How You Can Help 19

It has been an honor to serve as the President of the Association’s Board of Directors this year. As we transition to a new year, I’m thrilled to see the board, staff and community work together to expand our services. It is our goal to bring daily living skills classes to Berkeley and Dorchester Counties in 2019. With your continued support, we can reach so many more blind and visually impaired individuals by bringing our services closer to their homes. I would like to thank my fellow board members, our CEO, Courtney Plotner, the Association’s staff as well as our volunteers, community partners, donors and clients for making this a great year. I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for our Association.

Julius J. Anderson, Jr, President, ABVI Board of Directors 2017-18

Our Programs

For more than 80 years, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired – Charleston (ABVI) has been serving individuals with visual needs. We have three main programs supporting our mission: Focus on Adults, Focus on Children and Own Your Life. Through our programs and services, we are committed to preventing unnecessary vision loss and restoring vision, when possible, as well as empowering our blind and visually impaired clients with the skills they need to lead more independent lives. In addition, we provide guide dog scholarships for our clients as well as opportunities for social engagement.

As we enter our 83rd year, we are excited to begin expanding our Own Your Life daily living skills classes into Berkeley and Dorchester Counties. In addition, we are working to bring occupational therapy to individuals in their homes.

Advancement Committee Hosts Blind Bowling Event

The Advancement Committee hosted its first Strikes for Sight fundraiser in partnership with The Alley. More than 50 people attended this fun event and bowled with an impaired vision or complete blindness using glasses that imitated the symptoms of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts. Thank you to Eschenbach for donating the glasses.

Focus on Children Program Enters 9th Year

In partnership with the Charleston County School District, local eye doctors and funders, the Focus on Children clinics provided free vision screenings for 1,579 preschool-aged children from predominately Title I schools.

Blind & Visually Impaired Individuals Getting Back to Work

In May 2018, three Own Your Life clients accepted jobs with The Lighthouse for the Blind, a manufacturing facility in Summerville. Throughout the year, ABVI had 14 clients enroll in the Own Your Life Employee Development program where they developed daily living skills and learned assistive technology, computer, interview techniques, resume building and other job-readiness skills.

Own Your Life Clients’ Art Included in North Charleston Art Collaboration

The North Charleston Artist Guild invited ABVI clients to create pieces for a collaborative art installation. Each artist was given a wooden board and challenged to embellish it in their unique style. The installation was on display in the lobby of the North Charleston City Hall and featured art from 13 Own Your Life clients as well as other community and professional artists.

ABVI Partnered with the College of Charleston

ABVI partnered with graduate students from the College of Charleston’s Community Assistance Program to conduct a detailed and comprehensive review of our Own Your Life program. The students helped our staff identify ways to improve program services and better quantify results for the Personal Enrichment track.

Focus on Adults Served 350 Adults from July 2017 to June 2018

We continued our partnerships with AccessHealth Tri-County Network and East Cooper Community Outreach to provide free, comprehensive eye exams, prescription eyewear and referrals for uninsured or underinsured adults through our Focus on Adults program. All program participants must live on incomes at or below 200% of the poverty line. 99% of adults seen received free, prescription glasses.

4th Annual Noir Raised $136,966

Noir 2018 was held at the beautiful Cedar Room, attracting more than 275 people. Thanks to our generous sponsors and event attendees, we raised $136,966 to support visual needs within the Tri-County.

We provide free, comprehensive eye exams, prescription eyewear and referrals for up to 40 adult patients per month in the Tri-County area.

We serve uninsured and underinsured adults with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

We partner with local optometrists to help correct vision impairments, prevent vision loss and educate patients on the importance of vision care.

99% of adults seen in Focus on Adults need prescription glasses, which they receive at no cost.

One Monday each month is a busier day than normal at ABVI. It’s the day volunteer optometrists provide free, comprehensive eye exams to uninsured or underinsured adults through our Focus on Adults program. Many of the individuals we treat have not received a proper eye exam in years, if ever. And as they share their stories of vision struggles with our volunteers and staff, it can be an overly emotional day.

During a recent Focus on Adults clinic, we met a woman named Becky. After her eye exam, it was confirmed that Becky needed prescription glasses. Before leaving ABVI, she was fitted for frames. It was during the fitting when she began to cry.

Becky shared with ABVI that she had been struggling to see for over a year.

Earlier in the year, she began saving to pay for an eye exam and the glasses she knew she would need. During this time, Becky had a major setback. She suffered two heart attacks and had to be hospitalized. Having no insurance, all the money Becky saved went straight to her hospital bills. Becky could no longer afford the eye exam to get the glasses she desperately needed.

Through her tears, Becky told our staff and volunteers that she was so grateful for ABVI’s Focus on Adults program. “Today’s appointment did not feel like a free clinic. I felt like I was at a regular doctor’s office. I am so glad that you can help those in the community, like me, who don’t have insurance.”

Your support allows hundreds of Tri-County adults, like Becky, to receive the critical vision care they need. Thanks to you, Becky’s daily life has drastically improved. Seeing is no longer a challenge, and Becky can refocus her energy on work, family and overall health.

BECKY’S STORY Program Overview

Focus on Adults

Studies show that half of all blindness and visual impairment can be prevented with early detection

and treatment. By providing free vision clinics, Focus on Adults removes the financial barrier from

proper vision care for Tri-County adults.

Focus on ChildrenBRADEN’S STORY

Like many 4-year-old little boys, Braden has a lot of energy. In school, he was unable to sit still in class, had been experiencing ongoing behavior issues and was falling behind his peers academically. Sadly, no one recognized Braden’s challenges were the result of poor vision.

Thanks to your support, Braden’s school was one of 22 in Charleston County where ABVI holds its annual Focus on Children vision clinics. During the 2017-2018 school year, he received a free vision screening and eye exam through our program.

During the eye exam, the doctor realized he was seeing double. Braden never knew seeing double wasn’t normal. He thought everyone saw two teachers, two sets of words on the board, two stacks of papers on his desk.

Like most of his classmates, this was Braden’s first eye exam. Many parents do not realize that children need to have their eyes checked at such an early age. If a child has an untreated problem, his or her vision may become limited in ways that cannot be corrected. However, if the problem is identified at an early age, it is usually possible to treat the child before any permanent damage occurs.

And preventing permanent damage is just what ABVI’s Focus on Children program aims to do. The eye exam revealed that Braden’s eye muscles were not developing the way they should. After a discussion with his family, Braden was immediately recommended for surgery with a local surgeon.

Thanks to you, Braden’s vision disorder was caught and treated properly. After his surgery, Braden excelled in preschool because he could finally see clearly, and he was excited to move on to kindergarten with his friends.

Program Overview

We offer free vision screenings for preschool-aged students in 22 Charleston County schools, 21 of which are Title I. Many students in these schools live at or below the poverty level.

We partner with local ophthalmologists and optometrists to provide comprehensive eye exams to catch vision disorders in the early, treatable stages.

We work to catch visual impairments in children at an early age so we can help prevent permanent damage and interruption to a child’s education.

Around 1,500 children receive free vision screenings each year through the program.

According to the Vision Impact Institute, the risk of failing a grade level is 3 times greater for a child with poor visual acuity than it is

for a child with 20/20 vision.

Own Your LifeAMANDA’S STORY

When Amanda was first diagnosed with a vision disorder causing rapid vision loss, it felt like her world was collapsing. Amanda was in denial and became angry and depressed. She would not heed her doctor’s warning to stop driving because she did not want to admit she was going blind.

Then Amanda had an accident. She slammed into the back of another car. She could not tell the driver was slowing down. This accident finally led Amanda to accept her diagnosis and listen to her doctor’s plea to seek support in adjusting to this major change in her life.

After seeking treatment at MUSC’s Storm Eye Institute, she was referred to ABVI.

Amanda joined ABVI’s Own Your Life program so she could regain her independence. She quickly realized that there were people just like her at ABVI doing incredible things – from simple things like cooking and doing laundry to more complex tasks like finding a job and learning how to navigate public

transportation. Amanda was inspired by her fellow Own Your Life participants and wanted to put in the hard work to become independent once again.

As a part of her Own Your Life training, Amanda was taught assistive technology and computer skills. When she learned how to use JAWS to access text on the computer screen, she thought, “I’m back.” She knew she could finally begin to love her life again, and most importantly, herself.

Thanks to you, it was possible for us to give Amanda the tools she needed to conquer her rapid vision loss. Today, Amanda is part of a tight network of friends and peers she never could have imagined during her darkest days. She has mastered assistive technology and can search the Internet just like you and I do. She goes to work each day and finds pride in her job as a production employee at a parts supplier for Boeing and the military.

85% of Own Your Life Employee Development program clients have secured

jobs since the program started.

Our Own Your Life program helps blind and visually impaired individuals achieve independence in their personal lives and develop skills to gain employment so they can lead safe, dignified, independent and rewarding lives.

We help our clients learn the adaptive skills they need to join or re-join the workforce through our Employee Development classes.

We provide daily living skills, assistive technology training, braille, group therapy, art therapy and computer tutoring through our Personal Enrichment classes.

We have more than 215 blind and visually impaired clients eligible for services through Own Your Life.

After my guide dog started having allergic reactions to her food, I contacted ABVI for help. I truly appreciate the partnership between ABVI and my local vet in finding the right food for my guide dog. My dog is no longer itchy, and we are both happy and healthy. Thank you to everyone at ABVI.

Program Overview

We provide annual scholarships to help maintain and extend the working life of a guide dog and to enhance the quality of life for our blind and visually impaired clients.

These scholarships are critical for guide dogs as they need good nutrition, regular vet checkups and proper grooming to stay healthy and keep their team safe. On average, the cost of premium dog food, regular vet visits, medicine and grooming is $1,200 a year, or $100 a month.

From July 2017 through June 2018, ABVI supplied 2,452 pounds of dog food through our program.

Why can’t I adopt a shelter dog to be trained as a guide dog? ~ Dog Lover in James Island Have you ever wondered why guide dog schools breed their own dogs instead of using shelter dogs? The main reason is shelter dogs do not always have a complete medical and social history, making it hard to know what they were exposed to as puppies or young dogs. Guide dog trainers can study a litter of puppies from birth and identify specific trends to predict the potential success of each dog.

Trainers look for a calm temperament, willingness to learn as well as the drive to make decisions. A large part of a guide dog’s training is learning how to go out in public. You would be surprised at how much attention a cute dog like me can attract! Starting as early as 8 weeks, we receive special training on how to focus on our handler and tune out the other distractions. So, if your household or shelter dog does not receive the proper training from the beginning, it would be a challenge to keep a blind or visually impaired individual safe.

If you know someone who is blind or visually impaired and is interested in being matched to a guide dog, tell them to do their research first and then call my friends at ABVI for support.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

19Stay in Touch

EyeGive is our monthly giving program where donors can sign-up online for automatic monthly donations to ABVI. With monthly donations starting at just $15 a month, it is an easy way to have a resounding impact on our blind and visually impaired clients and program participants. All EyeGive donors are invited to a special spring appreciation event each year.

We have volunteer opportunities in all of our programs, and we have immediate general volunteer needs in our Own Your Life classes. Specifically, we are looking for groups or individuals to share their knowledge and passions with our clients. We also need volunteers for our events. From greeting guests to helping with set-up to photography to inviting your friends to attend, we can always use extra hands.

Volunteers

Through planned giving you can ensure that ABVI will be able to serve the blind and visually impaired in the Tri-County area for years to come. Please contact ABVI to discuss setting up a bequest, or let us know if you have already included us in your estate plans.

Planned GivingDid you know that IRA holders who are at least 70 ½ years of age can make tax-free distributions from their IRAs to qualified charitable organizations such as ABVI? This provision applies for Traditional, Roth and inherited IRAs. Help secure the future of ABVI today, while simultaneously satisfying your required minimum distribution (RMD).

IRAMonthly Donations

VISIONARY is a new endeavor we are embarking on as an organization to recognize and celebrate friends of ABVI who give $5,000 or more annually to support our programs and mission. This new major gift initative is part of a larger organizational priority to draw greater numbers of our stakeholders closer to our mission and goals for the future. Your support will help more blind or vision impaired adults thrive each year.
