Attendance

VSMA takes daily attendance of all students which accounts for 25% of their total grade. 5 points are awarded each day and are based on arriving on time (2 pts.), kit cleanliness (2 pts.), and professional appearance (1 pt.). Absenteeism for more than 20% of the total program constitutes cause for dismissal, at which point the School Director will review the case. Excess tardiness may also be cause for dismissal at the School Director’s discretion. Opportunity to make-up missed class days due to illness or emergency will be decided upon a case-by-case basis.

Students are required to dress professionally when attending class. Outfits should be within the industry standard of all or mostly black, other than that the students are able to explore their individual sense of style as a professional artist. Professional appearance also includes conducting yourself in a professional manor (no profanity please), maintaining good hygiene, and not wearing clothing that is revealing, offensive, or considered loungewear (such as gym shoes, flip flops, hooded sweatshirts, yoga pants, etc.).

It is important for students to develop a strong work ethic that demonstrates their professionalism and dedication to the course. Arriving on time, dressing appropriately, and keeping a clean and organized makeup kit are critical traits to becoming a successful makeup artist.

Credit for Previous Training

VSMA is happy to recognize any previous training a student may have received. Please contact the School Director to discuss details for review.

Withdrawing from School

Students must prepare a written notification and submit it to the School Director. This document must contain the student’s name, address, and date. All financial obligations on the part of the school and the student will be calculated using the last recorded date of attendance.

Conditions for Dismissal

Students may be dismissed from the school for any of the following reasons:

-Not adhering to the school’s rules, regulations, policies, and code of conduct.

-Missing more than 20% of instruction time.

-Not maintaining the minimum grade point average of 70%, enforced after 25% of the total program has been completed.

8

Page 10: 2018 Catalog, Volume 1 (10/1/2017) · Bridal Makeup & Airbrushing Color Theory History of Makeup Stage & Camera Ready ... and alteration or use of institution documents with intent

Depending on the severity of the students action that breaks one of the school rules, regulations, policies, or codes of conduct, the student may receive one written warning at a meeting with the Instructor or School Director, or may be automatically deemed necessary for immediate dismissal. The School Director will notify the student in writing should it become necessary to dismiss the student. The dismissal letter will contain the date and the reason for dismissal. It is the responsibility of the dismissed student to notify the appropriate financial institution or third party payer if the student has a loan or is receiving financial aid of any kind. Prepaid tuition will be refunded according to the school’s refund policy. See “Refund Policy” on page 10 for more information.

Re-entry Policy

Students dismissed from the school who request re-entry must put the request in writing to the School Director. All cases require a meeting with the School Director to discuss any options for re-entry. The decision of the School Director is final and the student will receive a decision letter, at the address and/or email provided on the Enrollment Agreement, within five business days.

Student Complaint & Appeal Process

Nothing in this policy prevents the student from contacting the Workforce Board (the state licensing agency) at 360-709-4600 or via email to [email protected] at any time with a concern or a complaint.

Students who have a complaint or who would like to appeal a dismissal must request in writing an appointment for an interview with the School Director.

The written request should include the following information:

1. Student’s full name and current address.

2. A statement of the concern including dates, times, instructors, and if applicable, other students involved.

3. Date of complaint letter and signature of the student.

4. Three dates in which the student would be available for a meeting with the School Director. These dates should be within 10 business days of the complaint, and not during scheduled instruction time.

The School Director will notify the student in writing of the appointment date in which the concerns or appeal will be addressed. Every effort will be made to bring an amicable closure to the concern. Should it be necessary, a panel of advisors will hear the concerns and will be asked to assist in bringing a resolution to concerns and/or appeals. The student will be notified in writing within five business days of the outcome of the meeting. Should the contract be canceled by either the student or the school, the last date of attendance will be used as the date to calculate any refund in accordance with the school’s refund policy.

c. When a student, without notice, fails to attend classes for 30 calendar days.

6. All refunds must be paid within 30 calendar days of the student’s official termination date.

VSMA offers payment plans for tuition to all students enrolling in our Master Beauty Makeup Class at no additional fee. We do our best to provide an affordable education with flexible payment option for our students. A registration fee of $100 is required to reserve a spot in one of our classes, and then a minimum deposit amount of $500 is required upon completion of the enrollment agreement, where a payment schedule is planned and agreed upon to fulfill the tuition costs by the first day of class, unless otherwise agreed. Any previously agreed payments to be made after the commencement of the class need to be delivered up front in the form of a post-dated check(s). Kit costs are not included in tuition, and kit payments are due in full 30 days prior to the first day of class. See “Payment & Enrollment Info” on page 24 for more details.

Credit Unions & Bank Loans

Student loans may be available from local financial institutions who offer personal loans or student loans for career training programs. VSMA accepts any eligible scholarships awarded to students for their postsecondary education. High school students should speak with their school counselor about scholarship opportunities that might be available to them.

VSMA put together a list of scholarships available to high school students that they could potentially use towards our program. Please email us for a copy, or that list can be downloaded HERE and please contact the scholarship program directly for further information about the scholarships.

why choose Vivaluxx?

The world of makeup artistry is an incredibly multifaceted and rewarding profession. A successful makeup artist has a diverse portfolio and the confidence and ability to work with any client or industry professional to execute a desired look. The state of Washington does not require a cosmetology or esthetician license to work as a makeup artist, and these requirements will vary by state. This means that anyone with the dream of becoming a professional makeup artist can do so, even without an education or certificate in makeup artistry.

There is nothing wrong with choosing to be a self taught makeup artist, although that road requires a substantial personal drive to practice and master application techniques on others, all through trial and error, and without a mentor to validate if and why the application is done correctly. Basic knowledge of ingredients, products, and sanitization techniques are minimum requirements of working makeup artists, as well as acquiring and maintaining a professional makeup kit without receiving any professional discounts on those products.

Other major hurdles that self taught makeup artists may endure is that they may not be able to acquire insurance coverage pertaining to their kit and professional liability, and if they are wanting to work in TV and film, or to teach makeup artistry, they will not be qualified to do so without a proper education. Companies looking to hire someone to work at a makeup counter may be more interested in retail experience than makeup education, so that avenue might be more suitable for a self taught makeup artist, although an education in makeup artistry will always be beneficial.

Here are some of the key benefits of becoming a certified makeup artist though Vivaluxx:

Experience. The greatest benefit of attending Vivaluxx is that students will graduate with the confidence and skills required to continue their profession as makeup artists in just 5 months time.

13

Page 15: 2018 Catalog, Volume 1 (10/1/2017) · Bridal Makeup & Airbrushing Color Theory History of Makeup Stage & Camera Ready ... and alteration or use of institution documents with intent

Another important part of our curriculum is the business aspect of makeup artistry, which includes writing contracts, utilizing social media, tracking income, understanding tax deductions, and dealing with clients, to prepare the students for maintaining good business practices. Our course begins with the fundamentals of the makeup industry and technical aspects of artistry, then expands through lessons in color theory, history, and advanced makeup applications where the students will practice those fundamentals while exercising their creative muscle. This means lot’s of practice in the technical application, and building confidence in color selection and creative design, all while having a mentor there to answer questions and provide constructive criticism for quick improvement.

Portfolio. The advanced beauty segment of the course has a large emphasis on creative freedom, and having a maximum class size of 8 students allows the Instructor time to consult with each student individually to provide creative support and a plan for technical execution. This allows for each student to have a unique portfolio that reflects their individual artistic style.

Networking. Students at VSMA are introduced to multiple guest speakers, including photographers, event coordinators, and hair stylists for the students to build a network with and utilize as professional contacts in the beauty industry. Classmates are also critical to the students education as they are able to provide each other support and encouragement, and learning in a group setting also allows the students the ability to practice on different faces shapes and skin tones throughout the course.

Perks. Becoming a certified makeup artist gives students credibility, meaning setting higher rates and being qualified for more job opportunities in the makeup industry. Certified makeup artists are eligible to receive product discounts, access to industry events and workshops that provide networking opportunities and advanced education.

A body painting workshop will be lead by guest speaker Dutch Bihary, a professional body painter who travels the world teaching his craft and was also featured on Skin Wars, a body painting reality show which Dutch was a competitor and finalist on the first season.

Students will learn about basic sponge, brush, and airbrush techniques when applying body makeup. Important topics, such as working with models, applying pasties, stencil work, paint mediums, and utilizing human anatomy, will be taught during this exciting and challenging segment of the Master Beauty Makeup Class.

Professional Photoshoot: Body Painting

Our final photoshoot of the course is dedicated to showcasing all of the lessons encompassed in the Master Beauty Makeup Class, including beauty makeup, hair styling, character creation, and body painting application.

The application and photos will be executed off site at a facility suitable to allow room for the students to work and a large backdrop for the professional photographer to capture images of the model in completion.

This finale to our course is a challenging and rewarding way for the students to expand their abilities in makeup artistry and push their limits on creativity and design. The students will receive access to the final images for their professional portfolio and social media, as well as a sense of completion and a realization of their unlimited artistic boundaries in their abilities as creative makeup artists.
