Mission�e Missouri Western State University Foundation is a not-for-pro�t charitable organization that functions solely to support the mission of Missouri Western State University. �e Foundation receives, invests, maintains and administers contributed resources; and otherwise acts to further the mission and goals of Missouri Western State University by directing acquired resources to serve the University and its students.

In 2017-18, the Foundation continued its role to advance the mission of the University by funding scholarships, special programs and more. Last year, the Foundation’s assets reached $50 million, and this year, total assets were just short of $53 million. To give you an idea of what a great milestone these numbers represent, past records show that on July 1, 1971, the Foundation had assets totaling $4,872.86! “�e strength of our assets is due to thousands of generous donors throughout the Foundation’s history,” said Jerry Pickman ’85, executive director of the Foundation and vice president for University Advancement. “We plan to continue the Foundation’s outstanding work to bene�t Missouri Western students and faculty, and we envision a bright future ahead.” One of the most popular events funded by the Foundation and sponsors is the R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues. �e 2017 Convocation featured Martin Luther King III, civil rights activist and global humanitarian. His topic was “Embracing the Ideals of Freedom, Justice & Equality,”

and he spoke to one of the largest crowds in the event’s history. �e 2018 event, the 25th annual, will be on Nov. 13 and will feature award-winning veteran journalist Chris Wallace speaking on “A View from Washington.” �e Foundation also receives many undesignated gifts every year, which help provide extra support for students. Last year, for example, the Foundation helped

purchase equipment for a new personal training lab in the Looney Complex, where students can now practice using their knowledge and skills in real-world personal training experiences. �e Foundation also supported the annual Visual Arts Day, where 950 high school students and 48 teachers participated in 15 hands-on workshops and an art exhibition in October 2017. �e

day is an outstanding recruiting tool for the Department of Art and a great opportunity for high school students to experience the art facilities in Potter Hall. Additionally in FY18, the Foundation helped fund the third annual Interdisciplinary Nature of Geography Speaker Series, bringing in well-regarded speakers in October and March. Not only did many students attend these events, but several members of the St. Joseph community did, as well. Many students are taking advantage of the purchase of a new, large-format book scanner in the library, which was purchased with Foundation funds. �e new scanner is much easier to use than the previous one (which was irreparable) and much quicker. �e library now has a dedicated scanning station, a great bene�t to students.

Foundation Year in Review 2017-2018 Also, the Child Abuse, Education, Prevention and Investigation Conference was held on campus in April 2018, thanks also to the support of the Foundation. �is multidisciplinary conference is organized by the MWSU Law Enforcement Academy; the Department of Criminal Justice, Legal Studies and Social Work; the School of Nursing and Health Professions; and the Department of Education. Both students and professionals had the opportunity to attend a variety of sessions at the conference. “�e Foundation’s work and its accomplishments would not be possible without the support of our donors,” Pickman said.

In January 2018, Missouri Western entered the fourth year of its �ve-year Centennial Capital Campaign. Jerry Pickman ’85, executive director of the Foundation and vice president for University Advancement, said that although it has been a successful campaign, there is more work to be accomplished.

Campaign Successes �e campaign kicked o  in January 2015 with three campaign goals: investment in campus facilities, investment in Missouri Western’s endowment and investment in academic and co-curricular programming. �e kicko  announcement also set a celebration goal of $20 million, which has been surpassed. Of the campaign’s leadership support, $10 million was a deferred gift commitment from an alumnus who lives in St. Joseph and wishes to remain anonymous. �e Foundation also received a $1.5 million pledge from Mosaic Life Care to endow a professorship

in the �eld of population health. �e Mosaic Professorship for Population Health was the �rst endowed professorship in Missouri Western’s history.

Within the �rst year of the campaign, the Foundation

also began receiving pledges to support the renovation of Spratt Memorial Stadium,

one of the facilities identi�ed as an urgent need in

the University’s Comprehensive Master Plan in 2014. Work began in 2015 and was completed in 2016, thanks to a combination of public and private support. �e stadium project included new turf for the �eld, removing the track around the �eld, moving the visitor side bleachers closer to the �eld and replacing the seating on the home

side. Steven L. Craig donated funds for an extra-large video scoreboard and the �eld was named Craig Field in his honor. A three-story building was also part of the project, and it features a new concourse area with a ticket o³ce, team store, two concession stands and larger restrooms. �ere is also a new Stadium Club, which is two to three times larger than the previous space. �e second ´oor houses individual suites with both indoor and outdoor seating and a serving area, in addition to restrooms, a full kitchen and a Hall of Fame room. �e third level includes a control room for the video board, a coaches’ suite and a press box. A new Victory Plaza was also created between the stadium and the Gri on Indoor Sports Complex as part of the campaign, and 274 engraved bricks have been sold

since it was built. Bricks are still available for purchase to support the campaign. In 2018, the Bill Snyder Pavilion in Spratt Stadium was dedicated, thanks to a gift from Craig. �e two-level area o ers a great gathering and tailgating space for fans. �is past year, campaign funds also helped the Looney Complex arena receive an upgrade, which included all new seating and bleachers, paint and new graphics. �is work was made possible because of an anonymous donor. A renovation and expansion of Potter Hall was one of the original goals of the campaign, and progress

CentennialCapitalCampaignReport has been steady since the campaign began. Pickman noted that work on the hall, which houses the School of Fine Arts, will only be made as funds are raised. Since the campaign began, Potter Hall has received several improvements, including an addition of a percussion studio and restrooms. Additionally, thanks to capital improvement funds from the state and a donation of the 2015-16 membership dues of the Missouri Western Arts Society, several common areas were updated, and there were improvements to the heating and cooling systems. Looking Ahead

In December 2016, Patterhn Ives LLC of St. Louis was selected by the Missouri Western Board of Governors for planning and design services for Potter Hall. �e Missouri General Assembly appropriated $150,000 for architectural services for the Potter Hall project, and that funding was matched by the Foundation with campaign gifts. Pickman said that e orts to secure leadership support for the Potter Hall renovation and expansion project are currently underway.
