Urban Green Council’s mission is to transform buildings for a sustainable future.

Dear Friends,

I’ve been at Urban Green for seven months and I’m excited by

the new directions we’re taking. We will continue to convene,

advocate, educate and research building efficiency best practices

for New York City, while adding an international focus to our work.

As a sustainability market leader, our peers are global. And

we need to address issues on a global scale to ensure the

sustainability and resiliency of New York City.

Major programs launched in the past year, including the

Blueprint for Efficiency and Advancing Electrification, speak to

Urban Green’s leading-edge approach to building research and

policy that apply here at home and globally. We look forward to

sharing our work and learning from others around the world.

Sincerely,

John Mandyck

WE CONVENETO DRIVE CONSENSUS SOLUTIONS.

Urban Green convened NYC’s leading building and energy

stakeholders for the 80x50 Buildings Partnership, which

developed the groundbreaking Blueprint for Efficiency

framework to cut carbon in NYC’s large buildings.

We launched Advancing Electrification, a roadmap for scaling

heat pumps in NYC’s large multifamily buildings. In Year 1 we’re

developing priorities through stakeholder convenings and in-depth

research; in Year 2, we will explore implementation strategies,

such as incentives and stakeholder education.

ADVANCING ELECTRIFICATION

RESEARCH

To get to a clean energy future, we’ll need to

replace technologies that run on fossil fuels —like heat and hot water from natural gas—with alternatives that run on electricity,

Over the last two years, we have identified and refined product ideas through surveys, focus groups, energy analyses and interviews with manufacturers.

Our latest report identifies energy-efficient technologies that the New York

construction market can use today. It also digs into why they aren’t on the market already—a lack of communication between manufacturers and building owners, designers and operators. This research is our first step toward bridging the gap.

SUPPORTING THE DISCOVERY PROCESS

To ensure better alignment between building product development and industry demand, NYSERDA engaged Urban Green Council to conduct a technology needs assessment within the building industry.

Commercial Product Application (Summer Conditions)

Residential Product Applications (Winter Conditions)

Advanced curtain walls

Advanced curtain walls use thermally broken connections with insulated, multi-pane glazing.

To make energy-efficient curtain walls commonplace, a standardized and cost-effective product is needed.

Efficient Modular Cooling

High-efficiency compressors cool the space with less electricity but give tenants control.

Over 30% of large offices have HVAC equipment that could be improved with this product.

Slab Insulation

Balconies and floor slabs need to be insulated to

retain heat and ensure comfort during winter.

This is done for some new buildings but almost all existing buildings need to be retrofitted.

PTAC Replacement

Heat pumps retrofitted into PTAC openings could heat and cool apartments with less energy.

There are over 120,000 PTACs in large NYC buildings that could be replaced.

Respondents and advisors included professionals from a range of industry groups.
