second-longest uninterrupted active series, as the teams have met every season since 1919, a span of 98 years. • They trail only the Lafayette-Lehigh series, which has been played every year since 1897.

DEFYING PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS• The Cornell football team was picked to finish seventh in the Ivy League’s annual preseason poll. • For the fourth straight season, the Big Red will look to surpass the prediction from the poll.• After being picked to place eighth in 2017, the Big Red finished tied for fifth and entered November in the thick of the Ivy race for the first time since 2000.• The Big Red was chosen to finish eighth in 2016, then started the year 3-0 and took sixth in the final

GAME NOTES• Junior quarterback Dalton Banks passed for 239 yards and the Big Red had more total offense than Colgate, but the visitors’ defense came up with four interceptions and eight sacks to power the Raiders to a 21-7 victory at Schoellkopf Field.• Banks accounted for the day’s lone touchdown from Cornell on a 1-yard keeper. • He set up the play with a completion to senior tight end Hayes Nolte on a second-and-24, and the extra point after the score cut the Colgate (2-3) lead in half with 1:25 to play in the third quarter.• Colgate answered right back with a 15-play drive in which it soaked up nearly seven minutes and restored its two-touchdown lead after a 7-yard pass to the end zone from Grant Breneman to Malik Twyman. • Senior Collin Shaw had five receptions for 60 yards, enough to move him into the school’s career top 20 list with 1,163 yards - good for 19th in Cornell history.• Senior James Hubbard had three catches for 37 yards, reaching the 50-catch milestone.• Colgate cut the deficit in the series to 49-47-3 in a series that dates back to 1896.• Senior Kurt Frimel had a pair of sacks over a span of three Colgate plays from scrimmage, giving him his first career multi-sack contest.• Junior linebacker Reis Seggebruch tied a career high with 15 tackles, matching his performance against Brown in 2016. He upped his career total to 99 stops.• Senior Justin Solomon made five tackles, surpassing 100 for his career (102)• Junior Cyrus Nolan had his first career sack.• Sophomore Owen Peters, who earned his first career start, made a career-high five catches for 50 yards.• Also earning a first career start was sophomore offensive lineman Matt Wells.• The 270 yards allowed was the fewest by a Big Red defense since 2009, when Cornell surrendered just 238 yards in a 33-9 victory over Bucknell.• It was also the best defensive performance against the Raiders since a 2007 game that Colgate mustered just 265 yards in a 17-14 Big Red win.

BIG RED CAPTAINS• When the Cornell football team took the field for the first time in 2018, the Big Red had two captains lead them out of the locker room. • First-time captains J. Edward Keating and Reis Seggebruch were elected in a vote of their teammates at the start of fall camp.

FOOTBALL GETS NCAA RECOGNITION (AGAIN)• Football has been publicly recognized by the NCAA for its Academic Progress Report (APR) score being in the top 10 percent nationally each year since the scores were first tabulated in 2004-05.• Two Cornell sports (football and men’s golf) have been publicly recognized each year since the APR was first released and are among just 85 teams across the country in all sports with that accomplishment.• Cornell’s score of 992 (out of 1,000) this past year is the highest in school history (the six high-est scores in program history have come over the last six years - 987, 987, 986, 991, 988, 992).• The 992 APR score this year is also the eighth-highest among all Division I football schools.• Only four FCS schools have been honored each year in football (Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn and Yale), with all four coming from the Ivy League.• The APR measures semester-by-semester records for every individual team in Division I with regard to each team members’ continuing eligibility, retention and progress toward graduation.

BIG RED RANKED AMONG TOP 100 COLLEGE PROGRAMS IN HISTORY BY AP• Cornell was ranked as one of the top 100 football programs of all-time according to the Associated Press in a ranking released in August 2016. • At No. 72, the Big Red ranked ahead of a number of Bowl Championship Subdivision (BCS) schools and second among Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs.• Only Penn (No. 66) placed higher among current FCS schools, while other Ivy League teams on the list included Dartmouth (No. 87), Yale (No. 90), Princeton (No. 81) and Columbia (No. 99).• Few collegiate football programs have the storied history of Cornell. • With more than 120 seasons of football in the books, the Big Red has claimed five national titles, won more than 600 games and has had legendary players and coaches perform on historic Schoellkopf Field. • Names such as Glenn “Pop” Warner and Heisman Trophy finalist and NCAA record-breaker Ed Marinaro have suited up for Cornell, while seven College Football Hall of Famers have set the strategy as head coaches. • The top 10 schools on the list, done to celebrate 80 years of the Associated Press poll, were Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, Florida State and Florida.

CORNELLIANS IN THE NFL• Sixth-year offensive lineman JC Tretter ‘13 will be beginning his second season with the Cleveland Browns after spending his first four pro seasons with the Green Bay Packers.• The FCS All-American was taken in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the Packers in 2013.• He was named the Packers’ starting center in 2016 and played in 31 contests with 10 starts.• Has seen action at both tackle spots and left guard as well as at center during his career.

Schoellkopf At 103 Years Young• Schoellkopf Field has been an indelible mark of Cornell football since it opened in 1915 and this year will be the 103rd season at the home field. • A gift from Willard Straight ‘01 and the family of Henry (Heinie) Schoellkopf ‘02 made the construction possible for the current stadium. • The Big Red’s first year on the field was one of its best, going 9-0 and winning the national championship. • In 1915, General Electric Company completed work on a flood searchlight system for the field, and in 1924 a construction project was completed to bring capacity from 9,000 to 21,500 by adding the famed Crescent. • In 1947 that capacity was increased to 25,597 and a press box was added. • In 1971 a gift was made to put artificial turf on the field, and it was resurfaced three times, the last time in 1999. • A new press box was built in 1986.• The 2008 season saw installation of FieldTurf synthetic grass to replace the artificial turf. • In 2016, the West Stands were demolished and the field was moved 15 feet toward the Crescent while replacing the FieldTurf to ready for more construction at the site, lowering the capacity to 21,500 in the process.

Schoellkopf Facts• Schoellkopf Field is the fourth-oldest FCS stadium, opening in 1915. Only Penn’s Franklin Field (1895), Harvard Stadium (1903) and the Yale Bowl (1914) are older. • The playing area before World War I was Percy Field, alongside Fall Creek, the present site of Ithaca HS.• The Big Red’s all-time record at Schoellkopf Field is 296-186-15 (.610).

Game 3 CORNeLL 43, saCRed HeaRT 24Sept. 29, 2018 Schoellkopf Field Ithaca, N.Y.

GAME NOTES• Cornell scored on every first half offensive possession and once on defense and cruised to a 43-24 victory over previously unbeaten Sacred Heart at Schoellkopf Field to pick up its first win of the season. • Playing against a defense ranked eighth nationally, Cornell ran for 263 yards and three touchdowns and was efficient through the air, hitting on 13-of-17 passes for 161 yards and two more scores. • Nearly all of that offense came after the Big Red had taken a 10-0 lead just 5:08 into the game after David Jones returned an interception 48 yards for a score to energize the crowd and his own sideline. • It was the first interception return for a touchdown by a Cornell player in seven years, since Rush Imhotep took it to the house from 65 yards out in a 62-41 win over Columbia in 2011.• It was the first turnover of the year caused by the Big Red defense, but not the only one on the day. • Jones had another interception, while DJ Woullard caused a fumble that was recovered by Malik Leary. • Harold Coles posted his fourth career 100-yard game on the ground, rushing eight times for 121 yards, including an 85-yard scamper for a touchdown. • The offensive line, which opened massive holes all afternoon in control-ling the line of scrimmage, also did not allow a sack on the afternoon.
