There are a million what ifs in every story. What if D. Hunt had never taken the wrong turn and saw the Family Scholar House sign on that fateful day, April 8, 2013? What if she hadn’t had her phone with her to immediately start researching the organization. What if the domestic abuse she suffered hadn’t driven her to the decision to reach out?

But it did.

Which brings us to our second set of what ifs. What if there were no Family Scholar House sign for her to notice? What if the people that started FSH had never asked themselves the positive side of the question, what if? What if we could give people a second chance? What if we could engineer a way for them to become contributing members of society?

So we did.

Which brings us to our third set of what ifs. What if we built it and we didn’t get support from anyone? What if you didn’t give?

But you did. So we thank you. But we constantly have to ask ourselves, what if we could do more?93The completion rate for college credit

What if she decided to stay defeated?

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been”

What if she acceptedphysical and mental abuse?

What if she had used having a child at the age of 19 as an excuse?

At Family Scholar House we are believers.

We believe in the power of education to change lives, families and communities. We believe in second chances and fresh starts. We believe in the resilience of the human spirit. We believe that our past is part of us but does not define us. And, we believe in the wonderful single parents and young adults who come through our doors determined to make the most of new opportunities.

They say that seeing is believing; however, one of my favorite movie lines (from The Santa Clause) turns that on its head and notes that “Believing is seeing.”

At Family Scholar House we are seeing the positive outcomes of believing in all that is possible for the many families and individuals we serve and the community that benefits from these success stories.
