OUT OF MY MIND Tim Hughes, Senior Minister

I found this definition of the verb “to kiss.” To touch or press with the lips, while compressing and then separating them in token of greeting or affection.” “To smack with the pursed lips, a compression of the closed cavity of the mouth by the cheeks giving a slight sound when the rounded contact of the lips with one another is broken.”

That might be a perfect description of a kiss by some standard. Someone worked real hard to come up with that definition and description. However, if you didn’t know what a kiss is, you might have a hard time duplicating it by imitating that definition. In addition, if you’ve ever kissed someone you love, you know that definition doesn’t do justice to the act of kissing.

What is the definition of thanksgiving? What is the holiday of Thanksgiving really all about? I found this definition of “thanksgiving.” “An expression of

thanks to God.”

The dictionary definition doesn’t do justice to the sincere thankfulness that a Christian feels toward God. We are aware of his bestowed blessings. We are conscious of His providential love and care.

A grandmother in Connecticut prayed these words with a bit of humor and also truth: “Please, dear Lord, do NOT bless us as we deserve, we couldn’t get along with so little.” We’ve had so many good blessings for so long we begin to feel as though we deserve these good things, that they are rightfully ours.

What are you thankful for in this Thanksgiving Season? Helen Keller wrote in the story of her life that “we can be thankful for a knowledge of God’s works, the lamp of faith in our darkness, and another life to look forward to—a life with light and flowers and heavenly song.”

New Check-In System Coming in 2019 Parents, we are pursuing new check-in software, Planning Center, which will eventually replace Lambslist in 2019. Lambslist is what we currently use to check our children in to the appropriate classes each Sunday morning and print the security labels.

Teachers are needed for: 4s & 5s Sunday School Class for 9 am on the March/June/September/December rotation. 2s Sunday School Class for 10:30 am on the March/June/September/December rotation. SuperStart! This event is for Preteen students (grades 4-6) will be on March 8-9. The theme for this next SuperStart is “Conquering Gargantor,” Overcoming Obstacles to Sharing Your Story. The main scripture is Psalm 105:1, “Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.” This year’s SuperStart tour is about conquering Gargantor - the biggest obstacles that keep us from sharing the stories of God’s work in our lives. By helping preteens conquer those obstacles, Superstart will help them become a force unhindered in sharing the amazing things God does. Through fun interactive teaching, preteens will not only discover their own God stories, but also an understanding of how to let the whole world know what He has done. As followers of Christ, it's important to recognize the amazing ways He works in our lives. And equally as important is sharing the stories of what He has done with others. Preteens face many obstacles when it comes to telling others what God has done for them. Some preteens are fearful to share, while others may feel their story isn't good enough. In fact, most of them feel as if they don't even have a story to share. As a result, Psalm's commission to "Let the whole world know what He has done" can feel like standing in front of a gigantic obstacle course of impossibility. But imagine what preteens could do if that feeling of impossibility were removed. Cost will be $65 and the deadline will be February 8. Please email [email protected] to register. You will get an email back with information to complete your registration.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES 2019 1st Quarter, January — March

Doctrine and Theology

Classes Begin at 9:00 am

COLLEGE & CAREER FAITH BUILDERS SEEKING ALLAH, FINDING JESUS Join us as we watch and discuss a video series in which Nabeel Qureshi shares the powerful story of his journey from faith in Allah to faith in Jesus Christ. Along the way, he gives valuable insight into Islam, sharing cultural, intellectual and theological barriers that often stand in the way of Muslims accepting Jesus. Nabeel’s testimony will deepen your understanding of American Muslims and draw you closer to Jesus as you consider the amazing ways He works today.

DEAD THEOLOGIAN SOCIETY EMBODIED HOPE: A THEOLOGICAL MEDITATION ON PAIN AND SUFFERING Too often the Christian attitude toward suffering is characterized by a detached academic appeal to God’s sovereignty, as if suffering were a game or a math problem. Or maybe we expect that since God is good, everything will just work out all right somehow. But where then is honest lament? Aren’t we shortchanging believers of the riches of the Christian teaching about suffering? In Embodied Hope we will consider the example of our Lord Jesus. Only because Jesus has taken on our embodied existence, suffered alongside us, died, and been raised again can we find any hope from the depths of our own dark valleys of pain. As we look to Jesus, we are invited to participate not only in his sufferings, but also in the church, which calls us out of isolation and into the encouragement and consolation of the communal life of Christ.

Classes Begin at 10:30 am

HALAS GALATIANS The New Testament letter of Galatians has been called the “Magna Charta” of Christian liberty. What was the function of the O.T. Mosaic Law and its relationship to God’s grace manifested in Christ and the Gospel by which we are saved. Is man saved by faith and works or faith alone? These questions are answered in Paul’s letter to the churches in the Galatia region which he had established on his first missionary journey through the area.

SONRISE MATTHEW In the book of Matthew, Jesus taught the people through sermons, illustrations, and parables how to prepare for life in his eternal kingdom by living properly in this world. Those teachings guide us yet today. Join us for a study of Matthew and a look at prophecy fulfilled, faith strengthened, and life made fruitful.

Over My Head and Under My Heart: The Christmas Sacrifice

It is Easter when we tend to think of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for the sake of the world, how he died on the cross so we could have an opportunity to be forgiven of our sins. While Easter is central to our relationship with Christ, we cannot forget the sacrifice that started the journey… the sacrifice that led God to become one of us:

“…Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:5-8, ESV

Think about that… Jesus emptied himself and became one of his creations so he could die on our behalf. All this so we could go back to the way it was meant to be, in a full and loving relationship with God. Don’t look past this moment, this was (still is) a big deal. This is more than just a cute story of a baby being born, this is a heroic tale of a God who would stop at nothing to win us back. A story of a God who lived in the midst of our chaos and sin for 30 plus years. A story of a God who was broken and beaten so we wouldn’t have to be. This is a story of a God who loves you and wants nothing more than to be with you. Don’t let that story pass without acknowledging the sacrifice God made for the entire world.

One more thing… Paul didn’t write Philippians 2:5-8 just so we could acknowledge Christ’s greatness, he wrote it because he wanted us to do something because of that greatness:

“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:1-4

Christ’s sacrifice at Christmas should mean we are willing to do the same every other day of the year. Let’s make this season a season of sacrifice… a season to sacrifice our wants and desires for those around us. A season to sacrifice all that we have so that someone else can have more. If we truly are impacted by the sacrifice of Christ, then we must follow Paul’s words and put others before ourselves. Merry Christmas and may Christ’s sacrifice define and motivate you.

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN When we think of Cornerstone and the Toy Drive, 1 Timothy 6:17-18 comes to mind.

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold that which is truly life.

Because the people of Cornerstone carry out this command, year after year-- being generous and ready to share, we are always excited to begin the Toy Drive each year. This year is no different, we are looking forward in faith to see how God helps us provide Christmas for our food pantry children. Mark your calendar for December 8, and be prayerful about how you might volunteer your time, efforts, or toys this year.

Looking back, we see our year last year's Toy Drive as the most successful yet. We provided all new toys last year, and will do so again this year. We’ve also decided to keep our Angel Tree, and again stuff stockings for the kids. We will gather some information about each child during sign ups and you can use that information to help guide your purchases. This is also a great opportunity to be specifically praying for the child and/or family for which you are purchasing stockings. Starting on Sunday, November 4 there will be a Christmas tree in the lobby that will have a child’s age, gender, and something specific they like (character, hobby, sport, etc). Please use the general guideline of 10-15 dollars per stocking. You can put the items in an actual stocking, shoebox, gift bag, etc.

Should you need help with gift ideas, keep an eye out for our “Toy Drive Gift Ideas” list on the table in the lobby. (Feel free to use it for loved ones as well!)

For any questions or for large donations, please call Amanda Angrick (765.661.2541) or Janelle Drisko (317.371.6684).

Sign up in the Sunday Programs.
