2018 RM SOTHEBYS PORSCHE ONLY AUCTION
Last Thursday, I traveled to the Porsche North America Center in Atlanta, to view the auction action. This was a Porsche only auction and the RM Sothebys people had assembled a mouth watering selection of Porsches, from 1951 “split window” 356 1300 cabriolet, and a similar year coupe, both dark red, to the 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo Classic series “Project Gold”. In between was every sort of desirable street Porsche, such as several Turbos, GT2 Club Sport, GT3 RS, GT2 RS, Carrera GT, two “slant nose” turbos from the mid 1980’s, a 918 Spyder, Carrera 4S, Cup 3.8 RSR Evo, you name it, it was on offer. Amongst the racecars were two RSR Carreras, one a ’73, the other a ’75, plus John Fitzpatrick’s 956 and the ferocious looking Interscope K4/02 from 1981.

The auction started with various paintings and drawings of Porsches, amongst which were original Porsche handbooks on such as the 934 and 935. All seemed to reach staggering high money. One example was a writing desk, the top of which comprised a Porsche engine cover. That changed hands for $25k, an original Tip 547 four-cam engine bought $250k and a kid-sized Porsche 917 sold for $26k. Lucky child who gets to drive that!

It was cold in Atlanta this last weekend and the auction itself was held outside. I was there principally to help an old friend sell the K4 but he also had a “barn find” 1958 356A 1600 “Super Speedster, which was estimated at between $125-150k. It actually sold for a hammer bid of $275k. Go figure…. I lasted until eight lots from the end of some seventy cars on offer when I finally took my leave to go relax in the warmth of the Porsche center. RM Sothebys staff even handed out blankets to those in need!

So a very successful sale all around, the auction company selling around $28M worth of Porsches. I suspect that this auction will be repeated next year, with probably even more cars in attendance… Attached are some photos that I took off the cars on offer.
