There are times when I am disheartened by the things I read in the news, by the events going on in both our own nation and around the world. I confess I have days when I avoid the news, simply because I need a break from the onslaught of heartbreak in the broken world around me. There are times when I am frustrated and a little hopeless for the future of The United Methodist Church, and times when I feel powerless as the special session of General Conference approaches in February of 2019. Perhaps you have felt this way as well? But I write this newsletter article from Institute, an annual camp that gathers United Methodist youth from our geographic area together for a week of worship, reflection, and growing closer to God. Institute meets at Baker University, one of our United Methodist schools, and we stay in the residence halls on campus all week. (I am thrilled to be joined by a youth from Crestview this year, Amber Schmidt!) I feel the presence of God as these young people sing songs, ask difficult questions, and learn about this crazy thing we call faith. Last week I had an amazing time at Crestview with our children (and adults!) at Vacation Bible School, where we learned about God and celebrated being children of God. As we played and learned, I saw God's reign alive and well in their eyes. Yes, sometimes the weight of all that is going on the world can threaten to overwhelm me, but both the youth at camp and the children at VBS remind me that God is doing powerful things in the world. In a turbulent time in the world and in our own denomination, I invite you to pause, and give thanks for God's work in your own life, and in the lives around you. To lift up a prayer of thanksgiving for the entirety of God's boundless creation, and remember the prayer of Julian of Norwich: "All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be made well." The Topeka Rescue Mission clients were served lunch on Tues. noon, June 26, by Debbie Ba-som, Ila Hewitt, Galen & Shirley Postier. 184 clients were served a nutritious mac 'n cheese meal. It is always amazing to those of us serving how grateful the majority of clients are for their meal. The next time we are scheduled to serve is Tuesday, July 24. Give Shirley a phone call at 246-2308 if you are willing to help with the noon meal. Thanks to those who do volun-teer and reap the reward of service to others.

Hello All, I have great news to share!! Doorstep made $25,391.67 from Topeka Gives One Day of Giving! We were 2nd highest again this year in the number of donors (122) who gave to Doorstep! We were 4th highest in the amount received from the event! The event made a total of $597,421.19 with the match money included! Amazing! I want to per-sonally thank everyone who took time to go Fairlawn Plaza two weeks ago to make a donation for Door-step! This has been a challenging year, and this finan-cial blessing was needed more now than ever! We are grateful to the Topeka Community Foundation for putting this event on each year for the benefit of the many non-profits in our community. In the past 6 years, Doorstep has made nearly $90,000 from those “one day of giving” events! The load feels a little bit lighter today… Thank you again! Lisa Cain, Executive Director Doorstep, Inc. Doorstep Newsletter Article – August 2018 We would like to thank everyone who donated items for Christmas in July! As kids are getting ready to go back to school, now is the perfect time to stock up on school supplies. Doorstep provides new school supplies to the children we adopt at Christmas to replenish them for the second half of the year. If you can help with these items while supplies are plentiful, and on sale, we would greatly appreciate your dona-tions! In the heat of summer we are seeing more requests for hygiene kits. In 2017, we gave out 852 hygiene kits! We are in need of deodorant, bar soap or body wash,

shampoo/conditioner in one, razors and shaving cream, sunscreen and chapstick. Thank you in ad-vance if you can help! Food donations go in the green tubs / toiletries, clothing, etc. go in the pink tubs! Please do not put hygiene items in the Green tubs as it taints the food!)
