With your help, The Whole Child grew tremendously this past year. We nearly doubled our staff count and increased our service locations from 6 to 11 sites across Los Angeles County. Our Parent Enrichment services tripled, extending our reach from Southeast Los Angeles County into the San Gabriel Valley region. Furthermore, we strengthened our Family Housing service capabilities by entering into the field of housing development. By investing in both interim and permanent housing solutions for homeless families, our agency will be able to offer our mental health, parenting and nutrition services to housing clients residing at our own facilities. Our multidisciplinary approach to combating family homelessness addresses various critical areas to ensure the well-being of children and their parents. This year we completed our 2019-2022 Strategic Vision and Plan developing clear goals and objectives that will guide our efforts for the next three years. This plan ensures a greater alignment both within The Whole Child and externally with the many partners and collaborators we work with. We are excited to implement all the initiatives developed in order to further our Mission to help families raise emotionally and physically healthy children and have a place to call home.
No doubt, the tremendous efforts and openness of The Whole Child team during our fiscal 2018-2019 year, enabled us to expand our reach geographically and break new ground in providing additional services to families in need in Los Angeles County. As we move forward, we will maintain this commitment to Taking it to the Next Level!
It continues to be a privilege to lead the team at The Whole Child and to work with our partners in the community that make our Mission a reality. To all our team members and Board of Directors, thank you for your relentless dedication to the families we serve, to our funders and partners, thank you for trusting us with your support! Group therapy has become an integral part of our service delivery system. It is a treatment model that promotes client connection and problem solving that individual treatment may not provide. Groups can focus on anger, depression, self-esteem concerns, shyness and numerous other topics. They can act as a sounding board and create a support network. Many children benefit from group psychotherapy as a way of practicing following rules and learning patience. Parents often find benefit in hearing that others are experiencing similar difficulties in their child raising and find help from the experience of others as well as direct guidance from the therapist.
Additional benefits of group therapy include the increased capacity of helping a higher number of clients and families to receive needed services.

United as a Family My family had to confront a difficult situation in our lives. My kids were struggling at school and at home. I didn’t know what to do. It felt as if my hands were tied. I tried talking with my kids’ teachers, requested an Individualized Education Program, went on walks with my kids, and worked on homework. Nothing seemed to be enough to help them the way they needed to be helped.
At The Whole Child we had the support of a whole team. Therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nutrition and the Full-Service Partnership teams helped me work with my children. Our situation continues to get better. Together we have achieved our goal to help my daughter manage her mood swings. And we now enjoy time as a family.
I imagine a future that is more tranquil and where we feel united as a family. Thanks to The Whole Child, I feel relieved and supported as a parent. My daughter expresses that she feels understood and my son feels happier. As a mom, that feels pretty great!
–Lourdes, Mental Health & Nutrition Education client

A Place to Call Home We were homeless, my son and me, and I was unemployed. I left two abusive homes; first to get away from a violent spouse then a threatening situation while staying with a family member. Things felt so hopeless and I was embarrassed about our situation. I tried looking for work, but I was pregnant when I left my husband which made it difficult to get hired anywhere. After my baby was born I started coming to The Whole Child. Together we worked as a team. They helped us find a homeless shelter, get a housing voucher, and find an apartment. The Whole Child helped me with the deposit, rent and other helpful services. It was tough in the beginning but The Whole Child staff was very helpful and caring. Today, I am working full-time and have been living in the apartment with my boys for two years now. I recently paid off my student loans, and I am debt free! I look forward to an exciting future watching my boys grow up in a peaceful home. The Whole Child has shown me that there is beauty in the struggle.

Antonia Finds Hope “I remember the day my son was born like it was just yesterday. The doctor came in the room. I was by myself when they looked at me and told me your son has Down Syndrome. They said there may be other complications and if he has a heart murmur we have to let you know, as of now, your son might have only a couple days to live. As a first time mom, to think about your newborn baby that you haven’t even spent five minutes with him and all of a sudden the hospital is testing him and his little body is under all these machines is really scary. At that moment when the doctors told me all of this I just wanted to hold my baby and not worry about all of the challenges that lie ahead.
The hospital referred me to The Whole Child’s Home Visiting program that supports new mothers as they are released to go home. The thing that I love about The Whole Child is the fact that they don’t only keep tabs on Isaac; they keep tabs on me. It’s really comforting to know they care. The staff truly care about supporting me as a new parent and making sure that I have the resources that I need to feel supported and be the best mom that I can be.
To say that The Whole Child has changed my life is an understatement. Thank you so much. You are definitely part of the family!”

A teaser of what’s coming next!
The Whole Child’s first residential facility for families experiencing homelessness. With welcoming grounds and a robust array of interdisciplinary supportive services, this program will reduce trauma in children and provide families with a strong start in their journey to permanent housing.
Led by The Whole Child, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, this innovative model will introduce a mix of housing solutions for families experiencing homelessness including interim, permanent supportive/ affordable and home ownership units. Our goal is to create a vision of what is possible for some of the most vulnerable neighbors.
The Whole Child will be one of four agencies in Los Angeles County to introduce the Portland Identification & Early Referral model for detection and treatment of First Episode Psychosis/schizophrenia in youth. This program will curve the debilitating effects of this condition and give teenagers a better chance to live a fulfilling life.
