1 The Columbus Area Business Hall of Fame will this year induct its 13th class of honorees on Nov. 20th. The Chamber is proud to announce the 2018 class of inductees: Emiel Christensen, Christ Wunderlich and J.C. Echols. Emiel Christensen was a prominent architect in the Columbus Area. He was involved in the Oak Ballroom in Schuyler, the old Columbus City Hall building, Eagle Creek Lodge by Atkinson, as well as many residential homes in Columbus. Christensen was well-known for his development of “Pa-Wi-To,” a 30-acre site on the bluffs south of Columbus. Christensen was professor of planning at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Architecture, and he was also director of planning for the Division of Nebraska Resources. Jackson Caleb Echols ran a lucrative painting business for 27 years before Hans Elliott and G.B. Speice invited him to join their real estate and insurance firm. During his years in real estate, Echols played a significant role in developing the areas north and south of the Frankfort Square. Echols was one of the founders of the Equitable Building and Loan Association. Christ Wunderlich came to the United States from Germany. In 1908 he came to Columbus and ran Park Buffet in Columbus. After prohibition, Christ opened Wunderlich’s Friendly Bar along with his three sons in downtown Columbus. At this location, the family added food to the menu, serving Rosa’s homemade soup and sandwiches, and began serving the now famous “Tom & Jerry’s.” The third generation of Christ’s family now runs the family business, now known as Wunderlich’s Catering & Barley Shoppe. Area Students Get First Hand ExperienceThe Drive for Five has been exceptionally active in our schools lately. First grade students were exposed to STEM careers at our annual Vehicle Day. Nearly four hundred students got to see the inside and outside of vehicles used to make our community run.

Juniors and seniors at Lakeview High School learned how to write a resume, give their best effort while on the job, and they participated in practice job interviews with actual business people. We were very excited by the number of students who said they plan to pursue a career in advanced manufacturing.

Another exciting event this month was Manufacturing Day. Student groups from 11 schools each toured three manufacturing facilities, and they had a blast answering trivia questions and completing challenge activities along the way.

Something new this year is the addition of a job shadow program that is being developed and tested through Columbus Community Hospital. Ten high school students are currently participating in a nine-week program that will introduce them to different career paths. Once we’ve perfected the program at CCH, we will invite more businesses and students to join us.

All these educational programs are designed to build interest in the careers we have right here in our area and to establish strong relationships between students and business leaders. Why would you want to live anywhere else but here?

Drive For Five Recruits Across U.S.Here’s Something Good for you. In addition to the career fair and website recruiting the Drive for Five normally does, this year we’ve added targeted advertising to economically distressed areas around the country.

By isolating the areas in the U.S. where people have the skills we need here at home, we’ve been able to obtain a 36% increase in the number of views on the Something Good Columbus website and our job postings there!

If you are a member of the Drive for Five, your help wanted ads are posted on this site and those job seekers are now learning there is definitely Something Good going on here in Columbus.

2018 Holiday BasketballThe Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce will coordinate the 37th annual Columbus Holiday Basketball Tournament on December 27th and 28th at Lakeview.

Varsity and JV boys & girls teams compete from Columbus Scotus, Columbus Lakeview, Schuyler, and Twin River high schools.

This tournament is an excellent way to bring people to our community, support our youth and provide extra funding for

the schools’ athletic programs. The Holiday Basketball Tournament is supported by corporate sponsorship, program advertising and teams’ sponsorship with net proceeds to the host school. Without this support, this tournament would not be possible.

There are limited spaces

available for each level of sponsorship. If you would like to help support this great holiday tradition, contact Sandie Fischer at the Chamber office at 564-2769 or email [email protected]
