YMC VISIT by Dr. Maha Kenawy

On March 28. 2019, The Student Chapter was honored to host Dr. Maha Kenawy from YMC to spend the day

with us on the campus and to give us a lecture about her latest research on Advancing Computational

Modeling of Structures for Earthquake Engineering.

Dr. Maha also shared with us her experience of working on her research and with EERI for the past couple of

years and explained to us the current opportunities that EERI is offering.

Resonance on Structural Integrity’s Seminar By Dr.Ahmed Mostafa

On March 25, 2019, Dr. Ahmed Mostafa generously accepted our invitation from Canada to give us a lecture

about his recent works.

Seminar’s Topic: The basic role of oil and gas producers is to ensure that all activities in their processing plants are

carried out in a safely manner. For that purpose, and as part of the structural integrity management program, regular

maintenance is always required to ensure that process operations are running smoothly. During the regular

maintenance inspections, there could be a need to replace and/or upgrade some mechanical components or

equipment. It is one of the crucial roles of the maintenance and operation teams in the processing facilities to make

Page 8: 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT - eeri.org › wp-content › uploads › Ain-Shams-University-2018-19.pdf2018-2019 Annual Report, June 21, 2019 University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of

sure that the newly replaced components and/or equipment are working in tandem with the existing structures. In

other words, there will be no resonance effect on the existing facility, which might cause work disruption. The scope

of work of this presentation is to identify the root cause analysis for the resonance phenomenon that occurred within

a structural steel facility in a local oil and gas plant in British Columbia, Canada after the installation of a new set of

motors and gear boxes for the air coolers structures during the regular maintenance of such equipment. Modal

dynamic analyses were implemented to predict the natural frequencies, mass participation factors and mode shapes

of the overall structural system to verify the resonance occurrence and structural solutions were provided and

inspected.

Attendees: 50+ Attendees from the University.

Youth League Forum – University of Ain Shams Student Chapter-

YLF is an organization that hosts an annual national competition among the Student Chapters in the Egyptian

Universities, each activity show case its event, goals and what they have achieved so far. And they compete

for fund packages offered by YLF.

More than 250 Student Chapter applied and only 50 were accepted and University of Ain Shams Student

Chapter phased the three selection Phases. The competition’ day was covered by most of the local news and

government representative, we got the 3rd rank in the technical category but we weren’t included in the

offered fund packages.

The competition was hold in parallel to the SDC’19 Competition in Vancouver, March 8, 2019.

University of Ain Shams Student Chapter’s Passing Experience

This year we wanted to pass our gained experience from EERI for the last two years to those who couldn’t be

part of the student chapter for this year and to the young children in schools, also we wanted to help them in

understanding the fundamental concepts of earthquakes, presented in a very simple and interactive’s way

1- University of Ain Shams Student Chapter’s Interns Team:

We recruited a team of interns from freshmen to sophomore to shadow the team member while they

are working on their Design and Construction’s tasks. Helping them to interact and ask questions about

the structure and architecture’s concepts that we’ve been developing through the year.

During the Structural session given to the intern’s team by the Structural head

2- Nutty Scientists Collaboration:

We collaborated with Nutty Scientists to help school kids (age from 7 to 13 years old ) in understanding

the basic fundamentals of earthquake by giving them a lecture and helping them to understand the

construction’ process and sequence of building the Model for the SDC.

SEISMIC DESIGN COMPETITION TEAM

We recruited the SDC team on August 29, 2019 and then we started working on the old rules and built 2

structure model prior to the competition.

After changing the rules for SDC’19 we had to change our structure and architecture approach for this year’s

model, however. We’ve submitted our proposal and it was accepted and then we went for a shaking table

test in Cairo University (we don’t have one yet in our university).

This year we have developed a more user-friendly construction’s techniques that helped us in constructing the

model itself in Vancouver instead of shipping it.

SDC’19 Results came much better than the previous year, Ranking the 5th in the Architecture and 6th in

Communication was better record for us and although we believe we could have achieved better than that

knowing that we got the second highest FABI; although our model didn’t survive GM2.

Team results and lessons learned

SDC’19 Results:

5th in Architecture.

6th in Communication.

7th in FASC.

Construction: we constructed the 2 full models before the competition and built another one in Vancouver.

And we had one shaking table test on one of these models before traveling to the Competition.

Page 17: 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT - eeri.org › wp-content › uploads › Ain-Shams-University-2018-19.pdf2018-2019 Annual Report, June 21, 2019 University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of

2018-2019 Annual Report, June 21, 2019

University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute page 17

Competition: we had invested a lot effort in this year’s competition and the results’ improvement from last year

reflect that. However, we believe we could have achieved more if we did take care of some small details.

our Model had zero violations unlike the last’s year we had many violations that took us out of the

competition’s overall ranking.

Page 18: 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT - eeri.org › wp-content › uploads › Ain-Shams-University-2018-19.pdf2018-2019 Annual Report, June 21, 2019 University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of

University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute page 18

We survived GM1 but the model collapsed during GM2. ( the collapse was due to the rod housing’s design that

couldn’t hold GM2 ) And that was the same performance’s results we had in our first shaking table test back

home, and we did make some improvements to the structural design by strengthening the rod housing but we

didn’t get the chance to test it again on a shaking table before we travel ( it takes a lot of paper work to

undergo a shaking table test in another university as our university doesn’t have one).

Page 19: 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT - eeri.org › wp-content › uploads › Ain-Shams-University-2018-19.pdf2018-2019 Annual Report, June 21, 2019 University of Ain Shams Student Chapter of

Lessons Learned:

1- Change the presidential election cycle so that it

starts/ends just after the competition, so we get more

time to work on the competition.

2- Combine the Structural and the Construction team to

be working in one team through the year.

3- work with Cairo University to get an approval to allow us

to have 2/3 shaking table tests instead of just one.

4- innovate a new approach for the rod housing’s design.
